Songs of the Super Hero
My little brother Tony was watching TV, at least I thought he was. I walk into the living room. He was nowhere to be found.
“Tony,” I called. “Where are you?”
No answer…..
“Tony?”
“I am right here,” he finally answered.
“Right here!” he replied.
I look out on the front balcony. Tony is wearing a cape.
“Tony?” I asked.
“Yes?” he said.
“What are you doing?”
“The question is, what are you doing Kia?”
“Looking for you,” I said pointing out the obvious.
“I am not Tony. I am Super Tony!”
“That’s nice, now get down from there before you hurt yourself.”
“I really am Super Tony, you just don’t know it.”
“Right,” I said, trying my best to humour my little brother.
“No really I can fly. You want to see?” Tony insisted.
“Seriously Tony, I don’t want you to get hurt!”
“But Kia I really can!”
The only way Tony could fly is if he were a bird, which he is not, I thought.
“Watch me,” Tony whined.
“Watch you what,” I replied, “kill yourself?”
Tony jumps off the balcony.
“Tony wait!”
Too late! Tony was floating in mid air?
“See I told you I could fly,” Tony said sticking his tongue out at me.
“I suggest you come back here Tony,” I demanded.
“Why?”
“Why? Maybe because you could fall and hit the ground.”
“I have not fallen yet. I am flying,” Tony said.” Kia I am Super Tony!”
“Yeah and I am a spy.”
“Are you really?”
“No if I was I would not have told you.”
“I think you would make a great spy.”
“Tony, get in here. I put on Super Joey for you to watch.”
“Kia, I don’t like fakers. Super Joey is on wires.”
“OK then, how about Mosquito Man?”
“Umm….no!”
“How about Fro-Boy?”
“He is Super Joeys almost side kick, so no!”
“Do you want to listen to music?” I asked, trying to get my little brother inside before someone called the cops or worse Mom coming home. How would I explain Tony floating, sorry flying?
“Why yes I do!” Tony replied. “How about, Songs of the Super Hero?”
“Songs of the Super Hero?” I asked, puzzled. “Do we even have that CD?”
“Go inside and look,” Tony suggested.
“Umm…only if you come inside too.”
“You first,” Tony smiled.
“No you first,” I replied. I know his tricks.
“I will follow you,” he said. “I promise.”
“Well OK then,” I said, even though I knew he would not follow. There was no reasoning with a flying 11-year-old who claims to be a super hero.
I walked around pretending to look. I am a professional at not looking. I would rather it jump in front of my face, than waste my time looking. Tony knew this. He is smart.
I walk back out on the balcony. I found the CD. We actually have Songs of the Super Hero?
“Tony…”I started.
Oh no! Tony is no longer here. Where did that brat fly off too?
I
look at my watch, it is 1:45 p.m. Mom will be home at 3 p.m.
That means I have to find him in 1hr and 15 minutes.
I grab my coat and wheel my bike to the door. I was almost out, until I forgot my helmet. You never know. I make it out of the apartment building. I started on my expedition when, WHAM! I ran in to Janie Moore.
“Watch where you are going Kia!” she said.
“Sorry, I have to go!” I said, as I tried to get away before Janie could bore me with here boring stories about meeting flying faker, Super Joey, as Tony prefers to call him.
“Wait, Kia!” she called. “I am suing you for wrecking my shoes.”
“OK you do that,” I said, like I care about her perfect shoes.
I turned around Janie was following me. Just ride faster.
“Kia, I have nothing better to do, so I will talk to you,” Janie said.
Ride faster how come this bike won’t go faster? SMACK! I hit a telephone pole. That was not there before. I feel special now. Why does this happen to me.
“Kia, why didn’t you wait?” Janie asked.
“Because I have more important things to do,” I replied, fixing the chain on my bike. It fell off when I crashed.
“Like what?” Janie said, bringing out her note book. (Janie is a journalist)
“None of your business,” I shouted.
“Really,” she said, writing in her stupid book.
“Listen my brother is missing,” I said. Whoops I should not have told her that.
“Oh dear,” she replied. “I will organize a search party immediately.”
“That won’t be necessary,” I told her.
“I will but a bulletin on the 6 O’ clock news,” she said, ignoring me. “This is a good story.”
“I will find my brother before 6 O’ clock Janie.”
“Hey, thank your brother for going missing,” she said. “Oh, I will call Super Joey for you. He is excellent at finding.”
She walked off excitedly. Thank my brother for going missing? Janie you suck. Oh I will call Super Joey. Go ahead and call him so I can smack him over his egotistical head. Yours too Janie Moore! I will show you. I will find Tony.
2:25 p.m. I wasted half an hour.
I barely start again, when I almost hit a dog.
“Oh No! Did I hurt you?” I said to the dog, like it would understand me anyway.
“I am fine, next time watch where you are going or I will have to eat you,” he said surprising me.
I looked at the dog, he had honey coloured eyes and a box shaped head. He was a Rottweiler. He looked like the type to eat people, but something told me looks can be deceiving.
“I am really sorry,” I said. “You know, you could always eat Janie Moore instead.”
“I don’t think so,” he replied.
“Its her fault I almost ran into you,” I said.
“Oh is it then? In that case where did the bitch go?”
“To the left,” I said.
“Thanks,” he said. “My name is Wild Will, W-I-L-D W-I-L-L.”
“Oh, my name is Kia,” I replied. “K-I-A”
He ran off in Janie Moore’s direction, apparently going to eat her. I don’t think he will though. I believe he is all talk and no action.
2:23 p.m., 37 minutes to go, I start riding my bike again.
I stop at my friend Ashlyn’s house, while avoiding crashing into people, trees, well you know. I walk up the stone steps to the big red door.
