"Who are you?" he would ask.
She would never answer. He knows that. But tonight is different. He can feel it. He asks again.
"Who are you?" he asks, this time more forcefully. He can see the girl twitch though she isn't facing him. He feels guilty and mentally berates himself.
But still, she doesn't answer. He tries a different tactic.
"Why are you here?" He asks softly, trying to make his voice gentle. Why does it sound like stone? He hesitates, before asking another question. "Why do you haunt my dreams?"
Time freezes. The girl is as still as a statue, and suddenly he can't breathe.
Aqua, green, orchid, fire, gold...the sky starts to overwhelm him. He sees swirls of color.
The sky is falling.
Strong winds start to go against him, making him fight to keep his eyes open. There is a rush in his ears, an overpowering wave of sound blocking anything he might have heard. He feels Morpheus leaving...
"No!! Stay!!" He yells desperately, trying to run towards the girl. But the wind blocks his...his...past? No, he meant path...right?
He will not stop. He struggles against the gales of power, and with one last cry, he asks her again.
"Who are you?!"
Nothing. Everything has stopped. Once again, Time stands still. Then, suddenly, she's right in front of him, her eyes boring into his.
Black.
Then, her lips form a soundless word.
He's gone. He's not going to forget her eyes.
Black onyx eyes.
He looks up, surprised. A wry smile light her face like a fox. He's honestly scared of her now.
"Y-you speak!!"
She laughs at his dumbfounded look. It doesn't sound happy. It's amused, evil...sadistic.
Today they are sitting by a tree, an apple tree. The girl is leaning against it almost lazily but her position is slightly defensive. Grasslands stretch beyond vision, cloudy skies spread protectively above.
"No, I'm actually a voice in your head. You're a schizophrenic. In fact, the girl who's in front of you is just an illusion."
He wonders. Is he really? It would make sense...
He ponders this until he hears a quiet snickering. He snaps his head to the girl to see her chuckling.
"You..are...so...gullible!" She manages between her laughs. He feels himself heat up.
"Hey--!" He starts out in protest. He tries to think of a good comeback but the girl suddenly stops laughing. Her breathing is normal. She picks up a pear and starts eating it.
He looks up at the tree. There are only apples. He stares at it suspiciously. He is suddenly reminded of the tale of Adam and Eve.
"Where'd you get that pear?" He asks. She stops eating, and turns to stare at him.
Five seconds pass.
She goes back to eating, a smile apparent on her lips. She pauses for a moment.
"Your ears are red."
The cycle repeats.
"You know, it's improper to ask for someone's name without giving yours first." she says, side-stepping his question before he asks it.
He didn't tell her his name? Yes he did...not. He feels dumb.
"Oh."
She looks up from her book, an eyebrow raised.
"Oh--yeah, It's Rhine."
She gets a thoughtful look upon her face.
"Rhine...as in...Rhihito?" She pauses and talks on before he can confirm her suspicion. "Nah...probably short for Rhinestone."
She snickers.
He decides to not say anything. He sits down and opens a book near him, hoping it's interesting
10 minutes pass. He finds himself engrossed in his book, when she interrupts him.
"Aurora."
He looks up and sees nothing but the ceiling of an old library. He doesn't even have to voice his confusion. Even so, she rolls her eyes, as if she knows what's going on in her head. Maybe she does.
"My name is Aurora."
A pause.
"Oh."
Aurora. It plays an odd chord in his head. Auroara...Aurrora...Aurorah...Aurora?
He's stuck in his thoughts, and doesn't notice the girl leaning over the table until it's too late. Punishment. He is smacked with a pencil.
"Idiot. It's pronounced Aura-rah. Remember."
He does.
She swims to him, her mermaid tail curled in irritation. She does not like having her swim interrupted.
"What is it now?" She says. He shakes his head and points upward.
"No, look. It's an aurora." He breathes out, clearly amazed by the sight above him. He finds it funny how the real aurora contrasts so much with the fair, black-haired girl next to him, yet it is so alike.
"I'm going to remember this forever." She says.
"I'm not going to forget." He agrees.
He goes outside to walk. The human world...it feels so real, but not at all.
He lets his legs take him to wherever they go. Follow the wind.
Somehow, he finds himself at the beach. Though it's empty, he feels comfortable. This is where he belongs.
Not caring that he will get wet, he goes into the ocean, letting it's chill become one with his body. It feels like a mother's embrace.
Step by step, he walks into the sea, the cold of the water disappearing with each stride. Come to me, it's calling.
Before he knows it, he is completely immersed. Yet he doesn't panic.
Remember. Remember, he hears Aurora say from his memory. Remember.
And he does.
