Chocolate Story Explanation

Hey! It’s vimaro22 again, and it’s time for another story explanation. I’m excited to have this story completed, though I’ll admit that it needs A LOT of work, and it will be edited later. Right now, though…it’s time for the explanation. As before with “Sweethearts,” if you’d prefer to keep this story a mystery, then feel no remorse in not reading this. However, I’d still like you to read the A Final Note and The Dedications.

The Plot

Steven and Aiden, the central idea

The whole idea of “Chocolate” was to have it pick up where “Sweethearts” left off. However, instead of picking up with Emma and Paul, it picked up with Steven, Emma’s best friend. Steven is gay, so he therefore has some inner turmoil. He was perfectly content with the idea of staying in the closet and not coming out. However, Aiden, the new student who is gay, takes an interest in him. He can’t stay in the closet now, because Aiden won’t allow it. So, he’s forced with the decision to either not come out and not have a relationship with Aiden and coming out and having a relationship with Aiden. From the end of the story, you can see that he did, indeed, come out and he is now boyfriend-boyfriend with Aiden.

Alex’s documentary

This was a fun idea that I decided to roll with when I came up with it. Alex is in his Video Media class when they get assigned their final project, a documentary on something “real.” Alex chooses to do it on the acceptance of homosexuality. He does interviews and he attempts to dig deep into people to ask them this question: what is so horribly wrong with it that you’d chastise others for it, when it’s something they can’t control? That’s the idea that I was shooting for… The end result, as you have seen is the fact that some people were touched by it and others appalled. He couldn’t reach everybody, but the fact of the matter is that he got to some people. That’s the important thing. The video was also meant to have a part on the fight for gay rights, but that became too difficult for me to incorporate in, so I just took it out altogether.

The Characters

Steven Crown

Steven is the main character of this story. If you read “Sweethearts,” you already know his back story and his history. There isn’t much to comment on with him, as he’s already been covered. I think you know him well enough to get the gist of him, and I don’t think it’s necessary to elaborate on him any further. You got enough of that with the story. I will say this, though. In case you hadn’t noticed it, Steven changed a lot in “Chocolate.” He’s not the same person he was during “Sweethearts.”

Alex Martin

Alex is Steven’s best guy friend. He’s brought up in “Sweethearts,” but you don’t see much of him in it. He’s only around for one chapter (if my memory serves me correctly) and is only mentioned slightly in others. Alex is easily one of my favorite characters in this story, just because he’s so consistent. You may not think so, since he goes from being Steven’s confidante to the one who is telling him he needs to grow up. Like it or not, he IS still the same person. But instead of the fun-loving best friend you normally see, you see his more serious side. Alex is such an amazing character, and I’m really looking forward to writing more about him in his own story, “Special,” which is coming up.

Aiden Holmes

The cute new student that Steven develops a crush on, he’s a great guy. Bottom line, I love him to death. He’s so great, and I wish that I had a friend like him in real life. He’s a little rough around the edges, but when you dig a little deeper, he’s got a heart of gold. He’s a tough nut to crack, and it’s very likely that he’ll crack you before you crack him. He’s comfortable with himself, and he’s accepting of himself. He basically thinks, “Okay, this is the way I am. I might as well deal with it.” That is such a great quality, and I wish that more people had it, including myself.

Brandon Callahan

This is the character, besides Melina, that I seriously just want to punch. Thankfully, Aiden and Steven take care of that! He’s a jerk, end of story. There isn’t much else to say about him apart from the fact that he is, in fact, disowned by his group of friends along with Melina, which you saw at the end of the story.

Melina Anderson

Like Brandon, you want to punch her. Or maybe slap her… Either way, you finally meet her in this story, whereas she was only mentioned in “Sweethearts.” There isn’t much to say about her, either.

Virginia “Ginny” Samuels

Ginny is pretty cool. She doesn’t take any crap from anyone, and she is very much able to take care of herself. She didn’t have a huge role in this story because it wasn’t called for it. She was a great friend to Steven, Aiden, and Alex, and I’d like to just leave it at that.

Any others

If there were any other characters that you were interested in knowing about, i.e. Ellie/Jenna/Scott/Brenda/Tristan/Lily, then feel free to ask me. However, I don’t think that there were any other characters worth mentioning here.

The Chapter Titles

Like with “Sweethearts,” “Chocolate” had chapter titles named after songs. Also like with “Sweethearts,” I’m listing them here so that you can check them out if you’re interested in them. All of them were taken off my iTunes, as before. Before you go ahead and read about the songs, I’d like to tell you why “Chocolate” was named the way it was. You might have assumed it to be a reference to Aiden’s hair color, which I had said in the beginning to be chocolate-colored. That isn’t the case. The title came from a song by Snow Patrol, which is, as you probably guessed, called “Chocolate.” It’s truly an amazing song, and I love it to death. I really recommend it. You can find it in various places, I assume, but the easiest way might be for you to check out the movie “The Last Kiss,” starring Zach Braff (it’s in the movie and is also on the movie’s soundtrack). (Note: I do not own any of these songs. All rights are reserved to their respective owners.) (Another Note: When I began this story, I was going through a McFLY phase. That’s why the beginning chapters have songs by them not to mention Busted, a band that was a friend to McFLY. I got out of it, but I still listen to them a lot.)

Chapter One: Too Close for Comfort, by McFLY

Chapter Two: Obviously, by McFLY

Chapter Three: Build Me Up Buttercup, cover by McFLY and Busted

Chapter Four: Don’t Panic, by Coldplay

Chapter Five: Hanging By a Moment, by Lifehouse

Chapter Six: All Around Me, by Savage Garden

Chapter Seven: Faith, by Celine Dion

Chapter Eight: New Slang, by The Shins

Chapter Nine: Scared Are You?, by Better Than Ezra

Chapter Ten: Easy Way Out, by McFLY

Chapter Eleven: Touchdown Turnaround, by Hellogoodbye

Chapter Twelve: Warning Sign, by Coldplay

Chapter Thirteen: Sad Eyes, by Enrique Iglesias

Chapter Fourteen: Made to Heal, by Our Lady Peace

Chapter Fifteen: Shut Your Eyes, by Snow Patrol

Chapter Sixteen: All I Want, by Toad the Wet Sprocket

Chapter Seventeen: Hear You Me, by Jimmy Eat World

Chapter Eighteen: A Message, by Coldplay

Chapter Nineteen: First Week, by Graham Colton Band

Chapter Twenty: Never Let You Go, by Third Eye Blind

A Final Note

I wanted to thank all of you who took the time to read this story. As I said before, it needs a lot of work and it’s far from perfect, but I’m really glad that I completed it. Thank you for reading and/or reviewing. It meant a lot to me, and I can’t thank you enough for your support. I guess my point here is to stress that I couldn’t have finished it without you all, and I’m happy that I have. It’s definitely an accomplishment. This story means a lot to me, and it’s really great that you all could read and enjoy it. Once more, thank you.

Dedications

This is the place where I’d like to make the dedications for this story:

Leah, a.k.a. Mother Grasshopper

Aiden is yours, Leah! You really supported me and inspired me with this story. I thank you for that. Remember, “Chocolate” is still your baby (even if you didn’t write it).

Chelsea, a.k.a. Gym Buddy

You can have Alex! He’s all yours, Chelsea. You supported me with this story, and you were always really enthusiastic about reading it. Thank you so much, and I hope you’ll enjoy “Special”…which is coming up, and is all about your boy Alex (Heheh… He’s your boy in real life too. Hint hint… :D)

---

This is it, everyone. Once more, thank you for reading, and I’m so happy you enjoyed it. I love you all! See you soon.