Knock, Knock!
“Whose there?” Ashlyn answered.
“Banana,” I said.
“Banana who?” she replied.
Knock, Knock!
“Whose there?”
“Banana,” I said again.
“Banana who?” she replied yet again.
Knock, Knock!
“Whose there?”
“Orange,” I said.
“Orange who?” she replied.
“Orange you glad I did not say banana?” I asked.
Now you probably wonder, what was the point of all of that? As do I. Every time I come to Ashlyns house that is our secret knock I guess you could say.
She opens the door.
“Yes I am actually,” Ashlyn said. “What is the Dilly?”
“I need your help. My brother is missing.”
“Tony?” she asked.
“Well he is the only brother I have,” I replied.
“Oh well. How can I help?” she asked. “You know what would be a start, how did he go missing?”
“He flew off the balcony,” I said.
“OK then Kia. Come back when you have a better excuse to talk to me.”
“Can I borrow some paper?” I asked.
“No you can’t. Go away. I am mad at you.”
She slammed the door in my face.
2:42 p.m. 18 minutes. There is no way I will find him in time.
I walk back past the gate, to see Wild Will? How did he get there so fast.
“Well this is a surprise,” I said.
“Yes it is,” Wild Will replied. “Some friend, do you want me to eat her?”
“No!” I replied. “She will get over it. I can’t expect her to believe my brother flew away off the balcony.”
“Your brother is missing then?” Wild Will asked.
“Yes, I have 11 minutes to find him. My mom will be home by 3 p.m.”
“You mean 1 hour and 10 minutes,” Wild Will pointed out. “Your watch is wrong by and hour it’s actually 10 to two.
Duh how could I forget about daylight savings time?
“Really this is great,” I replied. “Can you help me find him?”
“Yes, then I will eat him.”
“Ah, no you won’t!”
“I am just kidding,” he replied. “I don’t really eat people I just threaten too. It is kind of a bad habit.”
“Right, that is no big deal.”
“Hey, if I help, will you get me a veggie burger?”
“Sure why not it is the least I could do.”
Veggie burger? This day is getting weirder and weirder.
“Thanks Kia, you’re a pal.”
“Umm… thanks,” I said. I could feel my face turning red.
I turned around. It was Janie Moore. What is she doing here? And how did she get here so quickly?
“I hope you don’t mind, but I followed you here,” Janie said.
“How did you get here so fast?” I asked.
“Super Joey helped me,” she said in a matter of fact tone. “In fact he is looking for your brother right now, but that is not what interests me.”
“What is it then?” I asked.
“Its your talking Rotty.”
I looked at Wild Will. He was completely silent.
“Don’t be silly dogs don’t talk,” I said. “Well I guess barking counts.”
“I heard him speak English,” Janie said, obviously not stupid.
Wild Will just sat there looking at me.
“What is the dogs name?” Janie asked, bringing out her notebook once again.
I look at Wild Will.
“Is it OK if I tell her your name,” I whisper.
He inconspicuously shakes his head no.
“Umm… Ruth…less Roy, yeah that’s it Ruthless Roy,” I lied.
“Ruthless Roy, I love that name,” Janie said. “Say something Ruthless Roy. Speak!”
“Bark, bark, bark,” Wild Will said.
“That’s not right,” she replied. “Now speak like a good doggy.”
“Woof, woof,” Wild Will replied.
“You know Janie, you may have the wrong dog,” I said. Hopefully she would give up and leave.
“Well I guess you’re right. Don’t find your brother, you hear. Super Joey will find him,” Janie said, while walking away.
“Grr…,” Wild Will growled, looking at Janie.
“Like hell, I will let Super Joey find him,” I said. “That Janie Moore!”
“Oh no, it is 10 after 3,” I said.
“10 after 2,” Wild Will corrected me, now talking again. “Come on lets go.”
Wild Will and I went back to town, while I showed people a picture of my darling little brother. Of course no one had seen him. I was starting to get desperate. It was 2:40 (since my clock was an hour ahead) I was 20 minutes away from home.
“I better go home, just incase Tony came home while I was gone, you never know,” I said.
“OK, I will keep a look out for him,” Wild Will replied.
“Thanks for your help,” I said, as I rode my bike home.
I got upstairs.
“Tony, are you here?”
“Yes and where have you been Kia?” Tony replied.
“Where are you?”
“Right here,” he replied.
“I need specifics,” I said.
“I am on the balcony.”
I walk to the balcony to see my brother once again floating in mid air.
“Where did you go? I was looking all over for you.”
“Oh, I was just flying around. I am Super Tony after all,” Tony said.
“You shouldn’t have done that.”
“I did not go far away, honest.”
“Come inside, NOW!” I said. “I have your CD Songs of the Super Hero.”
“Oh well isn’t that special,” Tony replied. “I will listen to it later.”
“Later? I said, “After all of this trouble?
Knock! Knock!
“Whose there?” I asked.
“Wild Will.”
Oh, I forgot his veggie burger.
“Come in,” I said opening the door.
“So,” Wild Will said. “Where is my veggie burger?”
“Umm… I ah…,” I started.
“Here is its,” Tony chimed in. He threw the veggie burger out the door. Wild Will ran after it, while saying. “You should not of done that, now I am going to eat you.”
Tony quickly slams the door.
“So, do you think he will eat us?” I asked.
“Well he ate Super Joey,” Tony replied.
“Oh, well umm… how about listening to Songs of the Super Hero?” I suggested.
“Good idea,” Tony said.
We partied like super heroes until Mom came home. Wild Will never ate us. I suppose it was one of those abandoned useless threats or he was not hungry anymore.
My thoughts: It needs more of a beginning. Not to mention the whole scene where Kia goes to visit her friend is pointless.
