“You’re a dirty liar.”

“Only for you, my love.”

“You only wished you loved me.”

“I try my hardest every day.”

His smile faded a bit, only a bit. He has that look in his eyes again, that regret. I know what’s coming.

“If...If you could, you know, love me…would you?”

My emotionless exterior portrayed none of the preordained feelings I was currently struggling to actually feel.

“What do you mean, Kuo?”

I see it. His annoyance at my feigned confusion rips me apart. I hate lying to him, but…it’s the way it has to be. The way I was made.

“You know damn well what I mean Kade! You know that if you were human you’d love me! If you weren’t…whatever the hell kind of machine you are you’d love me as much…” he paused here for a sob. I hated when he did this. “…As much as I love you!” he replied indignantly. He did it.

The only problem with this situation is that I was real. I was human…

I’m just not anymore.

Kuo used to be my brother, until I died. You can’t really call it a death seeing as it was more of a coma than anything, but my everything ended on that day. The day the world ended and the populace of Earth was evacuated. A part of me died on that day…

“I can fly!” He jumped.

“You’re such a weirdo, Kuo…” I watched him fall.

“That’s how you like me, Kade,” he replied as he emerged from the hot spring water. “I can’t believe Mother and Father finally gave in and decided to take us to the hot springs. It still seems unreal.”

“That’s only because you can’t stand how amazing I look half naked, little brother.”

“Oh yeah, right. You are SO attractive niisan (1).” Snide brat. He ought to be taught a lesson…

“GAHHgplppbpll…!” I pushed him under…

“What was that, little brother? Oh I love you, too. Hn…what did you say? I’m Mom and Dad’s favorite? How kind of you.” I let him up with a triumphant smirk.

With a few splutters and deep breaths he responded with a, “No fair! You’re bigger!”

“Just because I’M thirteen and you’re ten doesn’t mean I’m stronger…” we stared at one another, well, more like glared on his part, “No, never mind, it does.”

We laughed together for a moment until we both seemed to suddenly realize that it was awful quiet and dark to be 2:00 p.m.

“Kade…didn’t Father say he was going to be joining us? Where is he? That was over an hour ago…”

He said this after glancing at my watch, which was placed off to the side of the spring. I realized that he was right. “We better go inside, little bro. I feel weird.”

With a knowing nod, we climbed out of the spring and I shivered as I felt an irregular chill go up my spine. Where did that come from? I don’t ever remember shivering, even when it WAS cold. Something was definitely wrong.

“Come on, hurry up, Kuo.” He fumbled after me to get his last shoe on.

We got to the house that we rented near the springs. It was summer vacation and we were supposed to be staying there for a month. The house was empty.

I felt Kuo step a little closer to me.

“Kade, where’re Mother and Father?”

“I’m afraid I can’t answer that question Kuo.”

Suddenly I heard alarms, off in the distance. They were too far to reach by foot, yet it seemed as if they were shredding my ears to pieces. I was terrified. They only sounded off the alarms if it was an environmental emergency. Usually it was a tornado or something of that nature, but that didn’t seem to be it.

“The spaceship, Kade the spaceship!”

I flung my head to the sky so viciously that I winced in pain. There it was. One spaceship. One bright red spaceship went off into the unknown. They only used the spaceships for…oh God…

“Kuo we have to get out of here!”

We began running…I don’t think either of us knew to where, but we ran like crazy. We reached one of the neighboring houses at one point and opened the door, which was thankfully unlocked. We saw the frightened family of three stare at us in shock as they halted their actions simultaneously. Rogen, the man, Elisa, his wife, and their daughter Luna stared at us as we ran in panicked.

“What’s happening? Our parents are gone!” Kuo yelled in a moment of annoyance at their lack of speech.

Elisa shared a knowing look with her husband and then he stepped forward to us.

“There…There is a disease. It’s spreading rapidly from an unidentifiable life force and location and it’s global, boys. This is big. It’s killing all the life on Earth as if it was paper to flame. They had an announcement on the TV that they are evacuating Earth and sending as many people to the various bases on Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter as they can on the Red Angels. The spaceships, that is. Your parents may have already left…”

I saw Luna’s face contort into a disbelieving grimace. I was thinking the same thing, I’m sure.

