What Happened to Happy Endings?

Disney movies always have happy endings, don’t they? You’d think that someone who grew up on a diet of Disney would have accepted happy endings, wouldn’t you? Well, I haven’t.

The way I see it, one of two things could have happened –or maybe both have happened. Either I became cynical of all the prince-and-princes happy endings that were forced down my throat… or I just never fully left the world of fantasy.

I mean, take the classics: Sleeping Beauty. Cinderella. Little Mermaid. An “outcast” princess –and the prince always falls in love with her. And the live “happily ever after.” Same goes for Aladdin and Lady and the Tramp, except in this case it’s the prince (i.e. male) who’s the outcast. And Pocahontas, too… and Shrek, if you kind of want to go on coming up with examples. Find me ONE Disney movie that does not get a happy ending, go on…

But where does that leave me?

My “Prince Charming” worships his ex, and hates/ignores me. My friends/sidekicks are all involved in happy, productive relationships. Oh, and I am not your typical gorgeous princess, to keep messing things up for Cupid. That poor guy will have to work overtime to get my love life sorted out.

Personally, I’d go with the second option: I’ve never fully abandoned fantasyland. A place where everything happens if I want it to. If I want him to notice me, he does. If I want long red hair…voila!

There’s nothing wrong with fantasy when it’s all you can ever have. Imagining everything was as it used to be. Imagining you were mine. Imagining I’m pretty.

So what happened to happy endings? Cos I see no hope of one for me…. And I can’t dream one up for long enough to satisfy me.
