Dance with the Devil
Excuses run rampant in my mind,
“You were late, I was lonely,”
I’m so terrified I can hardly breathe,
Bile is a seesaw in my throat,
Up and down, up and down,
The cold knot of fear clenches in my abdomen,
What will I do? Where will I hide?
I have given into temptation,
Just as Eve and the Apple,
The consequences will be just as dire,
Now I face the challenge of Him,
Not God, yet at least,
But the man I had exchanged vows with,
I shift downward in my pickup truck,
It is now I realize my shivers are nearing convulsions,
Tears are leaking out of the corners of my eyes,
I can feel the red A burned into my heart for eternity,
Just as Hester in the Scarlet Letter,
The rain beats down and I can barely see through the windshield,
The wipers are going full force,
Panic creeps through the fog in my mind,
How can I tell Him I slept with his friend?
If God had any mercy He’d strike me dead here and now,
For I have Danced with the Devil.
