Overdramatic

“Why don’t you just come right out and say what you really mean. ‘I’ll miss you.’ That’s what you are thinking.”

I refused to look him in the eye. “Because.”

“Because why?” he went on, ignoring the harsh December wind that swept over the small hill we stood on.

“Because…” I choked. “It’s too hard.”

There was silence. I could feel his eyes softening as I heard him back away.

“And saying ‘I miss you’ is too much like saying goodbye,” I murmured, looking back at him. I sighed quietly. “And I don’t want to say goodbye to a friend like you.”

He did not reply for a moment, but he finally said with a smile on his face, “You’re too overdramatic. I hope you know that.”

I smiled. “Yeah. I know.”

From the moment he said he wasn’t coming back, I missed him. I missed the way his smile lit up the room and how he laughed, but sparingly. I only wish that I knew how little time we had together, so that maybe I wouldn’t have taken it for granted…

I guess it wouldn’t make a difference.
