Chapter 1:
Valator leaned over the steaming demon carcass, his black, gloved hand running through the foul-smelling, viscous blood that was splattered on the cobblestone street. The darkness looming and hiding him in the shadows. He pressed the gloved hand to his tongue, tasting the blood. Hmm, a lower demon, He must be growing careless, he thought to himself as he lifted the dead demon with ease over his shoulder and leaped into the air, his obsidian wings unfurling and flaring behind his broad back, instantaneously carrying him upwards and across the sky. He was a sinister shadow against the large expanse of stars and the velvety night sky. He reached the outskirts of the sleeping city and dropped the demon on the desert ground. He chuckled a little evily and regretfully as he scolded himself. Damn, if I hadn't been so slow, I could have killed you first and then I would have been free to drink that delicious blood of yours.
He closed his eyes and stood a few feet to the side of the demon and concentrated on the rocky and dry ground before him. It shook violently till a grand amount of dirt hovered in the air, creating a large chasm for the disgusting filth to sleep in forever. While Valator held the dirt in place with his mind he focused intently on the demon and lifted it in the air and dropped it in the deep hole. He let go of the dirt and closed his eyes at the onslaught of dust that blew up in the wind and into his face. "Well that's done," he said satisfied with burying the beast and clapped his hands together.
I think I am gonna get a drink, he thought as he flew back into the city.
He landed in front of the local tavern and quickly drew his onyx-colored cloak tightly around him. He pulled the hood over his head. All that was visible of his physical body through the ominous attire were his red eyes which seemed to pierce through your very soul. He sat on a stool at the bar. He could feel the eyes of the men and women in the small room. He always got that, what with his towering height of 7 ft., his choice of clothing, and also the fact that his eyes glowed slightly, especially when he was excited. The bartender eyed him suspiciously, but he wasn't about to turn down a paying customer, noting the fact that he had a large note book of tabs next to the ancient cash register.
"What can I get for you, Sir?" The bartenders voice held fear, but Valator simply showed a close-mouthed smile, so as not to reveal his alibaster, white fangs, and answered in a deep, gruff tone,"I think I will have a whiskey, thanks." The bartender nodded and grabbed a relatively small glass. valator burst out laughing bitterly, causing the shaking bartender to jump and almost drop the expensive, glass bottle of fire water.
"W-What?"
"I'll take the whole bottle, old man, thanks," Valator replied, snatching the bottle from the aging man's hand as the moment of sudden insanity passed.
"That's expensive...s-si---," the bartender's voice broke off as Valator started to gulp down the fiery drink.
"I think I can handle my liquor," Valator replied with a slight smirk and tossed two one - hundred dollar bills on the wooden counter, before walking out of the tavern. He inhaled deeply as he headed for his home. A gust of wind blew off his hood revealing long, silver hair and a young, pale face that seemed to glow supernaturally through the gloom of night. His demon blade, Pythos, sat on his back contentedly beneath his cloak. The python,Ubel, that was wrapped around its hilt hissed as it was jostled by the constant movement. Valator reached back and patted Ubel gently on the head. "We're almost home old boy." Valator jumped up and flew to the front of an old, dilapidated catholic church. He pushed open the rotting, cherry wood doors and smiled wide for the first time. "I'm home," he yells, and listens as it echoes throughout the church. The moon light pours in through a shattered, stained glass window shedding beams on the hundreds upon hundreds of bats that hung in deep slumber on the ceiling. The silence was thick and there was not a single movement from above or around. Valator sighed happily as he headed towards an old bedroom in the back. Peaceful and quiet as always. He removed his cloak and started to peel off his black vest and other he finished undressing, he stood in front of the mirror, eyeing with displeasure the many scars that tainted his muscled back and hardened abdomen. One day those scars will fade, Valator reassured himself as he headed into the moldy bathroom. He turned on the water and stepped into the shower from hell. He grimaced as his clean feet touched the slimy floor. I need to find a new place to inhabit. After thirty minutes of washing, Valator pulled the shower curtain aside and ran his hands through his long hair, getting the last of the water out of it. He wrapped a dry towel around his slim waist and got a fire going in the fire place. He sat himself down in a worn leather chair with his bottle of whiskey and stared at the flames as if he were in a trance. Every once in awhile absentmindedly taking sips from the bottle. Flashes of unwanted memories resurfaced in Valator's muddled brain as he tossed the whiskey bottle and what was remaining in it into the fire, causing the flames to erupt and lick the outside of the fireplace. Just as Valator was drifting off in the comfortable chair, his ear twitched as he heard a flutter of wings. He didn't even turn around to see who it was. A distinct female voice quite pleasant to the ears sounded from a few feet behind Valator.
