Chapter Three
But If Ever I Were to See You Again, I Don’t Think I’d Know What the Hell I Should Do
Vincent scowled at the scene before him. Seriously. He was 19 centuries old. Plenty old enough to pack for himself, right? So why the hell were all of these maids scurrying around his room carrying piles of clothes, shoes, socks, underwear…Really, it wasn’t like he was going to be gone that long. He had made that perfectly clear with Lyndon and Kiri when he had agreed to go with them back to their mansion where they lived with Kiri’s younger brother.
Vincent gave an annoyed sigh as turned around and left his room. It was obvious that he wasn’t going to be getting any privacy there. As he walked towards the garden, which was generally empty, he reflected over the events of the past month. It had been decided that they would leave on the last night of the waning moon, and that was tonight. As soon as last minute preparations were done and over with, they would be leaving.
Vincent couldn’t help but wonder if Lyndon and Kiri didn’t think he didn't have a brain. Like they couldn’t be more obvious about their intentions? The People of the Moon traditionally mated on the full moon! Did they seriously think that he was going to believe that they wanted to stay for a month but Kiri really couldn’t bear to be away from her brother as they had told him? They were trying to hook him up with Kiri’s brother! And it annoyed him to no end because they knew how he felt! They knew he didn’t want to take anybody but Enki as his mate! He didn’t even know the guy!
As he stared out at the garden from the gazebo he was now sitting in, he pondered over what he knew of his brother’s mate’s brother. Which, he came to realize, wasn’t much. As a matter of fact, setting aside the common sense stuff, like that he was a kitsune, and therefore had pointy silver fox ears popping out of his head, a silver fox tail popping out of where tails generally pop out of, he really didn’t know anything about the guy beyond the fact that he had gone a little loopy because his lover had left him and never come back.
‘Left him and never come back, huh? Damn, that sounds familiar…’ Vincent experience a brief moment of self loathing before Lyndon appeared before him, seemingly out of nowhere.
“Hey. We’re ready to go.” Vincent sighed as he stood up, stretching.
“Right.” With that, they headed towards the waiting carriage. The carriage was large and painted black, with red velvet lining the inside and covering the cushioned seats. At the front were two beautiful black unicorns standing at attention, their tails swishing and cloven hooves stamping impatiently as they waited for the two vampires and the kitsune to load into the carriage so they could finally be on their way.
The trip was quiet for the most part. Vincent stared out of the window, bored, watching the outside world flash by them. It was he who was the first to notice the shadows in the trees. The shadows that seemed almost to be following them.
“Oh great moon above, no!” Kiri cried out as she noticed the shadows as well. “Hunters!” With that, she gave to order to the driver for them to move at full speed, and they almost seemed to fly through the air. Out of the corners of their eyes, the three demons saw the flashes of the silver powered lasers as they just missed the wheels of their carriage, harmlessly hitting the ground.
Of course, all three of them knew how harmful those things really were. All demons were taught from a young age to keep away from hunters and their guns that would cause them pain so great they would lose consciousness, but not nearly great enough to kill them. Somehow the humans had discovered that demons were weak to silver, and had wasted no time in researching how they could use it to their advantage. The had ended up developing a weapon similar in nature to a taser, having somehow discovered a way to create a sort of silver electricity.
But they hadn’t developed these weapons for the sake of protecting people from the demons. Oh, no. They had developed them so that hunters, such as the ones that they had just encountered, could hunt down demons, catch them, and then take them to labs so that scientists could do terrible experiments to them, such that survivors who managed to escape were scared for life, not just physically, but psychologically as well.
“Bastards!” Kiri murmured as she buried her face into Lyndon’s chest, shivering from the shock of what had just happened. Lyndon held her close, stroking her hair and back, saying nothing.
Vincent went back to staring out the window, perking up slightly when he noticed a large mansion seemingly rise out of the ground before them. Kitsune shielding magic. A shimmer to the area that made the mansion appear to not be there.
“Home sweet home!” Lyndon chirped as he hopped out of the carriage, it having come to a halt before the entrance of the mansion.
“Yeah, really. Come on, let’s get inside.” Kiri stretched as she walked to the door. Opening it, she walked in side. “Little Bro! I’m home!” She cried out to her little brother. When there was no response- no answering call or the sound of padding feet down the stairs to the entrance hall of the mansion, she frowned. “Little Brother?” Still no response. “That’s not good. I’m going to go look for him.” With that, she ran off, running through the halls, searching for her little brother.
“Well, come on. Let’s go to the drawing room and wait for them.” Lyndon said, a frown on his face. He then turned to one of the maids. “Please have our luggage brought up to our rooms, and have some tea and sandwiches made for us as well.” The maid curtsied and ran off to do as the master of the house had ordered her to do.
-
“Enki? Where are you? Are you alright? Answer me!” Kiri ran through the halls, looking for her brother. She was worried. He had obviously had one of his episodes while she was gone. There was no telling what had happened to him during that time. What if he had accidentally fallen off the balcony in his confusion? What if he had left the mansion without one of the servants noticing, and had been captured by hunters?
