Chapter 2
Christian plopped to the ground after bringing her last box into her room. She examined her room. It was bigger than her old bedroom, much bigger. She even had her own bathroom now. Christian was worn out from all the flying her family did this week. From lame-ass Georgia to beautiful California. Christian always wanted to live in California.
“Christian, dinner time!” called out Mrs. Mathis. Christian sighed.
“Finally got everything into my room, my legs are about to break off, I can’t breathe, and now I have to get back up to go eat…” she mumbled. Christian was thinking about just laying in her room until someone came and got her but knowing her family, they put her plate in the microwave and not bother to come get her until they were done eating. Besides, this young girl couldn’t resist a hot meal. She gradually got on her feet and made her way downstairs.

“Oh look, new neighbors!” cheered Ellie as she peaked out the window at the large moving truck parking in the driveway across the street. Valerie twirled around in her chair to face the window.
“Is it a big family? Are they black, white, Asian, Hispanic? Come on, we need details,” said Valerie. Alex moved towards the window.
“I see one guy moving back and forth from the house and the truck. He’s black. The truck is large so either their family is large or they’ve come from very far away. Oh, wait, I see a girl!” Alex pressed against the window. Valerie jumped out her chair and rushed over to peer through the window as well.
The girl looked lighter than the guy and she was shorter than him. The girl’s hair was pretty long and she appeared to have bangs. She was wearing black pants and a green hooded jacket.
“They can’t be fully black. That girl’s hair is too long…” whispered Ellie. Valerie smacked Ellie in the back of her head. Ellie whimpered in pain.
“Ellie, you’re so stupid! Black people can have long hair. They just have to take more care of their hair than others. Gosh, so insensitive…” Valerie spat back at the upset redhead. Alex covered her mouth, trying to hide the snickers behind it. Ellie squeezed between the two girls and went back to playing Fatal Frame. Valerie went back to reading a new yaoi manga she received in the mail from her cousin in Japan, and Alex continued watching Ellie speed through the game like a professional.

“I really need to get home you guys!” exclaimed Elliot from behind Leon and Patrick as they skated down the street. “Dinner started an hour ago!”
“Yeah, yeah…” mumbled Leon, waving his hand at his friend. Patrick made zigzags in his path as he nodded to the beat on his iPod. They headed towards the Gonzales-Cuaves residence, just over the hill that Valerie lived on.
“Look, new victims…” snickered Leon, skidding to a halt on his skateboard. Patrick gaped at the enormous moving van in the driveway. Elliot stopped after rolling past Leon. A young girl came out the house, hopping down a few steps. She spotted the guys across who waved at her. The girl made a face that the guys couldn’t make out, but waved back shyly. She was wearing green and black and sporting black Converses, giving off an impression that she was into some kind of rock music. The girl opened the van’s passenger door and leaned over the seat to grab something.
From a distance, the guys couldn’t decide whether she was mixed, Hispanic, or black with a light complexion. Leon wanted to move closer, to talk to the girl. She looked about their age.
“Dude, I don’t think you should worry. By the looks of it, she won’t be leaving for a while.” Elliot waved good-bye and skated on home. Leon and Patrick went on their way home too.
