She was always smiling. It was never a toothy grin or a conceited one. It was always just a simple little smile.
Even when she got a puppy like she wanted, it was just that little smile. Even when that dog died, there was that little smile. No matter what happened, that little smile was evident on her face.
But, her smile never reached her eyes. There was never that twinkle in her eyes nor were there any exaggerated movements when she greeted her boyfriend. No hugs. No kisses. Just that smile.
But, nobody ever really said anything about that missing twinkle in her eyes. That missing passion. Or maybe, people just never noticed the hollowness of her eyes.
Maybe I was the only one that noticed, but then again, I never even talked to her. What was I supposed to do? Go up to her and say “Hi, Why are your eyes so hollow?” Yeah… Right. She was just some girl in my school anyways.
We were in the same grade. Obviously, we graduated the same time. But that has nothing to do with anything. I never did see her after graduation. She ended up in some fancy expensive college while I just went to a little community college.
Then, one day, I picked up a newspaper. I really have no idea why. I never looked at newspapers in the past so why now? The girl from my high school was on the cover. Apparently she had overdosed on some drugs and had slashed at her arms. The police found her dead body in her apartment days after her suicide.
Obviously, I never found out why she did it. How could I? The one person who could tell me was her. And, she was dead. Maybe she felt as hollow as her eyes seemed. Maybe, she wondered if she could live through the crap she did. Maybe there was too much pressure pulling her down.
But I wonder something. If I did confront her back then, would the results have been different. If I found out why she seemingly lacked emotion, would she still be alive?
It really doesn’t matter. It’s in the past. She’s already dead and gone, but maybe, just maybe, I could have changed her fate.
