Downpour

March, 2006

Straight down falls the rain

Steady, heavy, calm and sane

It’s times like these in which you learn

To light bonfires without suff'ring burns

Why the wild eyed birds in winter fly south

That sweet apples taste better on another’s mouth

Straight down pours the rain

Leaking through my roof again

This verse returned to years ago

Hackneyed rhymes go much too slow

Windswept minds misplace birthdates

Leave their salvation to the fates

Straight down crashes rain

Sweetly humming, soft refrain

Punctuated pickup line

Delivered long before its time

Battle scars my roots have borne

Perhaps come springtime, they’ll be gone.
