On that night something was made,

A bond so strong no amount of evil could break it,

On that night when so much was lost,

And yet so much was found.

Those scenes not intended for a child’s eyes,

Now imprinted upon my memory,

A never fading picture,

A reminder of things that will never be.

Dad always used to come home drunk,

Forever ready to fight the world,

But mom was always in the firing line,

The bruises, to her a map of love.

I’ll always remember her crying,

Silently as she hid another scar,

And dad was always sorry,

And promising to change.

But some things don’t change,

That night when dad came home,

When Mother feared for her life,

The night she picked up the carving knife.

And she got her revenge,

For all the pain and the hurt he caused,

But revenge is a two-way game,

That night cost her dearly.

One life is paid for by another,

And tonight there is one more angel in heaven,

But that night also brought two people together,

And tied them for ever more.

As we huddled together in the rain,

My tears flowed into his,

A river joining us in our sorrow,

Until night fell and hid the darkness.

Hid from us those scenes of death,

Wrapped us in the darkness,

Kept us safe, kept us together,

Linked in the night by our loss.

On that night something was made,

A bond so strong no amount of evil could break it,

On that night when so much was lost,

And yet so much was found.
