Chapter 4

That night I dreamt of him.

There I was on the edge of a cliff and the King was standing there. He kept coming closer but I had nowhere to go. Then he said, “Todd push her of! Finish her. We don’t have any use for her anymore.”

Todd walked out in front of his Father and said, “No”

I woke up and lay in my bed for a while. Then I got up and started rummaging through all the drawers and shelves in my room. Meria heard me and came in. After finding out what I was looking for she hurried back with pen and paper, but wouldn’t give them to me until she had me dressed and (unfortunately) make-uped. Finally she gave them to me and left me alone, guessing correctly that I wanted some time alone.

I took the pen and paper over to the desk, sat down, and began to make a list of the people I had met so far:

-Random ladies who dressed me

-Random guy who took me around the party

-King

-Umi

-Meria

-Kiros

-Little servant guy

-Todd

Then I remembered my so-called ‘twin sister’, I added her to the list

-Weird 'sister' girl

Ok, well so far I could only really trust one person on my list: Meria. Needed to make some sort of code. I wasn’t planning on letting the list out of my sight anytime soon, but in case it somehow got lost there was no way I wanted the king to see it.

I decided to first title my list so that it would just look like I was trying to remember everyone I had met so far, and then decided to put a flower next to all the names, the people I couldn’t trust I would fill in the petals.

When I got to Todd’s name I paused. I drew my flower and stopped again. I could always fill in the petals later.

When I was done I took the piece of paper and put it under my dress in my corset (this was very hard by the way since the thing was so freaking tight) and pushed the list from my mind.

I walked into the other room and saw Meria just coming back through the main door with a tray of food. She set some plates on the table.

“Here is your breakfast. Prince Todd will be here soon so you should eat now,” she said and took the remaining plate and went and sat down on a chair in the corner where she began to eat.

“Meria? How come you’re eating over there? Come sit at the table with me,” I said as I sat down and pulled out the other chair for her.

Meria looked at me like I was crazy.

“I can’t do that, you are a princess, it is not allowed,” she said looking sad.

“Well, I don’t really consider myself a princess, this is way too much food for just me, and I’d really rather it if you came here and shared it with me,” I said, hoping she would come over.

“Well…I suppose,” Meria said with a small smile, “Thank you Princess Ayanna.”

Please stop calling me Princess. Just call me Ayanna or Aya,” I begged her. I totally hated being called princess; it just reminded me of the whole reason I was here in the first place. And I totally hated the servant thing too. I’d have much rathered if Meria could just be my friend instead of my servant.

“Ok, if you wish…Ayanna,” Meria said and smiled again. I smiled back. We ate breakfast and just as we were finishing there was a knock on the door.

“Oh god, it must be Todd!” I jumped up out of my chair and ran to the door. I pulled open the door.