How could they leave their children to die?

“Kade, what are we going to do, Kade?” Kuo whispered to me with fear lacing his every syllable.

“I-” I was cut off…

“Come with us please, we’re leaving right away.” Elisa spoke this with those kind elderly eyes that she had.

I placed a hand to my short red hair. Not orange, not strawberry blonde, blood red. I always felt it was something of a curse to be stained with the color of blood in such a noticeable place. My darling brother currently beside me was gifted with the beautiful ebony tresses in which I adored…I lived for.

“Yes…yes, thank you so much, Mrs. Deblioux.”

She smiled and they all resumed packing away their things before rushing off to the car parked on the grass. There were no roads near…we’d have to drive out a few miles to get to one.

We filed into the car with Kuo in between Luna and I in the back seat, and Rogen was driving. Time seemed to no longer exist as we raced to an unknown place. He drove as if he knew something else that we didn’t. He drove as if he knew that something big was going to happen…to us.

“Raven born, Raven fall, Raven guide sleep to all…”

“God damn it, Luna! What did I tell you about that sinner’s chant?” Mr. Rogen seemed more afraid than angry.

“It’s not a chant, Papa, it’s a…a prayer. It’s to call upon the raven, the bird of death and fear. To call upon it to help guide us through these things.”

“I thought the crow was the bird of death…what? I’m confused…” Kuo stated as he squinted his beautiful hazel, almost golden, eyes.

“In the philosophy of Timeus the birdsinger, it is the bird of Death. Raven is like…a form of the Reaper. Only it is the Earth born form. It is the bird that can save and take life from anything and anyone. We must all pray to it in order to keep it at peace with us.”

“Yeah, well I think it’s just Devil talk!”

“Dear, please…not here…” Elisa tried to interject.

“Don’t DEAR me, I will not have that DEVIL talk in my-”

“Father, where we’re going, heaven and hell do not exist, Earth will be a memory and the Devil’s presence will hardly seem a threat…”

“Luna, I…I want to hear the prayer…I want to learn it.” I spoke to her. I felt…like I needed to.

“Yeah, me too, Luna, I want to learn it.” Kuo repeated.

With a triumphant smile, the sixteen-year-old girl began to speak once more, “Raven born, Raven fall, Raven guide sleep to all. Raven scorn, Raven call, Raven bring love for all. Raven we’ll keep you withal. Raven-sweet, black, beauty of death. Raven keep us and hold within us our breath.”

I watched enchanted as she repeated these words over and over. Soon I found myself in harmony with her. It was like a chant, as Rogen had said. I heard Kuo miming us perfectly as well. It was almost a hysterical event. Our pace seemed to quicken along with Rogen’s driving, I could hear Elisa in the background telling him to slow down…telling him to be calm, and yet everything grew more frantic.

We stopped…at the same time, the three of us. It was as if we knew we had said it enough to make a change, to put it into affect. Kuo looked at me beautifully then. I glanced out of the window for a moment to see that we were nearing some sort of an airport. I looked back to Kuo who was now facing me completely.

He pulled my head down to his level where he whispered something to me that I will never forget.

“Kade, I love you more than this world is fated to end. Please, I don’t want to be alone. Tell me you’ll love me forever.”

I didn’t really know what he meant then. I thought he meant it brotherly, so I told him for his sake and because I thought I would be able to.

“I’ll love you forever, Kuo.”

“You’re a dirty liar.”

“Only for you, my love.”

We smiled at each other…sadly actually. Like we knew.

Like we knew the tires would blow out. Like we knew we’d crash into a ditch. Like we knew we’d be ejected from the car.

We were so close… we were so close to the docks. I could see the Red Angels lined up, aimed for the sky where the planes had originally been landed. I could see people rushing, filing into them yelling things like “Armageddon” and “Apocalypse”.

I hurt…so bad, everywhere. We had to leave this planet now…I could feel something horrible coming.

My arm, I landed on it. It was broken. I knew it was, and my ankle was twisted. All I was worried about, though, was Kuo. I looked for him and saw him struggling to open his eyes.