No! That couldn’t happen. Not after she had worked so hard to convince Vincent to come here. If he had been caught, then it was all over. He wouldn’t have tried to run. He wouldn’t have tried to fight them. He would have just let it happen. He wouldn’t care.
“Enki! You’d better answer me! I mean it!” Still nothing. There was only one place left to look. Quickly, she ran to the garden.
The garden had been her mother’s back when she lived on the Light Side of the Moon. It was full of roses of every type from all over the world. Her mother had loved them and after she and her father had left, Kiri had taken over caring for them. Frantically, she searched through, until something caught her eye. She gasped as her eyes landed on the huddled heap on the ground.
“Great moon above! Enki! Enki, are you alright? Speak to me! Enki!” Kiri scooped her brother up and started to gently shake him. “Come on, Enki, wake up! Enki!”
“Kiri?” Slowly, the younger kitsune opened his eyes.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” Kiri pushed some hair out of her brother's face, relief flooding through her.
“I’m sorry, I fell asleep again. Is Vincent back?” Kiri tried her best not to cry. It was always like this. He would have one of his episodes, lose consciousness, and when he finally woke up, he was disoriented and asking for Vincent.
“Actually, there is someone here to see you. Let’s not keep them waiting, okay?” Enki nodded.
“Okay.” Enki’s voice was quiet. He’d come back to his senses, and doubtlessly resigned himself once again to the fact that Vincent wasn’t coming back. It broke Kiri’s heart seeing her brother like this. That was why, when she had gone to meet Lyndon’s family after they had mated and settled in, she had nearly had a heart attack. What were the chances that her mate’s younger half brother would be none other than Vincent himself?
Of course, regretfully, it had taken her a full two centuries to get things to work out, between her parents spontaneously deciding to move to the Dark Side of the Moon, Lyndon having to deal with now being head of the mansion, making arrangements for Vincent to come over, and then there was Enki’s health to take care of. When she had realized she and Lyndon would have to convince Vincent to come with them on top of everything else, she had nearly killed somebody. And then there was that little problem called Vincent was so hung up over Enki that he didn’t even recognize her.
‘But that will all be solved soon,’ Kiri thought as she led her brother towards the drawing room where she knew her mate and his brother would be waiting. ‘Very soon.’

Vincent looked around the room, taking in his surroundings. The room was finely furnished, with various paintings from famous artists adorning the walls. In the center of the room was an oak coffee table, with a couch on one side of it facing a stone fireplace that was on the other side of the coffee table. On either side of the fireplace were large cushiony armchairs. Both he and his brother were sitting on the couch—which could seat four people—waiting for Kiri and her brother.
Two maids entered the room, each carrying a tray. The first one was carrying a large pot of tea and four tea cups, and the smell of jasmine tea wafted through the air from the teapot. The second maid was carrying a large plate piled high with an assortment of sandwiches. Lyndon thanked the maids and they curtsied before leaving.
As Vincent nibbled at the sandwich he had taken, he couldn’t help but be reminded of Enki’s home. His parents had had a deep love for art and had always had various paintings and sculptures all over the large mansion they had lived in. Squeezing his eyes shut, he attempted to force himself to stop thinking about Enki, but it was in vain.
His thoughts were mercifully interrupted by the door opening and Kiri coming in. He squinted to see what the large white thing was that she was dragging with her and then started when he realized that she wasn’t dragging it. It wasn’t even an “it” at all. It was a person—Kiri’s younger brother, he guessed—and she was helping him walk.
The Kitsune stood at 6’6’’, just a little shorter than his sister. His silver tail hung limply from where it connected to his body and his ears were flattened against his head. His hair was chin length and black with a silver tint to it, and his large green eyes were dull. His large green eyes that were staring at him.
“Vinny?” His voice was small and weak, and it took Vincent a while for what he had said to sink in. And when it did…
“Great moon above, Enki?” Enki pushed himself away from his sister and stumbled a few steps towards Vincent before fainting. Vincent rushed forward and managed to catch Enki, holding him close.
“You remember where his room is, right?” Kiri’s voice broke through his thoughts, gentler and kinder than it usually was.
“Yes, but first, answer my question. Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you bring us together sooner? You and Lyndon have been mated for two centuries! So why? Why did you keep us apart?” Vincent’s body was shaking. Tears rolled down his cheeks. He had waited for this day for so long! Waited for the day he would see his Enki again. And now that it had finally come, all he could think about was the fact that it could have come so much sooner.
“Vincent, I’m sorry. When you left, all of those centuries ago, Enki’s mind…well…it kind of shattered. He would stare out the window for hours—waiting for you, I guess—and nothing anybody would do or say would work to get him to go out every once and a while and maybe make some other friends besides you. He was that hung up on you. He’s kept himself locked up in his room these past seven centuries, never coming out except to wander aimlessly around the mansion or the gardens, almost as if he were in a trance. He really loves you, you know?” Vincent sighed and looked down at the unconscious kitsune in his arms.
“Yeah, I know.” With that, he picked the boy up and carried him through the mansion to his bedroom. Placing the boy on the bed, he closed the black curtains that covered the windows so as to block out the light of the sun that would be rising within the hour, and crawled into bed to sleep the day away next to his love.
