The Black Brotherhood – Chapter One.
She walked down the broken road, the smoke from dying fires swirled around her. Stopping, she looked around at the one place she called home. And now that place was in ruins.
She sighed, walking over to her right, towards a house damaged past recognition. She moved to the front door, now just a black hole. She stopped and closed her eyes, and imagined what it looked like just two weeks ago.
With a small, sad smile on her dirty face, she stood on the house porch for a period of time. How long? She knew not. She didn’t even notice until she heard a noise that came from her left.
Breaking out of her trance, she looked over at the source and gave a very soft laugh. It was just an old, grey tabby cat coming out of their shelter.
Sighing, she turned back towards the street and stared at the smoke rising over the capital. Her home was now destroyed. Every thing she once knew was gone. Her life had vanished. She didn’t even know if any of her Brothers and Sisters survived. All of them had scattered after it started and didn’t show up for the meeting they had planned in case of emergency.
She sat down on the blackened porch and put her head in her hands. She sat there, looking at the house, well, what was left of it, in front of her, lost in thought. She sat there for an hour and no one had showed up. There was no doubt that she thought no one else survived. That thought later startled her when some one did show up.
As she was sitting on the porch, a rock landed at her feet making her give a little jump. She scoped the area and smiled when she saw a man standing at the end of the yard.
She stood up and moved towards him but stopped a foot away from him, not sure what to do. She studied his face, every crick and cranny, making sure that is was him and not someone who looked like him.
The man grinned at her and opened his arms slightly. “Well, are you just gonna stand there or are you gonna hug me?”
That was all she needed and jumped into his arms, holding him tight. As she held him, she smiled as smile that she hadn’t given in the longest time. It was her joyous smile. The smile that showed the one emotion she rarely had. Happiness.
They stood in the street, holding each, for a few moments before he whispered into her ear.
“I’m glad you’re all right,” he said softly, his breath tickling her ear.
She just nodded into his chest, not wanting to let go of him, afraid that he might disappear. The man now laughed at her softly, knowing what she was doing.
“I am not going to leave you.”
She looked up at him from his chest, looking into his eyes as if searching to see if he was telling the truth. She had been told this before but the promise had been broken, along with her heart.
Finding that he was telling the truth, she smiled and whispered, “Good.”
The man pulled back from her and smiled. She looked at him, wondering why he pulled away but her eyes sparkled when he hand took hers.
“C’mon,” he said, tugging at her. “Let’s get outta here. We got work to do.”
