Whisper Softly
Chapter 2 - 18-Hundred Hours
Viviana took her place on stage along side Sasha, and the music for “America” began to play. The routine began as each performed opposite ronde de jambes into back attitude turns.
“Puerto Rico,
You lovely island…
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing…” Sasha sang as she spun across the stage.
“Puerto Rico,
You ugly island…
Always the hurricanes blowing,
Always the population growing…
And the money owing,
And the babies crying,
And the bullets flying.
I like the island Manhattan.
Smoke on your pipe and put that in!” Viviana continued the song as she danced on with the pas de bourree assemble, into the pas de chat section.
The rest of the number was completed to perfection by both dancers, or so the casting directors and most of the dancers thought. The two dancers came back to center stage, bowed to the directors, and walked off stage. ‘I think that actually went well! Hmm… seems like Davin’s my good luck charm! Oh my gosh, I hope he thought I did good as well…,” Viviana idly ranted to herself as she walked, eyes closed in an attempt to calm down, to the wing, to the awaiting Davin.
“Davin, did… did I do alri-- you’re not here…” she realized as she opened her eyes. Disappointment evident in her large green eyes as she quickly checked the other wings on the off chance he moved, but no luck. Dejectedly she walked off until she collided with a body, “Oh, I’m sorry Fidelio…”
“It’s alright.” he smiled as he turned to leave.
“Oh! Can I ask you something,” he nodded, “Well, did you happen to see Davin walk past here?”
“Sì, pochi minuti fa. Posso chiedere perché?”
“Oh, a few minutes ago really? Umm, no particular reason just wanted to say ‘Goodbye’ is all…”
“I see, I’m sorry for that slip up, although I did not know you spoke Italian.”
“Well, bits and pieces. When your entire family is Italian you pick up a few things, but you would know all about that…” she replied anxiously just wishing to leave.
“Yes.” he smiled.
“Well I have to go, Arrivederci!” Viviana called as she turned and walked away. ‘UGH! I’m so disgusted with myself! Just because I watched him doesn’t mean he’s gonna watch me… ‘good luck charm’ yeah right! Why am I so upset about this?! It doesn’t make any sense, I mean… I don’t even know what I mean!’ Viviana screamed at herself as she made her way through backstage to her bag in the lobby. Hastily she changed her shoes and zipped u p her bag.
As she stood up she heard a soft patter of footsteps heading her way I the otherwise quiet lobby. As they drew closer Viviana froze, until a warm hand touched her shoulder. She gasped as she turned around and came face to “face” with the upper abdomen of a male once again. This time the hand grasped her shoulder and the man took a deep breath, “Viviana, I’ve been looking all over for you!”
“You have?” she inquired a little taken aback, she didn’t expect to hear that.
“Yeah, after your audition I… uhh… I had to go to the bathroom,” he admitted embarrassed, “I told Fidelio to tell you that I’d meet you back at the wing. He didn’t tell you?”
“No… I asked if he had seen you, he said he had… it must have slipped his mind.” she mused. She reached for her coat. “Well, any particular reason for your running search of me?” she asked as she buttoned her coat.
“Yes actually. I was wondering if I could have your number so we could maybe hang out sometime?” he asked looking between her face and the floor.
“Yeah, of course. Uh, do you have a pen?” she asked while finding paper but no pen.
“I think so… Yes, I do!” he stated happily as he dug one out of his pocket. Viviana quickly scribbled down her cell and hotel numbers.
“I’m sorry, but I have to go. I’ll se ya later, kay?”
“Yeah, of course,” he replied and she turned around and walked away, “Viviana, wait!”
“What is it?” she inquired as she looked over her shoulder at him.
“What time do we have to be back here by?”
“Seriously?” she asked in slight disbelief as she slowly turned the rest of the way to face him from afar. He only nodded slowly a hint of pink touched his cheeks. Viviana giggled slightly, but stopped suddenly and slowly walked toward Davin. When she was not but three inches away she craned he neck and looked straight up at him, the pink now visible to her, “18-hundred hours.” she whispered and walked away quickly.
‘Hmm… Well, there’s no point in going to the hotel…so, I guess…’ “The ice cream
parlor two streets over.” she answered as she searched her bag for some money for the fare. She would have walked, but the weather wasn’t exactly favorable for the activity. The cab pulled up in front of the little place; Viviana gave the fare to the driver and got out the cab. She sighed as she opened the door, ‘Screw body self-conscienceness I want ICE CREAM!’
She took a minute to read the menu. She walked up to the young girl behind the counter and ordered, “A small chocolate gelato, please.” The young girl nodded and scooped the gelato into a cone and handed it to her in exchange for the money. Viviana scanned the room and found an empty table in the center of the room. Once she had took her coat off and sat down she felt a tap on her shoulder, and a familiar voice say, “Long time no see.”
