The school bell rang and I as well as a large group of students make their way through the halls of O’Gorman secondary school cheering. I was standing at my locker with my three friends; Kimberly, Chrissie, and Tiffany.
My name is Lola Manfini and I am of average height and build, wavy brown hair and deep blue eyes, and I am sixteen.
“Finally, summer is here!” I yelled.
“I know it is time to party!” cheered Kimberly.
“Hey, don’t forget tomorrow some serious mall time.” reminded Tiffany. We all screamed as I turned to close my locker. Just then Zach, the school hottie and captain of most of the sports teams at O’Gorman approached me.
“Hey, Lola.” he said as he leaned against the locker nearby.
“Hey, Zach.” I said shyly.
“Some friends and I are having a party tomorrow tonight, you should come.” he said handing me a flyer.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I will be there.” he replied.
“Okay.” I said.
And I must have blushed because he began to smile.
“See you there.” he said as he walked away.
The other girls screamed in excitement.
“He so likes you.” Kimberly said.
They began to giggle and started to head down the hallway. I had not been paying any attention to where I was going by talking with my friends so that is when I turned the corner, I and two other students went crashing to the floor.
“Lola! Are you okay?” Chrissie asked.
I nodded as I sat up to look at who I had crashed into. I paused as I looked at the girls faces. Something inside of me was telling me that I had seen them before, but I couldn’t remember where. One of the girls was taller than me, she had straight brown hair with blonde streaks, pale skin and blue eyes. The other girls was about the same height as I was, she had long, straight brown hair with red and blonde streaks, green eyes, pale skin and leather black bracelets up her arms.
“Well, that’s one way to start your summer off with a bang.” I joked.
The three of us laughed, then got up so we wouldn’t be trampled by the passing students.
“Do I know you guys from somewhere?” I asked.
“I-…” the shorter one started but Kimberly came in and grabbed my arm and pulled me away.
“Come on we’ll be late.” she said.
As I was being dragged off, I turned back and waved goodbye. “I know them from somewhere?” I thought. “I have never seen them before in my life” Or had I?
The next day I met up with Kimberly, Chrissie, and Tiffany at the mall.
“This is so awesome, this summer will be the best.” said Tiffany.
“Especially if Lola hooks up with Zach.” Kimberly said.
I must have blushed again because the others began to laugh. “Hey, let’s go to Bloomingdales!” cried Chrissie.
“Yeah!” agreed Tiffany and Kimberly. “I will meet you guys there.” I said.
“Are you sure?” asked Kimberly.
“Yeah. I just have to stop somewhere first.” I lied.
“Okay, see you soon.” exclaimed Tiffany and with that they ran off.
As they took off, I walked off in the other direction, I needed to clear my head and decided to walk around. I walked passed a lot of stores, then suddenly I came to one that caught my eye. It gave off a smell of burning candles and incense. Hanging in the display window was a metal moon and star. I had never seen this store before, and decided to take a look. I walked in and the store owner looked at me and smiled. She had fair skin, red hair, and was athletic looking. She was only a little taller than me was and looked to be in about her twenty’s.
“Can I help you?” she asked.
“How long has this store been here?” I asked.
“Not long, I just opened up a week ago.” the shop keeper said.
I nodded in understanding and then began to look around.
“If there is something I can help you with let me know.” the owner said. “Okay, I will.” I said.
“Take your time.” she said.
I nodded and then walked around the store for what seemed like a while, this place was amazing. When I got to an archway to get to the back of the store. I looked at it curiously. It looked like glass but when I touched it I felt a cool breeze on my hand. I walked through it and a gust of wind came out of no where and whipped through my hair. When the wind stopped the store owner started to approach me.
“What was that?” I asked.
“You have come, finally!” she said in excitement.
“What did I win a contest?” I asked.
“No.” Colleen replied.
“Then what?” I asked.
“Please, follow me, there is something I would like to show you.” the store owner said.
I followed her into the storage room. Only there was no storage, the only objects in the room was a round table and some chairs. Sitting at the table were four teenage girls that looked the same age as myself. As I sat down I looked around at each girl and paused when I got to the two girls sitting almost a crossed from where I was sitting. They were the two girls I crashed into yesterday.
One of the other girls was my height, had frizzy brown shoulder length hair with red streaks, her eyes were blue and her skin was pale.
The other girl had straight, short dark brown hair, her skin was dark, her eyes were brown, and she looked a little bit shorter than me.
The shop keeper came back into the room carrying a wooden box.
“I have been waiting a long time for you girls.” she said “My name is Colleen Brooks, and I am the guardian of the elements.”
The room went silent as we all looked at each other in confusion.
“Do you know who you girls are?” she asked.
We all shook their heads.
“Haven’t your parents mentioned anything?” she asked.
The room was still silent.
“Oh my, I have my work cut out for me. Okay, you five are The Element Goddesses. You are here to fulfill the prophecy and save Maynor.” Colleen said.
“Maynor?” I asked.
“It is another world from this one, filled with magical creatures. It is where your families are originally from but for your own protection moved here away from it all.” Colleen explained.
