Making it Possible
Part I
Water. Fire. Earth. Wind. They all corresponded to one another in some way. Water fed the Earth, allowing it to give life. Fire, allied with Wind, became fierce and strong. Water could drown Fire, eliminating it, and Wind could erode the Earth’s strong land. Despite their similarities, they allied only with those they were equal with. Water was equal with Earth and Fire was equal with Wind. This was the way of life that the Element-Demon Mages lived. It never changed.
Luna, a solemn Water-Demon Mage, was one of the strongest of her Element. She could destroy anything in her path if she wished it. However, she used her powers for more good than evil. She had, once, taken a lover that was an Earth-Demon Mage. He was gentle towards her, but could not handle how powerful she was. She never used her magic on him, but he did not like the acknowledgement, so he fled from her, leaving Luna to live by herself in a manor on a cliff by the ocean. For Luna, the magic of the Elements, of Water, was her life. There was no changing that...Well, there hadn’t been at first.
A few hundred years after her Earth-Demon Mage left her, Luna had left the safe haven of her manor to wander the beach. Her white blonde hair fluttered in the wind as she traveled along the coast, her azure eyes looking out to the waters, feeling a low hum being murmured from them. The ocean’s water sang to her as she sometimes did at night. A sudden frown came to her lips and her eyes narrowed, spotting something in the far distance. She raised a hand and the waters raised as well. Water spun around the thing – which she was quite certain wasn’t an animal – before fluttering to her, settling on the sand, gently dropping the figure. She returned the water to the ocean, thanking it silently. Her cerulean and lavender robes fluttered as she moved briskly to the young child that clung to a board. Luna grabbed him carefully and saw that he was trying to remain awake. She saw the pendant around his neck and almost snarled in irritation. The young boy is that of a Fire-Demon clan. Hmm...He is injured, though, and probably knows no better. The waters tortured him because of what he is. Luna brought him in her arms, moving from the edge of the ocean toward her manor, her eyes frosty. She was going against everything, but sometimes children suffered for what their elders did...

A soft moan issued from Mikau’s lips and his dark emerald eyes slid open. He slowly blinked, taking in his surroundings. He was in a large bedroom that had some strange characters on the walls. Hues of blue, purple, and light green came to his eyes, covering the entire room. He glanced down to see he had been dressed in a long shirt and his tunic was gone. His pendant still was there. He stood up, dragging himself to what he believed was the bathroom. He smoothed his hand over his wild auburn hair that seemed red more than anything. His jade eyes had specks of red in it, detecting him as a Fire-Demon. He hoisted himself onto the counter, his sharp nails digging in the fine marble.
For Fire-Demons, they had long, pointed ears that protruded from their head, small fangs, and long nails that were used as claws. Earth-Demons appeared much more human except the women’s hair could be a dark green and their skin was tinted a light green, as well. Other than that, they looked quite normal. Wind-Demons were thin and wispy, their hair blonde and their bodies lithe, able to bend like the wind. They were cheerful, but mischievous, and were almost completely harmless. The Water-Demons could sometimes be the most deadly. They were much like Fire-Demons. They had human-like ears, though they were pointed, and their claws were much deadlier than a Fire-Demons when unsheathed. When they wished to, they could strike you with their claws and pump venom into your system. Their fangs were much longer and deadlier and their tongues were a bit forked. Most Water-Demons had slanted eyes, pale skin, pale hair, and pale eyes. Some were lucky to look a bit more normal.
As for Mikau, he hadn’t yet developed his physique. His claws still weren’t that long, nor were his ears or fangs.
“I see you have woken up,” a silky, but cold voice announced softly. He jerked around, alert and saw a beautiful female standing in the doorway in long robes. Her long white-blonde hair when to her waist and some lay on her shoulders. She raised her hand and his pendant lifted slightly. He knew then that she was not a human, but some kind of Element-Demon Mage. He knew too late what she was. Her pale appearance and cool demeanor told him everything.
“How dare you,” he hissed, catching his pendant as it fell, her hand as well. “How dare you assist me! I want nothing to do with you Water-Demons!” No matter how beautiful, he added to himself. Her eyes darkened and in one, deep stride, she was in front of him, holding him by the collar of the nightclothes she had given him.
“I do not appreciate you treating me as you are. I saved your life. Don’t forget that.” She dropped him and turned her back on him, gliding into the room with the grace only a Water-Demon such as herself could perfect. Mikau hesitantly followed her, wariness overcoming any other instinct. His heart was drumming in his chest as he watched her every movement. He analyzed her, carefully probing her with the little power he possessed. She was powerful. Extremely. She was perhaps even one of the Elders, but somehow that didn’t seem possible.
“Who are you?” He asked quietly at last. She perched on a stool, fixing him with a hard stare. “Your power...It surpasses anyone’s that I’ve ever known!”
