Understand

The tide is gripping, pulling, grasping,

in the distance I can hear you laughing.

I kick and push the water away,

& try to keep the pain at bay.

Beneath my feet is soft white sand,

not long ago, I was safe on land.

You left me here in this dark blue sea,

and said, “you’ll understand eventually.”

I’m riding the notes of a symphony,

my broken heart beats in harmony.

You keep crooked time inside my head,

but I still hang on every word you said.

Your music is all that I can hear,

and the crescendo is drawing near.

& I’m lost inside the sound of you,

this love was all I ever knew.

I’m running blindly through driving rain,

when at last, I surrender to the pain.

It’s crushing, tearing, killing me…

this isn’t who I wanted to be.

I never thought I’d break this way.

As I watch the stars become the day,

I’m losing myself in the brilliant ache.

I understand: you were a mistake.