“Prophecy?” the one with dark skin asked.
“Look right now I don’t have a lot of time to explain. But there are some books that I can give you to read and catch up with.” Colleen explained.
“Are you expecting us to believe that we are these supernatural beings that are destined to save this world of Maynor?” the tall one asked.
Colleen nodded with a smile.
“I am out of here.” the one with brown, red, and blonde hair said as she began to stand up.
“No wait! I can prove it.” Colleen said.
The girl sat back down as Colleen opened the wooden box and handed each of us a necklace each with a different symbol.
As she handed them to us she said an element. Mine had a triangle with three horizontal curved lines. Air.
“Put them on.” Colleen instructed.
We all looked at each other in confusion and then obeyed what Colleen had said.
“Now I am going to recite an incantation, when I am finished I want you all to say it together.” Colleen said.
She picked up a piece of paper out of the box and read it out loud.
“Calling on this ancient power,
Growing more within the hour.
Activating the powers to unite,
To set things right let the heirs take flight”
We all looked at each other in confusion then closed our eyes and said the spell together.
“Calling on this ancient power,
Growing more within the hour.
Activating the powers to unite,
To set things right let the heirs take flight”
I opened my eyes and above my head there were bright, colourful lights swirling around. Filling up the room with joy and happiness. I looked down at my chest and saw my necklace was glowing. I could feel the power rushing through my veins. I had never seen or felt anything like it in my life, the lights all rushed into each of our necklaces. When the glow had left, there was silence in the room.
Then Colleen finally said “And you didn’t believe me”
“What was that?” the girl with the frizzy brown hair with red streaks asked.
“That was your powers, your ancestors sent them to you, to fulfill the prophecy.” replied Colleen.
Colleen got up and left the room and when she came back she was carrying five navy blue leather books that on the cover had the word Prophecy in gold lettering. We all looked at the books as Colleen handed to them to us.
“Well I have to care for the store so, if you want you may stay and start to read or discuss, or you may leave but you must tell no one, and do not let any one hear you talk of it. You never know who may be listening. Meet back here when your necklace begin to glow, never take them off, they will protect you, and warn you.” Colleen explained.
We all nodded and then we decided to leave. We all walked out of the store and stood facing each other in a circle
“My name is Melanie Koop.” the one with dark skin said and then stood there waiting for some one to carry on.
“I am Jennifer Bonneville.” said the girl with frizzy brown and blonde hair.
“My name is Cindy Langlois.” said the tall girl from the day before.
“I am Raven Leonardo.” said the girl with brown, red, and blonde hair.
“I’m Lola Manfini.” I said with a smile.
We all nodded and there was a awkward silence.
“Well I have to go.” I said. “Me too.” the others said together.
We all left in separate directions and I went to meet the others but suddenly didn’t feel like shopping much, so I stayed with them long enough to get a new outfit for that night. If I thought I had a lot to think about before, it was nothing compared to now. I decided to walk home while Kimberly, Chrissie, and Tiffany finish shopping.
I have magical powers, I am the Goddess of Air, that was what Colleen had said to me any way. As I continued to walk it began to become stifling hot. The weather forecasters called for this summer to be the hottest one in years, and naturally I was walking in it.
Then an idea had come to me, I am the Goddess of Air, am I not, why not make a cool breeze. So I ducked behind some bushes where I thought no one could see me and crouched down and held on to my necklace and closed my eyes, then I pictured the wind. Blowing through the trees and whipped through my hair. I slightly opened my eyes, but nothing happened.
It was still muggy and still as it was before I crouched down here, if not worse. I sighed and thought Okay try again I can do this. I closed my eyes tighter and concentrated on a gust of wind strong enough to get rid of the humidity. I concentrated for a few minutes and nothing happened. With another sigh of disappointment I stood up and continued to walk home. I really wished that it had worked because the humidity was beginning to get to me.
When suddenly my necklace began to glow and a gust of wind swept over me and it felt so refreshing, I stood there a moment before jumping up and down in celebration. I ran home with such happiness I forgot all about my friends, my computer, and everything else. When I got home, I laid on my bed with such in a daze, then I realized oh no I am the Goddess of Air.
Later that night I got ready for the party and I was just finishing getting ready when Kimberly, Tiffany, and Chrissie showed up. I said goodbye to my mom and dad and then the four of us climbed into Kimberly’s car. She drove us all to Zach’s party.
When we were close we could start to hear the music two blocks away. Once inside, the place was packed with people, some I recognized from school but not that many. Kimberly, Tiffany, and Chrissie soon left me to find guys to hang out with. I walked around looking for Zach. After a few minutes I was getting worried that he had forgotten about me. Then someone tapped me on the shoulder and turned to see Zach smiling back at me.
“Hi.” he yelled.
“Hi.” I replied.
“Hey, do you want something to drink?” he asked.
I thought about it and remembered that some of the other partiers were a little tipsy so I replied “No thanks”
We both looked around at the rest of the party and I noticed that it was getting even more crowded by the minute.
“It is a little crowded down here, want to go upstairs?” he asked.