“Kuo…” I whispered hoarsely, “Kuo, are you…”

“Let’s go Kade, we have to go…” I heard something in his voice that I had never heard before. I didn’t know what it was… knowledge maybe? Maybe it was urgency. I just didn’t know, but it scared me…and I stood up. We ran. I limped actually. We didn’t have time to check on the Deblioux, it was here I knew it…

Kuo wasn’t really injured aside from some scratches…I only wondered how he and I survived that with such minimal injury when the Deblioux made not a sound after we crashed.

We saw one Red Angel being filled up, the closest one. We made our way to it.

“WAIT! Please wait for us!” Kuo ran ahead of me and some sort of officer helped him up the flight of steps to the ship’s entrance. Before I could reach the steps, the officer stopped me.

“I’m sorry sir, we only had room for one more. We’re sealing this Angel up. Go find another one.”

“WHAT?! Well then, send my brother back down here! I’m not going anywhere without him!”

“Sorry sir, I can’t do that,” He said it with a smirk almost…a kind of mischievous grin that he tried to hide…

“Bring him to me NOW! KUO! KUO!”

“SIR, WE DON’T NEED YOU TO ADD TO THE PANIC NOW GET BACK!” He pushed me down to the ground where I landed on my broken arm…

I yelped out in pain as I saw him stare down at me disgustedly from the stairs. It was like a nightmare. I was immobilized from pain on the hard ground while this strange man was rising higher and higher until eventually disappearing into an Angel. All I could see was the Angel the dock and the ever so ominous darkening sky. My Kuo…please come back to me…

--

“Excuse me sir, have you seen my brother?” I asked some cop guy. He pushed me into a solitary seat and told me to buckle up for safety. I was so scared…I needed Kade…I needed him so bad…where are you, Kade?

--

I struggled to get up…

It was so hard…I limped a bit off to the side. I noticed something I hadn’t seen before, there was a sign reading ‘Mercury’ on the dock. Oh God I had to find another Mercury destined Angel!

I limped my tattered and torn self all the way to the next Angel, which hadn’t begun lifting off. There were only two others and one had begun launching already. I stood back and read the dock label of this one…’Jupiter’.

Why would they put Jupiter next to Mercury! Where are the other Mercury’s?

With one last hope, I turned around and headed the opposite direction. Everything was so large, gray, dusty, and desolate. It was the most frightening thing to know that I might get stuck here on this planet; alone forever only to be slowly devoured by whatever was on its way.

I could see the very faint letters of ‘Mars’ in the distant dock label.

I almost ripped myself to pieces. Kuo…

“Hey kid! Where ya tryin ta get to, eh?”

A boisterous, fat man called out to me smiling. Who would smile at a time like this?

“Me-Mercury.” I had to moisten my drying mouth.

With that, the blood Red Angel, the color of my hair, hoisted itself up into the air putting miles and miles between my beautiful brother and I…

I felt the overwhelming emotion rip me apart. My tears fell heavier than they ever had before. I hurt…so badly…emotionally and physically. This in itself should be a sin.

“I can help ya…”

Suddenly this man was a lot closer than he had been…I looked up as he said that.

“H-how?”

“I got a ship.”

“You have an Angel?” This man didn’t seem the type to own something so terrifyingly magnificent.

“Nah, I said I got a ship, not necessarily one a those heavenly objects, but I got one, and I can take ya ta Mercury...”

Too damn good to be true.

“What’s the catch?”

“What’s ya name, kid?”

“…It’s Kade.”

“Nice, nice, very nice name. It suits ya. Well, Kade, ya see…I got this problem. I’m what you would call a genius of sorts a scientific genius that is…please...come over to my car and we’ll be on our way. I think it’d be in our best interest to get out of here as soon a possible.”

I hesitated only momentarily as I began to lug my aching body toward his very nice car. I don’t think he ever noticed my limp…

“So, before I tell ya…tell me something… Why are ya tryin ta get to Mercury? Why not Jupiter?”

I’m not telling him about Kuo.

“My mother and father went to Mercury and I wasn’t allowed on the Angel.”

“Ha! Those damn snooty Angel bastards! Wouldn’t let ya in! Did ya tell him ya folks was on board?”

