Where I’m From

I’m from the nighttime

When the deafening silence wraps around you

And all you can see is the blue glow of the television

As you’re lulled to sleep by a downpour of rain

I’m from the dreams that beckon

The promise they hold to take me away

From this place that I’ve already figured out

To somewhere that’s dark and full of secrets

I’m from the nightmares that come and take over

With dreams so vivid and real, they wake me

And all I can remember are Daddy’s strong hands

Rocking me back into slumber

But I’m also from the morning dawn

When birds sing and trees shake out their leaves

And the smell of brewing coffee drifts from the kitchen

As the sound of the toilet flushing fills the house

I’m from a family of love and warmth

Whose hands guide me from sleep

The dreams – good and bad – have faded from memory

And I’m suddenly back again where I belong.
