The Highway Cowboy
(© Jeff Baker 22nd December 2006)

I am the Highway Cowboy
Through the dark night I do ride
Five-hundred screaming horses
My true love on my mind

I am the Highway Cowboy
From New Orleans to Santa Fe
Riding with the wind
Full bore all the way

Cross mountain, hill and desert
The lonesome road my only friend
As the lights of sleeping towns
Glitter along the way

From LA to Chicago
The Mother Road my true home
Got to keep on moving
Pick up yet another load

I am the Highway Cowboy
From Atlanta to Frisco Bay
Sixteen years of hard trucking
Wouldn’t have it any other way

I am the Highway Cowboy
On a steel and iron hoarse I do ride
The road beckons ever onwards
To greet yet another day

Through snow and wind and raid
Never slowing I do drive
Always anticipating
Getting my load in on time

I am the Highway Cowboy
Until the day I die
Forever moving onwards
Underneath this endless sky
