Chapter 1:

A Start

Azusa Museum was hectic and crazy. Emily was sitting in her office, waiting for her lovely niece to arrive. Her niece, Rory, would be interning this summer at the museum. Emily was eagerly awaiting her. Rory was bringing her friend Lucy Wallace. She simply couldn’t wait.

Rory and Lucy sprinted up the 20 stairs to the door of the Museum. They we’re just barely on time for work. Their plane had been delayed, so they had barely anytime to prepare for work. Their luggage was still in the trunk of their rental car. They hurried into the museum and proceeded to the reference desk.

“Excuse me, can you tell me where I can find Mrs. Emily Peirce?”asked Rory.

“Yes, she’s in the back in her office. I’ll page her for you.”

“ Thank you.”

Rory walked over to Lucy who was looking at the brochures.

“She’s going to page my aunt.”

“Okay, great.”

A woman in an all gray pant suit walked up from around the corner and Rory embraced her in a hug.

“Oh, Aunt Emily. I haven’t seen you in ages.”said Rory

“I know dear. I missed you so much.”said Emily

“Me too.”

“Oh, you must be Lucy Wallace.” Emily said as she pointed towards Lucy.

“Yes, pleasure to meet you. I have heard so much about you. I’ve even read your book, Gems, Gems, Gems. It was great,” said Lucy, exited to meet Emily at last.

“ Rory has told me so much about you.”

“As Rory has of you. I have heard nothing but stories about you Mrs. Pierce” said Lucy, happy to finally meet the woman Rory so lovingly cared for and praised.

“Well, I think we should get you two started. Follow me” said Emily.

“Okay,” the two girls agreed in unison.

Emily showed the two girls around the museum, and told them all about their duties. She told them that they were to begin their training with one of Emily’s trusted employees, Kim Baver.

“Here’s Kim” said Emily, pointing to Kim from across the room. Kim rushed over.

“Hi, I’m Kim Baver. I will be training you for a week, and then you’ll be doing all of this stuff on your own” greeted Baver as she shook both of the girl’s hands. “Well, lets get started!” she said, eager to get done training them.

“Okay, let’s go!” said Rory, just as excited as a child with chocolate.

Lucy loved gems. She had loved gems since she was a young child. She had always been fascinated with them. She could never figure out why. They simply intrigued her. Something about them caught her attention. As they moved through that tour earlier, she wasn’t really listening to Emily. She was focused upon the vast gems throughout the museum. She would be honored to work in the museum run by Emily Pierce! She had loved her work. Absolutely cherished it. She had read her book, Gems, Gems, Gems , dozens of times. Gem’s were just her thing. She liked to think of it like the song, “Diamond’s are a girl’s best friend”.

Rory wasn’t really a “gem person”. She didn’t really like them all that much. However, the intern job was something for her to do over the summer, so she decided to take it. Rory was an adventurous girl. She always had to be on the move. Always trying to explore every nook and cranny of the world. Adventure and action were her specialities. It was like she belonged in an Indiana Jones movie. That sort of action and adventure. This was odd, because Rory and Lucy were very close, and Lucy hated adventures. Lucy would rather stay at home, and relax on a couch or in the kitchen, than going out on an adventure any day. Rory had an addiction to adventure, unfortunately for Lucy. But, Lucy knew that’s just how Rory was, and often let it go.
