Okay, so I decided to post up another story...I can't help it; the idea for this came and captivated me. I will be attempting to update my other stories soon as I am done with college until January.

1st Entry

December 11, 2006

Dear Journal,

I couldn’t believe my luck today! I went to the used bookstore across town to see if I could find a journal that hadn’t been used and I found one (if you couldn’t tell that already). It amazes me how many people buy a journal, fully intending to write in it, but then forget all about it. My thoughts have been crazy lately due to all of my college classes, my extra-curricular activities, and hanging out with my friends. Soon I will have to return home, due to Winter Break. It is not something that I am looking forward to. I don’t get along with my family at all. My Dad treats me like I know nothing, despite the fact that I’m now in college and he never even graduated high school, my Mom is constantly degrading me, and my younger brother is constantly going on and on about how hott he is.

Sometimes I wonder why God put me in this family; no one there understands me and I’m like the black sheep. I just wish things could be different. Because of my family, my self-esteem has plummeted in the past few years, though no one could tell that by looking at me. I’ve worked hard to hide the fact that I’m not a happy, average girl. I’ve made a surrogate family for myself consisting of my close friends. They support and encourage the things I do and the activities I’m in, making me feel like I do have a purpose and I’m not as worthless as my real family makes me feel.

Wait…I need to back up a little. I’ve never started a journal without describing myself first. It’s a nice way to see how much I’ve changed over the years. I’m an 18 year old brunette and my hair falls in waves around my shoulders. I’ve always loved my hair because it doesn’t get frizzy like a lot of curly hair and yet, it isn’t as boring as plain old straight hair. My eyes are a lovely, enriched chocolate brown, a good reminder of one of my favorite things to eat: chocolate. I’m of average height, standing at around 5’7” and despite my chocolate intake level, I’m not fat. Then again, I’m not anorexic either. I guess you could just call me average.

Anyway, my real challenge for this school year isn’t the class load or worrying about gaining the freshman 15 because I could care less about those things. Instead my challenge is remaining sane during holiday breaks…because we have multiple breaks. Don’t get me wrong; I love my family, but I also think that they’re all INSANE. And, on break, I won’t be around my friends. They keep me from falling into depression; I can’t imagine college without them.

Wow…well I had probably stop before I start rambling because I tend to do that a lot, especially when discussing my family.

Until the next time,

Melinda
