Gasoline Cologne

They walk arm-in-arm.
Their words know no lies.
They dance in his car.
They kiss at stoplights.

Her eyes fill with tears
When he brushes her cheek.
They forget their fears
Of being lonely.

Months pass in bliss
And laughter and smiles,
Not knowing they’ll miss
What they’ve had all the while.

Their last day is the last
day he opens his eyes.
It is the last day
He is alive.

Now his smell lingers:
Gasoline cologne…
On her clothes, her fingers.
Reminding: She’s alone.

As days pass, she tries
to bring life to her eyes.
As her laughs turn to cries,
Her heart shatters inside.