I somehow managed to get my seatbelt on underneath my broken left arm and I bit my lip as another wave of pain washed over me.

“Y-yes sir, I did.”

“That’s horrible, I know how ya feel. WELL, do you REALLY want to know what the catch is Kade?”

“Yes…”

“You have to be a part of my experiment...”

Suddenly his homely accented English was gone.

“What?” What the hell is happening to my life?

“I want you to be a part of my experiment on order to have a free ride to Mercury…what do you say about that, boy?”

“What are you going to do to me?”

“As I said before, I’m a genius and lately I’ve been working on a sort of…android project. Obviously I ran out of time with this disease, which I’m pretty sure isn’t a disease at all, running rampant through the world.”

“Android for what and how do you know it’s not a disease?”

“Well, I wanted to…help the world with my invention, but I haven’t had time to create all of the parts for it. You see, they are special ordered individual components, which require months of building and testing and repairing, it’s truly tedious. I need something to complete the body. And what’s more technologically correct than the human body, right? Right. I just need a subject to fuse some parts with…”

“What parts?” What is this man trying to do to me?

“A left arm and a right leg…”

“What?”

“Surely you heard me.”

That was too ironic for my tastes. My left arm was broken and my right ankle was twisted and it wasn’t getting any medical attention soon. Oh God was this meant to happen? God…is it you who I owe this too? My fate? Or is it the Raven whose bloodied claws I have befallen?

“I…I did. Why me, though? Were you just waiting for some random person you could scheme into using as a guinea pig?”

“Actually yes, but your hair struck me as odd. Its color seemed so perfect, so fit for my cause that I needed it.”

“What does my hair have to do with it?”

“Flame…it’s so perfect, it couldn’t have been more perfect! AHAHA!”

He laughed triumphantly then. It was frightening…it was perfectly insane.

“You never answered my question…”

“AH! Here we are, we must go quick! Get out get out, hurry!”

“Answer me! How did you kn-…?”

Holy shit.

“Holy shit.”

Ok…one more time…

“HOLY SHIT, WHAT IS THAT?”

“I call it the GOD bird. I designed it myself.”

Yeah that’s not arrogant at all. I guess it deserves arrogance. In front of me, an enormous dock and spaceship rose an innumerable amount of feet into the air.

“Where did that come from? I didn’t see it before, I mean SURELY that’s noticeable!”

“Cloaking device, come inside right away.”

He ushered me into an elevator where we waited for almost a minute for the damn thing to go up. It stopped.

The doors opened to reveal two men in white suit like outfits that kind of scared me.

I limped my way painfully behind this still nameless man as the two men stared at my hair with the same sort of glee I saw on this man’s face.

“Sir, his hair.”

“I KNOW, Johnson. Marvelous…”

Johnson…that’s a funny name.

I told him that I couldn’t walk any longer and he seemed to have expected this because there was a wheelchair trailing behind me within seconds complete with pretty nurse lady pusher…thing. I sat down and closed my eyes as my ankle throbbed.

I ignored the pain and thought of my Kuo. How I’m doing this for him. How I’m giving my body to science for a one-way ticket to a distant planet just to be with him again. I really do love him.

Oh God. I began thinking of all the lecherous perverts he might be on the ship with…what they might do to him when he sleeps, what he’ll do to survive when he gets to that wonderful blue planet on that Red Angel without me.

I felt something trying to be reassuring on my shoulder and I realized it was this man’s hand patting it as if he knew what I was thinking about.

“By the way, what’s your name?”

I looked as the room he took me into on this enormous ship began filling with people in white and two men lifted me out of my wheelchair onto an uncomfortable bed.

“Why, shame on me. I am Dr. Theodore Mor III.”

I felt some one begin to undress me. I panicked a bit and realized it was the most useless thing I’ve ever done in my life. I felt tears begin to roll down my cheeks as I thought of all the horrible outcomes of everything.

“Don’t worry, boy.”

He smiled at me and I looked directly into his eyes.

“He’ll be alright.”

I sure hope so…

Wait…how did you know…how did you-? I began to panic again and I was frightened. I was angry.

Those were the last real emotions I ever felt.
