Ode to the Broken Ones

Ode to each of you.

For the warmth you sent out

That was met with frigidity.

For the embraces

You wished would linger longer.

The thankless task of loving

A lover who does not

Return the favor

Could go on forever

And ever at least

Until a broken heart

Ceases to fill.

At long last

When the final wisp of air

Passes through an ex-lover’s

Dry, chapped, and bleeding lips

And he says

“I have always loved you;

Forever will never end for us.”

The awakening occurs:

If love was easy,

It wouldn’t be special.

Ode to the Broken Ones

You grappled for hope

You fought away demons

You struggled through despair

But still,

You are indeed the ones left in pieces

To remember a time when things were easy.

Were they ever?

Let’s remember

What is Owed to the Broken Ones.
