Happily Never After
-
And she spends all her time kissing boys
On the corner of Ever After Road.
She’s looking for her prince, you see,
But all she’s found are toads.
-x-
Her dress disappearing as the clock strikes twelve,
She’ll spend the night with any (not so) Charming;
Making creases in the royal bed sheets because
She’s oh so desperate for a happy ending.
-x-
But come every morning after
Her glass slippers are shattered along with her heart
When she realizes her fleeting fairy tale
Was just a Happily Never After from the start.
-x-
Hopelessly (romantic), she scampers back home
To where the cinders know her name.
They tell her she’s too old for make-believe
But it’s the only way to make her forget the pain.
-x-
And oh mirror, mirror on the wall,
She cringes at her pallid-faced reality.
What’s seven more years of bad luck
When grim(m) closings are already a normality?
-x-
They say, “if the slipper fits, fall in love”,
And she wasn't one for something small.
She threw herself from the tallest tower
And her happy ending didn’t survive the fall.
-x-
With poisoned-apple eyes
And bloodied, tattered wrists,
She’s a damsel in distress, but
She won’t (can’t) be saved by any prince’s kiss.
-x-