“My name is Luna. I know what you are thinking, little one, and I am not an Elder. My power has not exceeded that much, nor has my small amount of years.” She raised her hand and a glass hovered to him, water gliding through the air from the pitcher to his cup. “Drink.” He did so, knowing better now than to provoke her. He lowered his eyes from her, feeling energy swell within him. “You should be thankful I am so giving to children. Though you are a Fire-Demon, my enemy, you are still a child and I care dearly for the young ones.”
“I am not young!” He protested indignantly. She met his gaze unwaveringly and he grimaced. “Maybe a little bit.”
“What is your name?”
“Mikau,” he answered instantly. “I come from the Northern Fire-Demon clan in the mountains.” Mikau hesitated and then asked, “Where do you come from?”
“A land that no one knows of, nor where one who is not of them can enter.” Unscrambling her words, Mikau nodded in understanding to her. Luna turned her face from him, her eyes moving to the window. Taking the chance, he gazed at her features and then slid his eyes to her hands. The tips of her fingers were sharp, but he knew that they were drawn in.
“Do you not have a mate?” He questioned hesitantly, not wishing to offend her. The Water-Demon returned her attention to him, pinning him with her cold gaze.
“No,” she replied. “Unlike you Fire-Demons, we are not very sensual creatures. It is one of the very reasons that I am without a mate.” She stood and moved towards the door, her skirts fluttering around her legs. She paused, turning to him with those pale, cool eyes and one of her smooth brows lifted. “Come, Mikau. While you are with me, you may work off your debt.”
“My debt?” He repeated blankly. She frowned at his idiocy and he remembered her saving his life and continued hastily, “Um, right. Okay.” He followed her out of the room and gazed at her manor with interest. It was carefully taken care of and very clean. “What would you like me to do? It seems that everything’s taken care of well enough in the home.” Luna’s lips tilted upward in a sardonic smile before she paused at the bottom of the steps.
“You will be helping me cook tonight. Tomorrow, you will clean outside.” His jaw dropped a bit in surprise. By that smile on her face, he was guessing that the outside was not a place that was cleaned often. “I have no servants and my garden hasn’t been kept. Along with that, the beach is littered with seaweed and other things that the stupid humans leave lying around. And then when that’s finished, you can fix my yard, which has various things littered in it. When that’s all done, you may leave.”
“That could take months!” He protested and the Water-Demon shrugged her small shoulders in response. He sighed, surrendering to her will. She was right to give him work to do. Nothing could add up to a life. When thinking of it like that, Mikau decided it wasn’t that many chores, all in all.
“Now come help me prepare dinner,” she ordered, sweeping away with her usual grace to the kitchen. With a small little sigh, he followed to do his part.
That night, after he had eaten a rather good dinner, and had bathed, he lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling. Luna had told him she didn’t care what time he went to sleep, so long as he didn’t wake her up if he stayed up after her. He could only image what wrath she would inflict upon him if he woke her up. Turning on his side, Mikau considered that he was actually lucky to have been found by this particular Water-Demon. Though Luna was very cold, demanding, and powerful, he knew that beneath that icy exterior, she had a heart that beat just as any other creature’s did. It just took awhile of searching to find it. I was taught, Mikau thought to himself, that Water-Demons kill without any thought of who or what it is, that they are harsh creatures and not to be trusted, but I think that might be wrong. Luna doesn’t seem that way at all. She’s really concerned about my health. He recalled her saying after dinner that she would put him to work outside with easy tasks tomorrow a bit after he woke up. As she said, she didn’t want him over exhilarating himself since he was still recovering. Because of that subtle worry she had revealed, he began to feel less ill towards her. I can’t help but like her, he admitted to himself, closing his eyes. Besides, she’s really pretty.

Luna heard footsteps upstairs and guessed that Mikau had woken up. Her dress floated around her legs as she moved in brisk steps to the bottom of the stairs. Her blue dress cut off at her knee, revealing her pale, smooth legs. The top of her dress cut in a half-circle, revealing a modest amount of her petite bosom. Her eyes narrowed on Mikau, who was buttoning the last of his tunic. “Come down here,” she ordered and he obeyed, clomping downstairs. His head came to a bit above her waist, as she was shorter than other Water-Demons. “On my territory, you can’t allow your pendant to be shown,” she informed him, tucking it in his tunic.
“What does it matter if they will be able to sense me?” He asked, walking beside her into the kitchen where breakfast was set out.
“My power drowns yours out. The ocean’s water has power that covers yours up. While in my territory, you are safe from unsuspecting Water-Demons that might visit. Though your tunic might be a dead giveaway...” She eyed his black and dark red tunic, which signified he was still in training. A completely black one meant he was a master and a completely red one meant he was a novice. As he had the training tunic on and the Water-Demons were well educated about their enemies, even without the pendant, they might suspect. “You will have to go into town to buy something new.”
