Her thoughts

Samantha, or Sam as her friends called her, woke up with a start. Glancing at her digital clock on her mantelpiece she saw that it was 1.25 in the morning. She looked over to the window where moonlight was seeping into the room through the partly closed curtains. she thought she saw his image for a split second and her heart jumped with joy, but the, she realised it was only her imagination.

Sam stood up realising it was mow futile to try and go to sleep again. her thoughts were filled with his image, her memories of him, Luke. She had just dreamt he was there, with her, again. A tear slipped down her cheek. Why did he have to go out with his friends last Saturday? Nothing would have happened to him if he stayed inside and watched a DVD with her as she had suggested. She would miss the embraces and his gentle kisses on her cheek before he went to bed.

Now he was … gone! She almost couldn’t bring herself to say that word. Just half a week ago, he was here, in this room, in this house, telling her that he was going out and that he would be back by midnight. Only, he didn’t come back by midnight. She was just going o phone the police, when the phone rang.

Sam picked it up at once, fearing the worst, and she could only gasp in shock at the news she received. Luke was … dead. He was just coming back with his friends when a drunken lorry driver ran a red light and crashed into them. Nothing could be done to save Luke; he passed away only two hours after arriving at the hospital.

“But why did this have to happen to him?” She asked in vain. “Why?” There was only silence … no reply. As she stared out of the window she could see his face, his smiling mouth, his sparkling blue eyes. Why him? She thought time and time again. Aren’t there enough bad people in this world? Couldn’t you have taken one of them instead of him?

Tears were streaming down her face now. She couldn’t hold them back anymore. She could still hear the last words he said to her before leaving, before going out into that unfortunate night. She could almost feel his lips on her cheek and his eyes looking at her and smiling. He had told her “I love you Mum”. Those were his last words and she couldn’t forget them. She couldn’t bring herself to let him go! he would always remain in her thoughts. Her only son! Why did it have to be him?

The pain stabbed at her chest as she cried. It was like a hundred cold, steel thorns being driven into her heart, blow after blow. How could she ever not miss him, her Luke, her only child? How could she ever forget those eyes, that mouth? Was there anyone out there who felt her pain?

Her eyes fell on her bedside table and she saw the picture of Mary holding dead Jesus in her hands. She thought, “I know how you feel Mary”. At least she knew that there was someone out there taking care of her Luke. It was her. Mary would take care of him! Mary feels my pain, she feels my sorrow. At least there is someone who feels my love for him, for my Luke, somewhere on the other side of this wide night.

A/N: I wrote this essay for my English language exam, and got it back with the best mark I have ever had in this exam. According to my friend it’s “brilliant”, and she suggested that I should update it on the site. Well what do you think?
