Midnightdream-5 aka Katie/Kat x
One.
My eyelids fluttered open, the images I had just witnessed still running through my mind. The premonition had been clear and was fresh in my head, I was beginning to get used to them now, and thankfully this one had come to me in my sleep. On occasion they had come to me in the middle of me doing things, not very helpful if you’re in a life or death battle. I had started to get control them, and at least notice, the signs that one was approaching so that I could manage to try and put it off, if I needed to.
I effortlessly rose from the bed I had been sleeping in, shifting sideways under the white sheet that covered me, making sure I didn’t wake Deacon who lay beside me. I paused looking at him, he lay on his side, and hiding the marks I had given him. His dyed black hair lay across his closed eyes, he looked peaceful and I was suddenly overwhelmed by the need to touch him – to make sure he was real. To wake him, and look at the unnaturally bright green eyes that never failed to make me go weak at the knees.
Forcing myself, I averted my eyes to the rest of our room. Cars lit the small room up, as they passed on the busy road outside the miserable B’n’B we were currently staying in. it was dark outside and early in the morning, normally I’m still awake at this time, and just getting ready to settle down for the day. However we had been awake all day and most of the night in pursuit - only to then loose the trail.
I scrawled a note, explaining where I was and why, and that I wouldn’t be long, in case Deacon woke up and worried, I wanted to leave him here to sleep, as he deserved the rest. What I had foreseen was about to happen, I was certain of it, and there was an innocent person to save, not to mention there would be a lycan there, whom I wanted to see.
Quickly and silently I got changed, slipping into some black combats and a khaki green short-sleeved top, which were slung on the floor, and headed for the busy London streets. Picking up my favourite weapon on my way out, which I had hidden earlier in the bottom of the wooden wardrobe in the corner of the room. Securely strapping it at my waist.
A lot had happened since Deacon, Jonathan, and I had left my small hometown. A few months had passed and we were now deep in the month of March.
It was my seventeenth birthday next month and somehow Deacon wouldn’t let me forget, I smiled at the thought. Leaving home had been hard on me, but Deacon had helped more than he realised, and it had been necessary for us to go.
I often think back to the first time I met Deacon. The way I felt, and how I had grown to know him. How he saved my life, the first time we kissed – even if I did pass out afterwards. Eventually I came to realise it was him who I loved, he who I chose. Not Riley.
I stepped outside and the night air shook the memories forward, that all seemed an age ago, the sky was clear showing a half moon. Starting forward I thought about what had happened since I left home.
We had moved around a lot, that’s for certain, unsure of where to go, we began by fleeing to Sheffield – as it wasn’t that far away. It was soon afterwards that Harold – once our biggest enemy, now a newfound alley – informed us of the lycan’s sudden disappearing act. We knew that our luck had nothing to do with it. They were up to something, and whatever that something was, undoubtedly meant bad news for mankind.
From then onwards we’d been in search of them, in a bid to stop them gain power and to stop their ultimate plan – whatever that might be. Not to mention a certain score I had to settle.
A picture of a brown curly haired male came to mind; the yellow eyes and smug grin he had often shown me infuriated me. Still, I had managed to kill his twin.
I cleared my head of the thought, not wanting the predator side of me to take over; I’d killed her in self-defence – to protect Deacon and myself – not out of revenge.
Rudi.
I hadn’t seen him or his family, since the day they last tried to kill me, I had a feeling there would be more attempts ahead of me yet.
I stopped walking, trying to focus on my vision and where it was going to take place. I didn’t recognise the alleyway where it happened or was about to, we were in London and had only been here since the beginning of March. Everywhere looked the same to me.
Closing my eyes, I focused on letting my vampire instincts take over. I listened to the sound of cars, drowning them out to focus further, the sound of a couple near by arguing over a forgotten anniversary. A cat trying to find its next meal. Music playing.
The smell of car fumes, the smell of animals, and of people.
Then the unmistakable smell of a lycan. One I knew. And the one from my premonition.
I took to the rooftops, giving myself a better advantage, for stalking and hunting.
I flew between buildings with ease, when needed. Less than a minute later I began to slow. Hovering on a rooftop next to an alleyway, the one I recognised from my vision, because there had been a distinct large green bin on, with the graphitised words ‘get ya own junk,’ on.
I cast my senses to see how far the lycan was, it was easy to pick his sent up, and I knew that whilst he was hunting himself, he was less likely to notice that I was around.
