Chapter 3: Failorn

Rachel: “Hello? Any one in here?” I called as I entered the stables. Looking around quickly I stepped back outside to where Jay, KC, and Matrai were waiting. “The coast is clear.” I told them. Matrai and KC sighed in relief. “My parents must have finished the chores earlier. Let me check the house for a note.” With that I ran inside.

Jay: As Rachel ran inside I led the two horses to their stalls. Then I waved to KC and Matrai. “This way.” I called. They followed me up the ladder into the loft. “Wow.” Matrai said with astonishment as we entered the loft. “Yea, she definitely put some time into this place.” I replied. The carpet was a bright lime green color and the wood walls were a tango-y orange color. As we walked in further I noted the bright purple chairs and funky aqua blue lamp. “She’s got this bright retro look in here.” I heard Matrai whisper. In the center of the room was a low table. I walked over and examined the pictures of Comet. Just then I heard KC gasp. “Guys, come here. Check this out.” She said excitedly. I hurried over. I peered over her shoulder. “ Wow.” Was all I could say.

Rachel: I walked in just as Jay saw my wall. “Like it?” I asked he whipped around. “Where did you get all those pictures?” He asked. I walked over. This was my collage wall. I had pictures of Comet, Me, horses, and a whole lot of Jay and I. My mom had gone through all her photos a couple of weeks ago. She had found loads of pictures of Jay and I as kids. There were ones of Jay and I with the dogs. And Jay and I with horses. There were pictures of us as babies swimming in the kiddie pool. There was my favorite one of Jay eating his birthday cake. He had fallen asleep in his cake and there was frosting covering his face. Just then Matrai found my favorite. “Hey!” Jay exclaimed. “Where did you get that?” KC and I laughed till we were in tears. Jay calmed down still embarrassed and Matrai finally asked about the note. “Oh yea.” I said. “Mom left a note saying she had to run into town for a while. She said Jay’s parents had to see the vet about the dog’s treatment. They won’t be home till tomorrow and he’s staying with us. My mom will be home by late tonight. left a note on the fridge saying we were going to sleep out here.” I finished. “Great.” KC said. “I didn’t want to spend the night outside in the woods.” We all settled down and I ordered pizza.

Jay: ChoakCough “I think my pepperoni went down the wrong way.” I said half coughing. Matrai was showing off to Rachel, flicking his pepperoni into the air and catching it in his mouth. The two girls clapped. I rolled my eyes. Sheesh. This guy didn’t waste a second showing off his new found talent. I smiled. What the heck. “Hey watch this.” I said. The girls turned their attention to me. I flicked the pepperoni into the air and moved under it. Plop! The pepperoni hit my nose and splattered my face with sauce. “Pass the napkins.” I said laughing. Everyone smiled. We were having a great time. “Hey everyone, it’s after eleven. We should get to bed.” Rachel said. I watched her tinker with her watch for a moment. I couldn’t help thinking how pretty her hair shone in this light. “Jay…hello, are you there?” Matrai asked. I snapped out of it. We helped the girls unfold the bed from the couch. Then we spread out some blankets on the floor. Matrai and I lay down on the floor and the girls jumped on to the bed. “Goodnight.” Everyone said. As I drifted off to sleep I remembered something. I forgot to see if she wanted to go to a movie, I thought.

Rachel: At first I couldn’t fall asleep. I tossed and turned in bed. KC woke once and told me to quit moving in a sleepy voice. She was asleep again in a minute. Finally, I walked over to the window. I gazed out at the paddock where the horses hung their heads in a peaceful arch. As I scanned them, I started to whisper their names. Skylark, Rudie, Journey, Simba, Beauty, Clyde,…. Then as I spoke the name Indy, a voice from behind me said it too. I turned around to see Jay standing behind me. I smiled and we continued together picking up where I’d left off; Dancer, Cupid, Comet, Saturn, Baby, and Secret. Even after we finished we stayed still, watching the darkness soften into the first colors of dawn. Suddenly, Jay pulled me away from the window and yanked down the shade. He put a finger to his lips. I gave him a questioning look. From across the room KC and Matrai sat up in their beds. They turned toward the window and when I caught a glimpse of their faces I saw that they were both shocked and pale. Suddenly, Matrai turned into a dragon and I watched shocked as KC’s hands began to glow a royal blue. Jay pulled me away from the window. “What’s going on?” I whispered anxiously. “There is something right outside the barn, and it isn’t human.” he whispered.

Jay: I had barely gotten the words out of my mouth when the room felt suddenly cold. A chill ran up my spine and Rachel grabbed my arm. Suddenly, in less then a second a black cloaked figure was standing in the room. Although no one spoke he gave off this tingle of “bad.” He glanced toward. I felt frozen to the spot until his gaze moved on. I watched as he walked around the room slowly. Then he spoke. “Where are they?” his voice echoed coolly in the room. I felt suddenly dizzy but managed to answer. “They who?” I asked weakly. He crossed the room with swiftness. Our faces were only an inch apart. His skin was a grey color and his eyes were a cold combination of black and gray. They seemed to be looking right into me. I controlled myself and forced my words to come out calm. “I don’t understand.” He pulled away. “Simple species.” He muttered to himself. As he moved toward the window on my right I noticed for the first time the absence of Matrai and KC. They were gone. Suddenly understanding what he meant, I backed up shocked. It was then that I remembered Rachel. I turned to see her creeping away from the hooded creature. She was stepping on the ladder when he spun around and moved to her. Before I could move to her side there was a blast of icy cold wind and I could not move. My legs were stuck to the floor and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t free myself. Mean while the creature was pulling Rachel across the room by the back of her shirt. She struggled but seemed to be too terrified to do anything more then kick her feet. Upon reaching the window he opened it and began pushing her through. “No1” I yelled but if I was heard he did nothing to show it. Rachel, still clinging to the window ledge, suddenly spoke a rush of words and thrust her hands forward toward the thing. A strange purple flash shot out and sent him flying into the room. Somehow the force holding me down was released and I stumbled forward. I raced to the window but there was nothing. She had let go. From behind, an icy grasp pulled me back. And that was the last I remembered.

Rachel: I had no idea where the words had come from, but I said them as loud as I could. I never could recall the exact reason my hands flew out they just did. Then I was falling. I was waiting to hit the ground when Matrai (the dragon) conveniently soared beneath me. KC was also on his back. She pulled me up behind her and we flew to the safety of the woods. “Wait, Jay1” I said remembering we had left him. “He’s in there with that creep.” Matrai landed and we jumped off quick. “Be right back.” He said. We watched as he flew to the window then amazingly squeezed through. “How’d he…” I started. KC cut me off. “Magic.” She said. We waited quietly. I watched intently for the moment when Matrai would fly out. I looked down at my watch. Ten minutes then twenty. My legs were starting to cramp when Matrai finally emerged from the loft. He squeezed through the window and swooped toward us. But when he landed there was no Jay on his back. Before I could ask he spoke. “He isn’t there.” Matrai said softly. “Where…where is he then?” I said gulping in the cold night air. KC and Matrai answered together. “Failorn.”

Far away in a land known as Failorn, a cruel hooded figure mercilessly sent the king into another universe. Then he sat in the royal chair and laughed. It was at this time that his assistant and right hand man walked in followed by salves carrying a cage. Inside sat a mere boy. The boy was carried closer until the man saw his weak shape. “You brought me a human.” He said seething out the last word. The assistant, not brought down for a moment responded. “He will lead the others here. And very soon.”
