Chapter 1:
Everything was gone. The world, its cars, its light, its wind, its moon…the buildings, they were all gone to me. The only thing that was here, it was the breath in my lungs and my mind, following the edge of cool concrete underneath my feet.
It was only me. My eyes were closed as the wind rustled through my blond locks. It was only me. The night called for me. The streets below called to me. They told me to leap and my mind told me to follow whatever the streets beckoned me to do. My heart though, it told me there was still more of life to live. It told me not to jump.
A strong warm hand gripped my wrist, my mind. “Come on…let’s go inside.” A soft voice said. There was no weakness in it. I slowly opened my blue eyes, meeting hazel ones that held fear in them. They told me not to jump, to just follow them and everything would be okay. Maybe everything would be okay.
The pale hand pulled me from the roof’s edge. I followed, willingly, giving the road a last glance. It was a long ways away. Something told me that I’d see the road again. A creaking door pulled my mind and eyes from the street. A new pair of fingers enveloped my waist and pulled me past the door so it would shut.
My eyes were on that door as I was drowned by lips, a kiss. I was sinking though breaths rose from us both. He finally lifted his lips from mine and looked relieved. “Why?” He asked as his eyes tried to pull me to safety, but they failed.
I couldn’t meet those eyes. I couldn’t speak. I was lost.
“You have to tell me why Kay. I won’t always be here.” He said. All that mattered to me was that he cared. I didn’t know how to put that into words though.
“It won’t matter if you can’t always be here Nathan. Go. Thank you. Goodnight.” I tried to push past him though I knew it was useless. Nathaniel Walker was a baseball player at our high school, a walking legend, he could hold his own. No one knew anything past that walking legend. No one knew much except what he wanted them to see.
Anger flooded those hazel eyes. What was once warm now turned stone cold. “You’re doing it again.” Nathan whispered as he held a glare. I tried to push past him again, knowing what was going to happen next. My mind, my body didn’t want it to happen again. “I’m talking to you!” He gripped my arm and those eyes were on fire now, threatening to burn me.
“You should’ve let me stay out there…” I whimpered, cringing, drawing into the dark corner of what little soul I had left. “You should’ve-”
What I had to say next didn’t matter because my face burned from the sting of hand. I was lucky not to get the one with his big golden class ring. “I save your life and this is what I get Kay?” I expected it, but my body wasn’t prepared enough. My blue eyes stared at the cracked floor, already knowing it like a map. “Look at me when I’m talking to you!” He yelled, gripping my curly hair. A shriek escaped my throat.
“Nathan! Please! Don’t! I’m sorry!” I yelled, beating my frail hands to his chest.
A flashlight climbed the stairs and Nathan let go of my hair immediately. “Hey! Who’s up here?” A burly voice called out.
“Sorry sir. My girlfriend…she was about to jump…she’s just a little shocked right now.” Nathan said without stuttering, his alibi.
The cop reached the top of the stairs to where Nathan and I both could see his dark suit. “You were about to jump?” He asked me.
Nathan didn’t even look at me. I knew what my response was supposed to be. If I didn’t give the right one, he’d hurt me later on. It wasn’t worth it. “Yeah…”
The cop reached the both of us and clapped Nathan on the shoulder. “You saved her? Nice work.” He looked over me. “Do you need to come to the station, we need to call parents or anything?”
“We live in this building. I’ll get her back to her apartment. She’ll be alright, I promise.” The smile…the charming one, he gave it to the cop. The deceitful smile that trapped you unless you could read between the lines, which no one could, not even me in the beginning. Again, Nathan was a hero and I was the crazy one.
