When We Were Young
Syne27

When we were seven, nothing was wrong.
We were just two little kids - two of a kind.
When we were seven, we were children.
What can go wrong in a child's mind?

When we were eight, you showed me worlds
where monsters were real, and legends were true.
When we were eight, I grew silent.
No one saw - no one cared. No one but you.

When we were nine, you found your niche -
your place in society, your place to belong.
When we were nine, I was alone.
You tried to help, but you weren't that strong.

When we were ten, you had a family:
Your Mum and Pops, your bro and your dog.
When we were ten, I ran away,
and left you to face the future's fog.

When we were eleven, you were lonely.
Your friends all disappeared, and fled.
When we were eleven, I came back,
Just long enough to see the tears you'd shed.

When we were twelve, your Pops died.
Not in body, but in spirit - and we mourned him together.
When we were twelve, I found a home.
It wasn't perfect, but it was a fair friend in fair weather.

When we were thirteen, your Mum fled,
and ran to her old home, to her family.
When we were thirteen, I could see.
You'd follow her anywhere, happily.

When we were fourteen, you fled.
So eager to join your Mum; to depart...
When we were fourteen, I cried.
You left me alone, and the world fell apart.