"Hello, love...how you been," the voice asked in a mocking tone of care. Valator chuckled bitterly, before asking,"What do you want, Ruine?" The attractive, female vampire stepped into Valator's peripheral vision.
"I want the money you got from that last bounty. It was rightfully mine. If I had that money right now, I wouldn't be out in the streets picking off worthless humans," Ruine sputtered as her temper grew with every little amused twitch of Valator's mouth. Valator giggled in that little insane way of his and finally turned his intense bloodshot gaze on her tall, slim frame. Well if you weren't always such a little bitch, you might be interesting to get together with, Valator mused to himself before speaking.
"I believe, Ruine, and I know," Valator putting much emphasis on "know","that you will agree with me on this, that I was the one that made that kill. Not to mention the fact that if I hadn't arrived when I had, you, in effect, would have been dead. Demon's food, to be precise," Valator said in a sweet tone that was clearly not of his character, a smug smile on his beautiful face. A crimson color crawled into Ruine's ashen face.
"AHHHH! VALATOR, YOU BASTARD! I NEEDED THAT MONEY!"
Valator simply shrugged indifferently and looked back at the fire. Ruine whipped out a daggar that had been strapped on her thigh and rushed at him, he turned one red eye at her and she stopped abruptly. He got up slowly and looked her squarely in the eye, his face barely centimeters from hers.
"Don't EVER think that you can come in MY home with THAT attitude and demand things, OR try to kill me. IF you PROCEED to do THAT again, I will do things to you that even the master would shudder at!"
Valator's voice thundered loudly through the whole cathedral causing the once dormant bats to awaken and fly around blindly in fear. The sound waves bouncing off the crumbling rock creating pandemonium for the bats. Ruine shook with dread as she shut her blue eyes tightly; she couldn't take staring into his own flaming ones. Valator laughed and let his hold go. Ruine fell to the ground on her knees trembling.
"Valator, you aren't the only one here that needs money," Ruine said , her voice pleading. Valator knew better though, that voice had lured many young men to their deaths. He showed no sympathy to her miniscule troubles.
"You are not being chased by the Devil and his soldiers. You still work for him, which is why I am shocked you haven't tried to turn me in," Valator replied, a wide smile on his face.
"Valator you know I am not capable of defeating you and I never turn my back on my kind."
Valator's grin diminished a bit as she conceded and despite all of her annoying flaws, that was one thing he did like about her, she was loyal to the cause, no matter the cost. Valator waved a hand at her as she stood up again, holding her chin high in the only form of defiance she could perform without getting killed by Valator.
"Go, I could care less about your damn problems, especially since I have more pressing ones to attend to." Ruine shook her head in disappointment and walked towards the window, turning her head around to say,"You keep being selfish Valator, cause in the end, I know you will suffer in the hands of your former master," Ruine then proceeded to jump out and leave Valator alone with his own frightening thoughts. Valator sighed heavily as he slid out of the leather seat and dragged himself towards the springy mattress. He laid down and closed his weary eyes. He entered a dream-filled sleep and writhed and twisted as he fought the enemies of his subconscious.
