Prologue

We had the basic best friend complex. We met on the first day of kindergarten, and being so young we became best friends and never looked back. He lived down the road from me, and so we were never apart.

It was so good, so perfect, and so we stayed friends. Even when we moved up into high school it was good. We managed to convince our parents to let us go to the same school, and for that sake, we had the time of our lives. We laughed, cried and shared during those two years, spending every waking moment together. Never once did I think that could all change. Never once did I think that those times, despite being happy, would be all too short, and once they were through, we’d never be the same again.

‘Take me back to the sweet times,
Hot nights,
Everything is going to be alright,
In the summertime,
Yeah baby in the summertime,
That is where I’ll be.’
– Summertime, Thirsty Merc