Moments later, a teenage guy came into view – unquestionably the innocent I was about to save. I concentrated on his thoughts for a few seconds. ‘Man it’s cold.’ He hunched his shoulders up and pulled his fleece closer to his body. He was darkly dressed and with the added darkness of his dark brown hair, it would be difficult to see him with human eyes. Not a problem for my heightened vampire eyes – or the eyes of a lycan.
The bulky, dark skinned lycan was close behind, his eyes trained on the human – his prey.
I narrowed my eyes at him, inching closer and getting into a crouching position – I got ready to interfere. My lips parted and my fangs instinctively grew longer in response to the inevitable fight, seconds away.
I waited until the last possible moment before jumping off the roof. The lycan had just knocked the human to the wall of the next building, and then grasped his right hand around his neck, lifting him off the floor and bringing him closer to his mouth, which extended in the process, ready to attack. The human stayed quiet, simply struggling – to no avail. Shock and sudden fear radiated off him. I had to control my own desire to attack, and the thought of draining him of the valuable liquid running through his veins. His pulse growing louder in my ears.
Landing perfectly on my feet, in a cat like manner, I looked to the lycan and why I was there.
“Hey,” I called to the lycan’s back, his ears twitched at the sound of my voice, even in his human form; I could sense the wolf likeness. “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” I continued not resisting the line, as cliché as it was. Still it got the reaction I wanted.
The lycan’s skinhead moved, turning around to face me, releasing his hold on the human at the same time. He fell to the floor and instead of running like I had hoped; he stayed on the floor, dead still.
“Lizzie,” he said my name through clenched teeth. “I’m disappointed. What no human cavalry? Wait – you’ve never come to your senses and killed them? Or turn them?” he smiled, his teeth white against his dark skin, when I didn’t answer. “Honestly Lizzie, the way you befriend humans, anyone would find it hard to believe that they’re food to you, just as much as they are to us. One day, you’ll come to your senses and realise that. I’m hoping it’s when your starved, and you attack, those you care about most, not being able to quench your thirst until you’ve killed again and again.” I remained quiet, making sure that he’d said what he wanted to.
I looked him up and down, noting the brown leather coat he wore at full length, with fur lining. His eyes were equally brown, threatening to change into an animals, at any time. I went to read his thoughts, but he’s put up a barrier blocking me from them.
“The reason I’m here alone, Bruno, is so I can take pleasure in slowly and painfully torturing then killing you in person. I don’t suppose you’ll tell me where Rudi is now, so I can just kill you straight away? The sight of you is making me feel sick.” I could see the anger in his whole expression, I’d met Bruno a couple of times over the last few months, and each time he’d somehow managed to escape. I knew that he was Rudi’s left and right hand lycan, and he was the main key to Rudi’s whereabouts. The only problem is, that he was pretty powerful, hence the reason why Rudi had chosen him.
I sensed the other lycans approach, coming from above and below, it seemed that Bruno did have a cavalry. I stayed calm making out that I hadn’t noticed the already transformed lycans who were ready to strike. This was actually good news for me, it gave me the chance to make a dint in the lycan population after I kill them. I figured there were about twenty in total.
Of course this also meant that Bruno would more than likely escape again. Times like this I wish I had Deacon by my side, then one of us could have followed him.
The human quivered on the ground behind Bruno as he locked his eyes on the other lycans, as they inaudibly made their way down towards us. I rolled my eyes, as if this wasn’t going to be hard enough to explain.
I took out my blade and twisted around ready. A variety of coloured lycans were crawling down the side of the building and making their way across to me. Their extra long legs full of power to support them, giving them the ability to jump at a great length, if required, their tough ears standing upright on their head. All in all they were perfectly made to hunt. I smiled, my fangs showing, I held out my sword in a ready stance. Luckily for me, I was a perfect predator too.
I launched at the nearest lycan, moving swiftly and precisely. My fighting had improved over the weeks. I sliced through them, not hesitating to kill them. I was a full vampire doing what I was designed to do.
A sharp claw made contact with my face, I moved and made sure the lycan wouldn’t have the chance to do that again. I stood away from the dog breath and commotion for a second. I knew that any cuts I might have received were healed.
I spotted a lycan getting too close to the human; taking a chance I threw the sword at it, piercing it through the head. Thick blood splattered the human and he cowered back into a corner behind the dustbin.
Lycans came towards me, their teeth showing. By reading their thoughts I managed to figure out what they were planning. Doing a flip I moved forward in order to get back my blade. Landing centimetres from the lycans – now human body, I pulled the sword free, and used it to behead the lycan behind me.
