The two figures collapsed to the ground in the church, in each other’s arms. With that, a man in a dark suit materialized, as well as another figure in robes that seemed to be both black and white at the same time, in essence giving the robes a gray color.
The man in the suit looked up, with a small smile on his lips. “Well, I wonder if this time is the true, final time?”
The one in the robes, who now had the two figures standing next to it, merely raised a hand, and light brighter than any earthly light shown down upon them all.
The other three vanished into the light, but the man lingered a moment more. “Imagine that. One part Angel, the other at least half demonic, and both are quite possibly being accepted to the High One’s place. I guess they truly did repent.”
With that, he too vanished into the light, only to appear on a white plane of existence with the others, and two doors about 10 feet in front of them.
“I… I can read them!” one of the figures, a male, said, referring to print that was above each door.
“Yes! This time they’re not in some foreign language, but as plain as day,” the other one said, a female.
“Well then, I guess it is the final time for both of you,” the man in the suit said. “You must now walk towards the doors, and that will determine your ultimate fate.
The female nodded, and took a hesitant step forward, before gaining a stride. Both doors opened a crack, fire visible behind one, and a holy light behind the other. She kept going, and the doors opened a little more, but finally the one with the holy light kept opening as she neared the doors, the one with the fire no longer moving. Finally, she stepped through the doorway of light, and vanished into it, the door closing behind her immediately.
“You now must face your own final place,” the man in the suit told the other male. “Are you sure you can handle this?”
“I personally would love to be with Emia for the rest of eternity,” he said. “But I’ve seen enough to know that I cannot determine my final fate.” With that, he stepped forward.
Once more, both doors opened a bit. As he walked closer, they both still kept opening, more than halfway. Finally, though, the one with the holy light stopped, and the one with fire kept going.
The male sighed. “I suppose I should’ve expected this. After all, being quite demonic kinda qualifies me for this.” He kept walking.
But to everyone’s surprise, the one with fire suddenly stopped as he neared, and the one with the holy light suddenly started opening again. As he was barely three feet from the doors, the one with the holy light opened fully, and he stepped through, joining Emia, the two embracing each other, and the door shutting, before it all vanished, and the one in the robes and the man in the suit were left on the plane.
“I guess it’s time for my next assignment,” the one in the suit said, and he headed towards another doorway that had appeared…
Now, as to what’s going on here. Well, allow me to give you a little background. My own story begins long ago, but seeing as how it’s not my story that’s important, but the story of the other two, I’ll give a few brief details.
First off, my own story begins in the year 2002. That’s the year I was born, in what was called New York City. Lived your full, regular life there, until 2048. By then, I had a wife, and elder son, and a young daughter. That year, a terrible tragedy took them from me, as well as many others across America and other countries. I ended up going semi-mad from this loss, and in the end, when it was my time to join my family Up There, I was denied entry up there by The Man Upstairs, which wasn’t all too surprising, considering… but that’s another tale.
Anyways, because as we’re all taught, the Man is quite forgiving: basically, I was to help the Angel of Death guide souls to the final resting spot, more or less be with those who were dying as they lived out their final days. He also said that after I had delivered so many people like such, I would finally be allowed to be reunited with my family. Naturally, I readily accepted this, and it wasn’t until I actually began did I realize how much responsibility this job carried.
But the world turned on. Or at least for a few more centuries. In the year 2563, the devastating power of nuclear energy and weapons was unleashed upon the world due to something between countries that had that kind of power. Most of the world was destroyed. From then on, when the world started rebuilding itself, instead of dates being A.D., it was called S.T., standing for Shattered Time. Not only that, but the world became one of steampunk.
Of course, even with this, my assignment stayed the same. And because of this, 5 centuries passed like that of a month. I just kept doing my job, knowing that sooner or later, I’d finally be admitted to join my family. I just accepted it all, and it soon became nothing more than routine, me showing up to those who were in their final days, giving them comfort and whatnot, and the Angel of Death then taking them Up There. Things were pretty quiet…
…Until the year ST 522, anyways. The year 3065 AD. That is when I encountered those two, and when the story really starts…
Zwinnn.
The body fell to the ground, a large hole where its chest was previously.
“I think you might’ve overdone it just a little, Emia.”