The sunlight spilled through open window of the dusty room. Valator cringed and quickly flipped the blankets over him. Damn, wish I had a crypt. He slid off the other side of the bed away from the infuriating light and grabbed his cloak off the closet hook. He pulled it over him along with the hood and grabbed his clothes and went into the restroom to dress, without the disturbance of the light. As he washed his face, he couldn't help but think about what Ruine had said. She may be right too. He is getting more lethal and desperate with his attempts to catch me, one careless move or mistake and I am in His grasp once again. Valator shook himself of the thought and stepped out of the restroom, getting ready to continue his daily search of bounties. Valator threw open the cathedral doors with his mind and set off at fast pace towards the city.
He had grown accustomed to the dirty looks he received as he walked down the busy sidewalks. He just wanted to find what he needed, but first, he was gonna go back and make sure that the demon, he had buried the night before, was still dead. He would need human transportation though, it was too risky to fly at this time. His eyes darted around until they landed on a black motorcycle. Perfect. He jogged across the street to it and hopped on, revving the engine and pulling out fast. He zoomed in between the cars at top speed, enjoying the feel of the cold wind whipping across his face. The sand flew up behind him in a swirl as he zipped by. He finally arrived at the demons' grave and came to a hard stop. Damn, what the hell?! Not one of those fucking things, Valator thought as he stared at a gaping whole in the ground. Just as these thoughts came through his mind, he was lifted and hurled fifty feet away. He immediately steadied himself mid-air and whirled around, drawing Pythos from his back,Ubel wrapping around his sword wielding arm like a shield. His onyx-colored, dragon wings wrapped close to his body as he made an eagle dive straight towards the demon. Two feathery, black wings emerged from the demons' back and shimmered in the sunlight. The demon chuckled in a voice that sounded like nails scraping a chalkboard and leaped into the air, flying at a horrendously high speed directly towards Valator. SHIT, was not expecting you to be this fast, you ugly bastard. Valator narrowly dodged the charging demon and his long sword. He teleported behind the demon and brought down Pythos with a surge of fury. The blade was exactly two inches from splitting the demons bulbous skull in half, before it turned its head and evaded the attack like lightning. The demon was behind Valator in a heartbeat and was starting to push his own crudely made sword into his spine. Valator stopped the shank from penetrating anymore with his mind and with focus, bashed the demon up and down against the desert ground before finally decapitating it with a deft slice of his blade. There we go. Valator chuckled as he pulled out a white cloth, that was a staggering opposite against his gloomy raiment, and wiped the gelatinous blood off of Pythos. Ubel, still wrapped around Valator's fore arm, hissed gently and started to wrap himself back around the sparkling hilt. Valator lovingly patted Ubel on the head and put the sword back into the sling on his back. Valator swaggered over to the dead beast and reached down, grabbing a gem covered in the slimy blood. The gem was concealed inside that particular demon's neck, the only way to prove you had killed it was to retrieve the gem and give it to the person paying the money. Valatar grimaced as he put the gem inside his breast pocket, knowing that the blood would stain the silk lining, and swung a leg over the motorcycle, revving it again and riding back to the city. I need food, but I need cash too, spent the last on that damn whiskey, Valator thought, scolding himself lightly. He pulled the stolen motorcycle into an empty space in front of, what seemed like a run down building. He looked around before walking in and walked straight for the back door. He exited the building and headed for the brown door in front of him, in the deserted alley. He knocked on the metal door and the square shutter on the front slid open.
