The rest of that day and the next, peace reigned. The only notable occurrence was that the boys returned to their normal behavior. On the second day after the retrieval of Patty’s teeth, something else happened which attracted Coyote’s attention
As the holidays were approaching, it was the latest fad to pack a candy cane or other festive treat in your lunch. One girl, sitting by herself, had just pulled a candy cane out of her bag when a passing boy snatched it. He was just about to unwrap it, but Coyote stood up so quickly that her chair toppled over. All eyes were on us as I stood as well and we walked over.
“Give that back to her,” said Coyote. The boy glanced at Patty, remembering her fate a few days before. Then he asked, “Why should you care about her?” Coyote didn’t answer, but asked the girl, “What’s your name?” The girl smiled and said, “Stella.” I smiled back, considering it ironic that the girl Coyote Moon was rescuing had a name which meant star. She certainly was a star now, for the entire cafeteria watched her with sympathy.
“Stella is my dear friend. Aren’t you, Stella?” said Coyote. Stella’s eyes lit up and she nodded, standing and moving to Coyote’s other side. The boy glanced at Patty again. “I protect my friends.” Coyote stated. The boy handed Stella her candy cane. Coyote looked satisfied, but I told him, “You’ll apologize.” Coyote grinned as he muttered, “Sorry.” Then she corrected, “I’m sorry Stella, ma’m.” The boy looked embarrassed and said under his breath, “Sorry Stella, ma’m.” Coyote howled and Stella and I joined her.
