Fifteen months later the city was searched by rescuers. They came to the Happy Time Daycare Center, and found this letter.

To whoever may find this I want you to know I am truly sorry.

My Name is Rebecca Anibelle Anthony. I worked here. I kept the children safe and then I killed them . I don’t expect forgiveness for what I have done, I did what I thought was best. Maybe someone else could have kept the children alive, I failed. I have accepted that.

The children were Angela McKnight, age 8. Nicholas Webster, age 4. Michael Fukui age 8. Renee Freeborn, age 5. Natasha Kozlov, age 7. Adam Klaus, age 5. Andrew Brady, age 6. Trevor Brynes, age 4. Amanda Zelinko, age 7.

If you know any of their relatives please let them know they did not starve, or suffer. I made sure to drug them before blocking the chimney. They sang songs, ate cookies, drank some juice, and went to sleep. Only then did I become a murderer.

My deepest fear is that I sent two boys off with strangers who promised to return for the rest of us. The boys were Ricky Barros, age 6, and his best friend Todd Kennedy, age 7. I don’t know what has become of them. Although my dreams let me know all the things that could have happened to them. I prayed regularly that I did the right thing, but like all my other prayers it has gone unanswered.

I can say nothing more except that I was alone, with them for two weeks. Our food and water may have lasted another week, maybe two on survival rations. But their was no sign of life. Nothing to give me hope. I thought it best for the children to die peacefully in their sleep, rather then painfully waste away from starvation and dehydration. If I was wrong then it matters little, I’m already damned for my actions.

The oatmeal is well sealed, it should be edible. I’m sorry but I had to use up most of the remaining water, and sugar. To ensure the children stayed asleep I put some aspirine in their drinks, the sweetness overpowered the bitter taste of the pills. Any supplies you may require are yours.

I do have one request, please do not take anything from the childrens bodies. Bury them, cremate them, or let the remain here forever untouched, just let the children keep some of their dignity.
