When I was younger, my friends and I made up a game where we were like characters from Final Fantasy. When we made our characters I called mine Sky Bolt. That was where I first made up the name but later Sky Bolt grew on me. I began using it as a screen name, which I would have used here too but it was taken already (don’t take this personally if you’re reading this but I really wish I’d got that name here first), and in my imagination I developed him as a super powered force for good in the universe. After a while I came up with a lot of explanations about how he got his powers, but I decided to make one definitive story. This is his story.

Sky Bolt

Some scientists believe that the universe has always existed, that there was no start and shall be no end. Others believe that the universe cycles with a big bang to start it and another to end it and start the next. Most believe that time has always existed and has gone on indefinitely and shall continue to do so. This is what really happened.

Darkness. At every bearing there was darkness. It was not truly the universe yet, but it was all of existence stretching forever in all directions. Within the obsidian void of nothingness there was a boy. He stood on a disk of pure white light, which floated towards what could only be described as an even darker darkness. Although there was no light, the boy could be seen exactly in every detail as if glowing, but it was more like a light shone on him from all around him. He held his hand up to the darkness in a grand gesture and said in a calm and collected voice, “We have argued for eternity. Will you never accept that there must be a balance between us?”

The darkness’ voice was like that of a booming giant yet distorted and fuzzy so much so that it could not be said what it’s voice truly sounded like since it was constantly distorting. “I will never accept defeat. But what you said is true, we have argued long enough. Perhaps I should simply destroy you and be rid of the annoyance forever.” It bellowed.

“You cannot destroy me," the boy replied, “Darkness would be nothing without light. And besides, what would you do if I weren’t here? There would be only you for all of eternity.” He tilted his head, unsure as to what the darkness would say.

“Hmm,” the darkness rumbled, “I am unsure what I would do without you here,” Dark tendrils of pure evil energy began to wrap around each other in front of the boy. “But I know one way to find out.” The tendrils fused into a ball of pure dark energy. The boy leapt back in less than a heartbeat and formed a ball of white light like that he was standing on in the palm of his hand and held it out to confront the ball of evil. The dark ball was still powerful enough to overwhelm the amount of light that the boy was wielding. He increased his power to match that of the darkness and both energies seemed to compliment each other in perfect balance.

“See?” the boy said, “You cannot beat me. We are too evenly matched for either of us to ever win. Do you wish to struggle forever like this?” he asked.

The darkness laughed deeply, “I can defeat you and you know it as well as I. Darkness conquers all.” And at that the ball of dark energy began to grow and, not even a fraction of a second behind, so did the light energy ball. They continued to grow and dwarf the boy until an indeterminate time later the boy spoke once again to the darkness. “You must finally admit that we are balanced. We have used all of our energy and neither of us has managed to outmatch the other. What say you?”

The darkness growled, it hated losing. “I have not used all of my energy, I shall destroy you if it costs me my very existence!” It shouted in an enraged voice that seemed to have become nothing but hatred and anger. It had once been more, as calm as the boy was and it had a form like his, though it had been so long since he had seen it, the boy wondered whether the darkness itself remembered it’s true form. As the shout died, the immense ball of dark energy surged with newfound power.

The boy could not understand. He and the darkness were supposed to be evenly matched and yet it had found a way to increase its strength. “How are you doing this?” he shouted, but there was no response. The ball of light was being pushed back slowly and so was the boy. Suddenly images started flashing before the boy’s eyes, images of things that were as wonderful as they were strange, things he had never imagined. In fact he had never truly imagined anything before. The last thing he saw was something that seemed very familiar to him. Then he understood. Reaching out with his free hand, the boy scooped some energy from his ball of light and forced it to take form. Then, quickly, he threw it into the light. It simply floated within the ball, not rejoining the rest of the light and adding its power back to the whole. He had guessed that would happen, but there was no going back on his plan now. He knew that the only way that the darkness could have gained this much power was to have joined its own life energy with its ball of darkness. That being the case, the boy knew he had to as well. He began to glow so brightly that the light of his ball of energy seemed dim in comparison. He slowly fused with it and when he finally had, he set his plan into motion.

Light. The balls of light and dark had suddenly vanished and a brilliant display of energy in all colours and patterns scattered in every direction. They flew out at speeds so great that they seemed there and suddenly gone. There was darkness too, what scientists would someday call dark matter and dark energy. They balanced the display of light in almost a mirrored explosion within the light. Both scattered equally but there were 2 distinct forms that could be seen. On one side of the explosion, an orb of immense darkness so powerful that no light from the blast could escape it. On the other was a shiny shape that had a radiance to it that seemed ethereal, magical. The forms were sent in complete opposite directions to one another. But the boy’s plan was not over. No, it had not truly even begun. Someday it would when the light was reborn. It would happen, he had seen it.