I worked with a blade, because it was more sufficient. With guns, you run out of ammunition, they also make a lot of noise. A blade is silent, leaving no trace, or reason for humans to turn up and get involved. It was dependable and all I needed to do the job I required to do.
I made swift work of the remaining lycans – a couple fled, but I didn’t pursue them. Letting them go would send a message to Rudi and any others. I wasn’t easy to get rid of, nor did I fail to kill their kind.
Relaxing, I looked around the blood bath, the now human forms of the dead lycans. Getting my mobile out of my pocket I called in a favour, for this to be cleared up as soon as.
Turning around I made my way over to where the human was trying to hide. He flinched as I came into his line of view. His thoughts were making no sense and racing fast, they started to give me a headache. Stopping to read his mind – which I didn’t like to do without permission anyway unless of an emergency, I switched to make him feel safer and calmer – although I knew that would be difficult from the fact he had seen me in action – another hard thing to explain. How can you say to a stranger ‘hey, I’m a vampire – but don’t worry I’m on your side, and yes I do drink human blood.’? For a start they have to get their heads over the fact vampires are real. Once they realise that, they automatically think that means I want to kill them i.e. eat them, or drain them dry. All thanks to myths and horror movies, next they start screaming their heads of and dig out crosses and stakes.
I crouched down, so that I was at his level, plus I knew from experience that I would appear less intimidating that way.
“Hey,” I greeted my voice soft and gentle. Big brown eyes looked up at me, he was petrified. I felt for him and wanted to wrap him in a bear hug, and tell him everything was going to be alright. I doubted my cold skin would comfort him. Besides life wasn’t like that, there were creatures that went bump in the night, and I was one of them. And now this guy had been dragged into the truth, I surveyed him; he was cute looking and didn’t look much older than his late teens.
I offered him my hand, to pull him up, he was more than capable of getting up on his own, but it was much more than that. My hand offered comfort, and was a sign that hopefully showed him I wasn’t going to harm him, and more importantly that the danger had passed – for now. The only question was whether he accepted it or not.
At least I had managed to save one human, it wasn’t enough, but it was something. Bruno had probably already found and attacked another victim I couldn’t save everyone.
Slowly, he took my offer and gently I helped pull him up off the floor and onto his feet. He nervously brushed his hands on his jeans.
“My name is Lizzie,” he nodded.
“Adam.” He rubbed his face, then saw the blood and began to rub harder in an obsessive manner. I tugged gently at his warm hand to move him on, not wanting to rush him, but wanting to get back.
“Nice to meet you Adam.” I said, as he came around from the bin. He opened his mouth to speak, but then his eyes found the lycans bodies. He collapsed, being sick, then fainting altogether.
I looked down at his still body, pondering what to do. I could just leave him, and hope that when he came to, he would think what he had just seen was just a mad dream.
On the other hand, I had introduced myself and touched him, making me very real. If I left him, he might go off ranting and raving about what he had seen and people would think he was mad. That or he’d obsess about finding us and end up getting himself killed.
I leant down picking him up with ease, deciding that I better take him back with me. I carried him bridal style, and flew back to the B’n’B.
I thought it might appear suspicious if I entered the building with a guy in my arms, and both of us covered in blood. So I flew up to the window into our room and tapped on the window for Deacon to let me in. I felt a lot like I was in a scene from ‘Salem’s lot.’
I waited for a response, whilst checking that no one was around to see me.
A few moments later Deacon lifted the old window, looking at me with anger in his eyes. I squeezed through, finding it more difficult to get Adam through. Once in the room I placed Adam on the bed, before turning to Deacon. His hands were crossed over his chest and he was somewhere in between being angry and tired.
Damn, he looked so cute. I smiled.
“Where the hell have you been?” he asked. “And who the hell is he?” he shouted, flinging his arms out, pointing to Adam. I could detect a hint of jealousy in his voice. My smile widened.
“I left a note.” I replied sweetly. He narrowed his gorgeous eyes.
“A note? You put – ‘gone out, won’t be long.’ You could have been anywhere, we’d never have known if you were hurt.” I looked at him, my eyes clearly saying ‘please. Like I can’t take care of myself’
I relaxed knowing that he was just concerned.
I watched him relax himself, as he took a sigh.
I went over to him, grinning again.
“I missed you too,” I said, my lips finding his.