"Who is it,"asked a gruff, male voice on the other side. Valator pulled the hood back a bit and watched as the guards' eyes mumbled his apologies and opened the door enough to where Valator could squeeze through. He followed the bumbling idiot down some cement stairs, music pounding and reverberating off of the stone walls. They walked into a large underground bar and club. Bodies were gyrating and twisting everywhere to the techno music that echoed throughout the room. Many were drunk and trying to start fights while others were making "pick ups." Valator sneered in disgust at the loose women that walked around making themselves "known" to the frisky men, of all ages, surrounding the bar. He weaved his way in and out of the insane crowd till the guard and himself reached a black door. Two more guards, drowning in their own stupidity, stood at both sides of the door, hands clasped in front of them. The moment they both laid eyes on Valator their mouths dropped open as both started to knock on the door loud, hard, and sequentially. They were only succeeding in annoying Valator as he sighed heavily and shoved both aside with a hard push of his mind. His own fist was raised to the door when several clanks sounded as locks were pushed back and the door was swung open. Out of the melancholy decorum of the room, a steady, stream of white smoke is all that can be seen, and it spirals upwards towards the ceiling. Valator entered the room slowly, getting the same feeling he always had when he came, the feeling that the walls were closing in on him, and that he was meeting his death. A chuckling echoed through the blackened room and Valator stopped where he was. He watched the smoke bloom and rise.
"Valator, been awhile, how you been," asked a gravelly voice, ladeled with greed and dripping with obvious sarcastic venom. Valator stood still and seemed entranced by the smoke;it looked like a phantom haunting the ceiling. Something seemed different about the room, and for Valator time seemed to slow. His head turned from side to side, in seeming slow motion as he watched Ja-Aku's cronies closing in on him, then he snapped and returned his attention to Ja-Aku.
"WAIT!" Valator procured the red jewel from the pocket of his black vest and held it towards the dark void in front of him.
'What is that, Valator, I don't have time for your games. You still have dues to pay, and if this isn't a true kinjirareta (forbidden) gem, then I have full permission to slice your head right off." Several of his guards pulled out samurai swords to make more emphasis of that threat as Ubel slithered from the hilt of Pythos and wrapped gently and loosely around Valator's neck. Valator chuckled and simply shrugged as he laid the jewel in the dark hand that was out stretched towards him. Even through the gloom that pervaded the smoke ridden air the gem sparkled and let off a dim glow as the hand shifted it, looking at every angle of it, making sure it was true. A satisfied chuckle rang through the thickened air and reverberated in Valator's mind, because he, even though he didn't know it yet, would be the one to end the life of the one uttering it.
"This is perfect, I can give you $2000 for it, take it or leave it." Valator shook his head emphatically and jerked the gem from the man's grasp and back into his own safe hand.
"I want $50,000, and thats all I'm taking," Valator replied sternly as he pulled out Pythos and frowned grimly as Ubel slid from his neck to his arm, creating a strong vise around it. He felt a slight tremor of fear run down his spine as the smoke was blown directly in his face and he felt the guards start to converge on him. Valator crouched down a bit, his wings emerging from inside the cloak and hit two of the men and knocked them unconscious with the force and leaped a couple feet off the ground. Pythos was poised before him as he used every grain of his ability to slow everything down to the bare minimum, but just as he was about to impale Ja-Aku with Pythos everything completely froze and Ja-Aku walked up to Valator, his depthless, black eyes taking him in. He took the brown cigar from his mouth as a he blew a stream of smoke into Valator's face.
"You always were rash and impulsive. Always going for the sword instead of waiting for the negotiation. I'll pay your price, but you better believe, next time you fucking get ready to kill me, HE will know and will have your soul forever in that fiery chasm He calls a home." Valator's face was frozen in an expression of anger, his red eyes full of unrestrained rage. There was a definite animalistic instinct that was a part of him, and you could only see it in that moment. Ja-Aku grunted and waved his hand everything going back to how it had been. Valator fell to the ground with a thud and looked around clearly stunned as the rest of the guards were. Ja-Aku was bent over his safe as he turned the dial left to right, back and forth. There was a click and he pushed the heavy metal door open and started to put five stacks of cash into a black bag. He threw it at Valator and sat back down.
"Go," Ja-Aku commanded as he stared at the gem admiringly and Valator exited the room, finally feeling like he could breathe. His wings folded neatly underneath his cloak as he gently slid Pythos back into its sling and Ubel went back to rest. Valator left the underground club immediately and pulled his hood on as he stepped out into the sunlight.