“You’re not coming?” Mikau queried as she gave him a pouch of coins.
“...You have a point. No one can trust a child with money.” She glided upstairs and returned with a violet cloak around her and ankle-high blue soft boots on. “Come.” She handed him a cloak and he took it, clasping it at the throat and hurrying after her outside. “I don’t put animals into labor, so we’ll be walking.”
“You mean you don’t have horses,” he translated more for his own benefit.
“Yes.”
“...Aren’t tunics expensive?” She sent him a dryly-amused look.
“That pouch alone could be traded in for maybe the price one hundred tunics,” she pointed out to him. “The coins in the pouch could buy a couple tunics and have money left over. We will have enough.”
“Oh...Um, right.”
They arrived in town, which was only a short walk from her manor by the beach, where it was hustling with merchants and excited townspeople and villagers. Mikau had never been outside of the mountains and gazed at the humans with something alight to wonder. Luna pulled his hood over his head so it covered his ears as she did the same thing. He almost lost her in the crowds as she briskly moved forward. Mikau could see her heading towards a jolly merchant and saw that he didn’t sell clothing, but fruit. The merchant looked up and his eyes widened at Luna, his mouth working convulsively. “Hello,” Luna greeted pleasantly in a voice that was not her own. Mikau could tell it was meant to charm the man. “Could you please tell us where a clothing store is located?”
“A-a clothing story, ma’am?” He sputtered, blinking rapidly. She nodded. “Um...” He looked around and then asked, “For yourself or your son?”
“For my son,” she affirmed, even though they looked nothing alike.
“Well, there’s one just down Pines Street. It’s large and...and there is clothing in the window. You can’t miss it.”
“Thank you.” Luna grabbed Mikau by the cuff of his neck when he stood staring at the man in puzzlement and shoved him forward roughly. He grunted in pain as her sharp nails dug in the flesh of his neck. “Don’t look so awestruck, Mikau. These humans are wiser than they look. They might question you.”
“I’ve never seen so many humans in one place,” he told her, ignoring her scolding. “That man was bemused by you. Why?”
“Because human men’s hormones are more active and unrestrained than one might assume,” Luna grumbled darkly. She had had bad encounters with human men when she came in town and had always had problems with her own kind when she was forced to protect herself. They all ended up dead in the end and those who saw had to be taken care of quickly or their minds had to be erased of the moment. Either way, the Elders of the Water-Demons had advised for her to avoid being around human men and she had. She only came to town when she absolutely needed it and she only charmed the human men she knew were harmless.
“That must be it,” Mikau said when they had gone halfway down Pines Street. He pointed at a tall store by a bakery and a bank that was even larger than the clothing store. He opened the door, holding it open for her politely. Mikau closed it and followed her up to the woman at the desk. She had blonde curls and a bright face that was covered with cosmetics. Demons never understood what it was with human women and cosmetics.
“Hello!” The woman chirped happily. “What can I help you with?”
“He needs a tunic,” Luna explained briefly.
“What kind would you like?”
“One that is simple and blue.”
“I don’t like blue,” Mikau whispered to Luna.
“I don’t care if you don’t like the skin you’re in,” she retorted just as quietly. He sulked, then when he saw the cloth that his tunic was being made of, his face lit up. It was soft, almost as soft as silk, and glimmered a bit.
“Let’s get your measurements, sweetheart,” the woman said and measured him. “Okay, we can have it ready by tomorrow.”
“No,” Luna said bluntly. “I need it ready by today. Now.”
“But we can’t possibly – ” She stopped speaking when Luna dumped a generous amount of money in her hand. “Th-that’s...”
“Twice as much as I should be paying.”
“...Well, I suppose...” Luna’s lips curled upward.
“Excellent.”
About an hour later of Mikau standing and complaining – with Luna glaring at him to shut up – they had the tunic ready. Luna ordered him to change into it and dump his old one in the box the woman had given them for his new one. He came out of the dressing room with the new one on and she scrutinized him carefully. “It will have to do,” she decided and fixed the hood of his cloak, arranging it over his ears. “I’m sick of the stench of humans, so let’s be on our way.” He nodded, his own face twisted in a sour expression. His nostrils felt as though they were bleeding from the smell of humans. He was wishing that he couldn’t smell at all.
On their way down Pines Street, an older male knocked Luna into Mikau. “Oh! I’m sorry,” he apologized, seeing that Mikau was on the ground. Luna heaved him up by the arm. Luna frowned at him and he got a glimpse of her face. “Oh...” He gently took her hand as she pushed off from the wall she had been knocked into. “I do apologize most sincerely, ma’am.” Mikau looked confused as he watched the way the man stared at her. He didn’t understand much about sexual attraction except that when two liked each other, they were called mates, and that children came from some kind of interaction between the two. He still didn’t get it completely.
