Athens
Athens lies in quiet white
That fell from Mount Hymetus' height
Honey and snow in ancient sight
Honey and snow of Grecian might
Syntagma's trees stand tall and still
And which remember sylvan thrill
Of nymph and satyr shouting shrill
From slopes of Lykavittos Hill
Icicles on acropolis
Kolonaki wrapped in Christmas
Prayers in the Christokopidis
Candles light the metropolis
A dove alights on the soldier
Coos hind an Evzone's shoulder
When the night grows somewhat colder
The amber begins to smolder
I think it was Christmas 2002 when Athens received a whole three inches! People were so excited. Athens’ Constitution Square (Syntagma) was home to the tallest Christmas tree in Europe. Their were electric lights and youthful Santa Clauses, mostly Albanian guys, offering sleigh rides for a few drachma. I am willing to bet the Greeks were out of their minds with the white stuff all over their capital. This poem takes some of Athens well known landmarks and puts them in a yuletide setting. I have never gone to Greece, let alone Athens during Christmas, but I think it is something like this though there is much more noise. Hahaha.
