Creature
The orange monster crouched low to the ground and eyed his prey. His breath was erratic with anticipation and he tried to calm down.
In. Out. In Out.
Green, narrow eyes followed the beating of his prey’s wings. Beautiful… simply beautiful…
He wanted the little creature in his grasp, wanted to capture it with his claws, wanted to pin it down and examine it; and wanted to strip it of its wonderfulness.
So fascinating… so terribly fascinating…
He wanted it now. Now. NOW.
It flapped its wings so prettily, so leisurely, he wanted to touch it.
His orange body pressed against the ground as he hid in the underbrush of the jungle.
Thick vines and wild grass provided partial shade against the prey.
Such an innocent and naïve creature it was… He just wanted to gobble it up.
Slowly, warily, he crept forward again, head low, tail flicking back and forth in obvious excitement.
Yes, yes, this was the moment… He would be able to arrest this curiously beautiful creature so delightfully oblivious to his advances.
Flap. Flap. Flap. Flap flap. Fla--
It paused. Did it hear him? He held unmoving and silent, stilling his breath.
It had turned its head away. Yes! Here was the moment…
Carefully, he slithered forward again, silent. Ever so silent.
Close. He was close. He was unbearably close. Oh, he wished he could just snatch it right now!
Three feet… two feet… one foot… It still hadn’t noticed him!
He slowly raised his head, opening his mouth to bear his fangs. A silent roar of excitement rushed through his body.
Flap-flap. Flap. Flap. Flap.
Was it still waiting for him? Was it wary?
He pulled back his lips and poised for a sure-aim pounce.
Hind legs bent back like a spring, all claws at the ready. There would be no escape! No salvation!
It was still oblivious… Now was the moment! Okay, go for it!
Five… four… three… two… one… POUNCE!
“Alfie!”
The orange monster jerked in surprise, mid-leap. With a shriek, he fumbled, claws scratching at the air as the beautiful prey fluttered away from him in fright. No!
“Alfie!! Come on, kitty, time to eat!”
He hissed at his master’s call. Curses! His prey just escaped him! Now he would not be able to fully examine its beauty, its glamour.
He pressed himself to the floor of the jungle, trying to hide himself again.
“Alfie… where are youuu?”
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
His master was braving the jungle, looking for him. He would not be found, though. No!
“Alfie, get out of there!”
She found him!
The orange monster hissed and skittered backwards, out of the reach of twin human hands that made a grab at him.
“Mom’s going to kill you if you ruin her roses again… C’mon, boy, let’s get you out of there.”
The twin hands shot out and snatched him from the jungle, dangling him high in the air. He scowled and flicked his tail angrily.
His master had ruined his game…
“Hah. Now look at you. Dirty. Why were you playing in the garden, you silly cat? C’mon, lunch is ready. Or would you rather not have your favorite Fancy Feast dish today? It’s tuna!”
The orange monster quickly staunched his heat of irritation. Tuna, she said? Oh, well then…
He mewled eagerly and happily.
“Hehe. Yeah, that’s what I thought, you greedy kitty. Well, let’s go then.”
He curled happily in his master’s arms as she carried him into the house. He wasn’t so mad at her anymore…
Flap flap. Flap flap. Flap. Flap.
“Oh! A butterfly!”
His prey had just flown into the house. A grin crosses his lips.
This wasn’t over just yet! The orange monster would continue his hunt indoors…
--But first, some lunch. A cat had to eat real food too, of course! Playing Godzilla with a butterfly could come afterwards…
Anyway, I hope it's not too innuendo-y, like my friend told me when he read it. (It wasn't on purpose, I swear! It was supposed to have a different meaning! Gutter-brain...)
