"Hey ya'll! My names Jordan Leigh Ravens. I'm from northern Georgia. My family is kinda small an' that's 'bout all I can say about myself." That was how I introduced myself to a bunch of acne covered faces in Trinity Academy. Oh yes, there were many snickers about my strangely different accent and people were trying to pronounce "ya'll" right. I smiled sweetly at the crowd and took a seat in the back of the class, where I was more comfortable and keeping the confident smile on my face all the while.
Moving to England was my own personal little hell bubble. I had a hard time adjusting to people that I had known since pre-school, I was finding it near impossible to find adjust to people I had almost nothing in common with. These people used words that were most definitely NOT in my vocabulary….baggies and gear…and what in the world is a "wanker?" It was all new and I could hardly even understand a word that they were saying, yet, I kept my smile on. My mother said that confidence was key. Not wanting to start my new school out as a nerd, I tried to look sure of myself and confident, but on the inside, I was a nervous wreck.
I sat down at the desk in the back corner. I took out my binder and a pencil and started to doodle aimlessly. A square of paper landed on my desk. I looked up to see who could have thrown it, but everyone's head was turned around and staring at the teacher intently. I opened the note up and read it.
Could you say ya'll again? It's so terribly cute.
I looked up to see if any one was staring at me. A girl dressed in all black smiled at me from the desk directly in front of me. I replied with a simple "depends who's asking?" and folded it back and gave it to her. Her shoulders shook with silent laughter and turned around.
"Name's Emma Greenton. Nice to meet ya' Ms. Ravens." She said as her brown eyes smiled back at me. I shook the hand she offered me as the World History teacher, Mr. Norton handed out a course syllabus. I scanned it for a moment before realizing I had already done most of this. World history was going to be a easy class for me.
"Hey, Jordan. If you want to come and sit with us at lunch, you can. That is, if you haven't already promised the honor to someone else." Emma said with her regal accent.
"No, I don't have any where to sit, You could show me the ropes so I don't fall in with the wrong crowd." I said hoping I didn't sound too forward in wanting help or friends.
"Y-E-S! Yes! I'd love to show you around and warn you who to stay away from." She said like she was saving the school, one new lonely American kid at a time.