I could feel my necklace heat up a little on my chest and I could see it begin to glow so I tried to cover it up.
I thought about it for a second and then yelled “Okay”
So he took my hand and led me upstairs.
When we finally found a room that wasn’t occupied we sat down on the bed. “I am really glad that you came.” Zach said.
“Me too.” I said shyly.
He gazed into my eyes and then began to move closer to me. We kissed and as we were kissing I was so out of it that I almost didn’t notice where his hands were. They were slowly moving up underneath my shirt. I pushed his hands back down and he pulled away.
“What?” he asked.
“I don’t want to move that fast.” I said.
“Oh come on.” he said with a laugh and continued kissing me and lifting my shirt.
All of a sudden my necklace began to glow really bright. He moved back, at the brightness of the light, when it stopped glowing I was ready to leave.
“What was that?” he asked.
“My cue to leave.” I replied.
I walked over to the door and then went into panic when I realized the door was locked. I turned back to face him and he had an innocent look on his face.
“Zach why is the door locked?” I asked nervously.
“Well, I wouldn’t want you to get away, now would I?” he replied.
“Look, this isn’t funny any more, let me out!” I cried.
“Oh come on. It is just me.” Zach said as he began to move closer to me.
I turned around and tried to pry the door open, I yelled trying to get some one’s attention. No one came, I was locked in this room with Zach ready to do some thing I wasn’t. He took my hand and put his other hand on my waist.
“Just relax.” he said.
He pulled me closer to him and began to slid his hand up from my waist. I slapped his face and he stepped back from the shock then he became very angry. He grabbed both my arms and I began to scream as I did my necklace began to glow again, this time even longer and brighter than the last. Zach took a few steps back and then fell to the ground, then a few seconds later I could hear Raven at the door behind me. The glow stopped and I could see Zach sitting on the floor unable to see much because of the light.
“Lola!” Raven yelled.
“Yeah.” I replied.
“Are you all right? Open the door.” she said.
I could tell that she was worried and that made me feel a little better.
“He has locked me in.” I said.
“Who?” she asked.
“Zach.” I replied.
“Move away from the door.” she said.
I took a few steps backward and didn’t notice that Zach had recovered his sight and stood up.
“What was that?” he asked.
I jumped to face him, and he looked at me in confusion.
“That was so cool.” he said and began to move closer to me again.
Just then Raven smashed the door open he looked over towards her then back at me.
“Brought more friends to join the party?” he said then put his arm around me.
That was it, I had, had it. I elbowed him in the stomach and then punched him in the face. He fell to the floor writhing in pain.
“Wow.” Raven said.
As we walked out of the room I whispered to her “And I didn’t even need to use my powers”
Raven’s mom gave me a ride home, when they were dropping me off I said to Raven “Thanks for everything”
“Hey, we need to stick together.” she said.
I smiled and went inside the house and to bed.
The next morning I woke up and walked into my bathroom. I kept thinking something was different but I didn’t know what it was, that is until I looked in the mirror and saw the amulet hanging from my neck.
“Oh yeah.” I said to myself as I twirled it in between my fingers.
Suddenly it began to glow I was a little startled, remembering what happened last night I looked around for oncoming danger. I jumped when the phone rang, when I picked it up I began to relax when it was Kimberly.
“Hey Lola.” she said.
“Hey, what is up?” I asked.
“Well, the girls and I were wondering if you wanted to come and get smoothies with us.” she replied.
“I need to clean up and then I can meet you guys. Come over in an hour.” I said.
“Sure. Okay.” she said then I hung up.
Still a little edgy of what I thought was a warning, I walked back into my room and cleaned myself up making sure to watch my back.
An hour later the three of them showed up and we went out to get the smoothies. After a little while of talking to the girls I began to relax and eventually forget about my pendant glowing this morning, that is until I saw all four girls heading straight for us.
“Hey.” I said with a smile.
“Hey.” the four of them replied.
“Uh Lola, can we talk to you for a minute?” Raven asked.
“No.” Kimberly said.
I turned to the three of them and said “Look guys just give me a minute and I will be right with you, okay, hold on.” I took a few steps over and faced the others.
“Lola I don’t mean to break up this fun fest but Colleen needs to speak to us now! Didn’t you see your necklace glowing earlier?” asked Jennifer.
“Yeah but I thought it was warning me of something I have been on look out all morning. We were going to go for smoothies but I can do that later, just let me tell them.” I said and then turned back to face Kimberly, Chrissie, and Tiffany.
“Hey guys, I have some bad news, you will have to go for smoothies without me. Something has come up and I need to deal with it.” I said.
“What? What is going on Lola? We are your friends not them, come on.” Chrissie complained.
“You are my friends. Look you guys go ahead and get those smoothies I will just get a rain check and meet up with you guys later, while I finish up with them. Okay?” I said hoping they would understand.
“Look whatever, we are out of here.” said Tiffany. I stood there watching them walk off hoping they would forgive me.
Then I turned around and said “This better be important”
The five of us all walked together to the magical store where we had received their powers.