“It’s fine,” Luna answered him carefully.
“Please. Allow me to take you out and – ”
“No, I must be going.” She took Mikau’s shoulder firmly and tried to get away, but the man persisted, stepping in front of them. Mikau could feel a slight tremor go through her as she backed away from the man, pressing Mikau against her.
“I insist,” the man said, smiling benignly, an odd glint in his eyes that Mikau didn’t trust.
“No,” Luna repeated, this time in a harsher tone. The man’s smile dropped and he grasped her arm. “No!” She shoved against him and a struggle ensued, causing Mikau to be knocked to the ground again. He had no idea what to do and licked his lips. He didn’t know much magic and was afraid that Luna would get mad if he performed any. “Mikau, go!” She snapped at him. “Go back to my manor if you can!” For the first time, he saw her cold mask break and desperation came on her face. A soft glow started on her fingertips and he knew she was about to perform magic.
Wait! He thought. If she does that and the human is harmed, then the Water-Demon’s Elders might come and since the town isn’t her territory, they’ll know I’m a Fire-Demon. “O-okay,” he hastily said and ran from the scene.
“How nice,” the man growled to Luna and slammed her against the wall, her head banging hard on the stone. Her spell forgotten, her mind whirled at the pain. “You got rid of the boy so we could be together.”
“Get – off – me!” She hissed, her eyes firing up.
“Excuse me,” a smooth voice came and both jerked to see an elegant male in dark blue cloak. He smiled pleasantly and questioned, “You’re not causing any harm to my sister, are you?” There was a dark, warning undertone to his voice and the man quickly brought himself from Luna.
“N-no!” He sputtered. “Of course I’m not! If you’ll excuse me.” He hurried away and Luna turned to the man, startled.
“Don’t worry, I’m your friend,” he assured her, moving his cloak to flash his Element pendant, which contained a blue mist. “I’m simply from a different region. Are you okay? He didn’t do anything to you, did he?”
“No,” she replied, frowning at him. “Why are you here if you’re from a different region?”
“The Elders sent me,” he answered with a shrug. “I’m looking for a local Water-Demon named Luna. Do you know her?”
“That would be me. What do you want?” He raised his eyebrow at her tone, but dismissed it. Her hands were still shaking slightly, so he didn’t blame her for her roughness.
“They wish to warn you.” He frowned and added, “You can feel it, can’t you? A Fire-Demon is nearby. Apparently, at the time that you exited your territory, the Fire-Demon was very close to you. It’s a weak one, but they believe it to be following you.”
“I see.” They have already discovered Mikau. They are watching me carefully, though. “You got here quickly.”
“They demanded it.”
“...Well. Thank you for your warning, but I already knew of it. I doubt that a weak Fire-Demon will cause me any trouble.”
“I would be cautious, even so, Sister,” he warned. “Problems may arise if others come.”
“I will be careful, now leave. There is no reason for you to be here any longer.” She turned to leave and he spoke up.
“The humans should not frighten you so,” he remarked and she turned to see his eyes glinting in curiosity.
“Keep out of my business, Brother. I will not hesitate to turn against you if you press into matters that do not concern you.”
“I am certain that you wouldn’t.” At that, he turned, saying, “My name is Aryl. Don’t forget it.” Her eyes narrowed on him as he sauntered down the street. She hurried away, hoping that Mikau was safe. She violently stroked the area with her powers, searching for any other Water-Demons. She only came up with Aryl. She passed over Mikau, whose powers gave a squawk of protest. She softened her touch and passed over Mikau again, an assuring touch, which he hesitantly returned, unsure. She sighed in relief, knowing he was near the manor. She fled from the town and found Mikau outside of the manor, waiting for her.
“Luna!” He exclaimed, rushing over to her. “Did something happen? Why were you fighting with that mortal man? Are you okay?”
“Enough of the questions,” Luna told him, waving a hand at him to stop. “It was nothing. I’m fine. We need to get you to work.” He looked uncertain, but nodded. She sent him away to start cleaning the beach up while she rested. The beach was small, starting from a cliff that could be seen clearly from the manor and then stopping at the large cliff her manor rested on. After Luna had spotted Mikau on the beach, she went to her room and removed her cloak, settling on the large bed. She sighed, running a hand through her white blonde hair wearily. I should have told Mikau to go by himself, Luna said to herself angrily. Why did I go to the town, expecting something like that to happen? Her brow furrowed even more. The Elders are watching this place. They won’t find much, though. There is only myself and Kari, the gentle Earth-Demon woman that controls the land east of my own. They must be expecting something though...But what? I will have to contact them once Mikau has left. Luna’s eyes slid closed and a lasting sigh escaped her lips as she fell into a slumber.
