Dedications: I dedicate this my first novel to Sam, Katie, Patience, and Kay. You girls have stood by me and supported me even when I didn't deserve it. You've been honest and without you I would never have done any of this. I also dedicate this to Mutti und Vati. I Love you two! You never told me I couldn't and therefore I did.
Prologue
As the only son of two peace makers in the middle east, during the early 2000's. He lived with his aunt and her son in Germany. However, when Alfonzo Auch reached the age of five his parents sent for him. He was raised from that point on in the homes of the richest men in the middle east. He spent most of his time alone. In his solitude he began to notice flaws in the kingdoms that played host to his family. By the time he was fifteen he had completed his schooling. After that he was employed, against his parents' wishes, by a king to point out the flaws in his kingdom. Alfonzo was paid with the hand of Rhia the king's daughter. The two then traveled from kingdom to kingdom building the trust and respect as great peace makers. By the time he reached his twenty first birthday Auch had settled the long standing unrest in the these countries. Then lust for power sent him on quest that would destroy the world.
In no time he and his followers conquered the middle east, Asia, and Africa. With the people he had over come he wasted no time in storming Russia then the rest of Europe. His men sailed to Chili to take over South America. At the age of 35 the final battle for the world took place, at Plymouth Rock. A few month later his wife would give birth to their only child, Halla. Rhia stayed with Auch until he placed laws forcing the people of 2047 to return to a clothing style last seen in the late 19th century America. As the laws' strictness increased so did Rhia's love for her husbands best friend. Soon Rhia, Halla, and Rhia's lover fled Auch's reaches.
Halla grew up not knowing her father or her background. Her mother finally revealed it to her on her death bed. Halla was only half believing when she told her sons and daughters of their blood. She had unfortunately married a man who put his money before his wife and children and when they fell ill he put off doctor visits for to long and they died a slow painful death. All save Halla's two sons. The heirs' to the throne of the "King Bear".
Chapter 1
"Ally, get down and be quiet." Gunther whispered. We were hiding in the brush as the large trucks loaded with officials went by. Gunther wasn't my brother but we told everyone he was. If we didn't I would have been sent to a work center, awful places. If you’re lucky you just have to cook or do the laundry for what ever community you're placed in. Some of the pretty girls get worse jobs. I'm not sure what those jobs are. Gunther won't tell me. Of course I don't expect him to. Mother never would.
So instead of vexing my brother I just crawled deeper into the brush and bramble. He always swore he'd find me a good home where I would be taken care of. I knew the truth. We both did. It was only a matter of time until we are caught and put to death, or worse. I suppose if any of this is to make since I should tell you how it all got started.
My mother had gotten very ill. I don't know who it was but someone told on us. My father had been killed earlier that year and then my mother got sick. General Mark Hamilton came and took my mother. Before he came I said my good byes and ran off. I was just six years old. It wasn't until two years later, after making my living off of the kindness of brave souls, that I met Gunther. Like an angel Gunther appeared. I had gotten caught stealing from a supply cart. I was just so hungry. While one officer held me the other three questioned me. I couldn't understand them. They spoke to many languages at once and used big words.
"There you are, Chole! Mother is worried sick. You best come home now, Sister." he called coming up and wrenching me free of my captors grip. He then knelt before me. "What sort of trouble have you gotten into now?" he asked. I was more confused now than ever but seeing that he was at least trying to help while others gawked I smiled.
"I'm sorry Big Brother. I was just hungry and tried to get a cookie. It's been a long time since we had any treats... I didn't mean to be a trouble." I looked at my feet and pouted.
"It's okay. Isn't it officers?" he asked standing up and looking to the men. "I'm sure you've got a wee one of your own. They can get so grabby when they see sweets." he hammered it home. The one who was apparently their leader nodded.
"Yes, I've got a little girl her age at home. Just make sure your sister, don't do it again. Next time we'll not wait to take her in." Gunther nodded. "That would be a pity she's a pretty thing."
"I'm sure Father will give her a good lashing when he finds out." he then took my hand and we walked down the dirt road. It had been months since we had any rain. The crops didn't grow well in good seasons so everyone was becoming more protective of what they did have. I was shocked when Gunther kept hold of my hand.
"Sir, can I go now?" I questioned once I was sure we weren't being watched. He just shook his head.
"You don't have family." he stated more than asked.
"No."
"Then you will stay with me." I did too. For the next several weeks we traveled on. I would steal things if I got caught he'd come running up out of seemingly nowhere. Each time I had a different name. Each time he swore our father would beat me and our mother was worried. It was a decent enough life style. At least I was never hungry. He taught me how to fight and what to say to make the Royal Officials believe I was just lost and hungry. It was good to have a companion. But he never spoke about himself and it wasn't until I asked that he told me his name.
"Ally, you might as well go to sleep. I'll wake you just before dawn." I looked up at him and realized I'd nearly drifted off already. I had placed my head in his lap and he was running his fingers through my hair. I loved my hair the first few days after I washed it. It would lay in golden curls. Mother always said someone had cut the suns hair and given it to me to wear. She used to tell such wonderful stories about gods and goddess. I started to ask Gunther to tell me a story but he just gave me a fleeting smile before his face went back to hiding behind a stone mask. So rarely did he show true emotion. "Hush, Sister. It is time to sleep." So I closed my eyes and gave in to the sleep.
As he promised, he shook me awake just before dawn. I stood carefully and shook myself free of the chains of sleep. He pulled my hair back and braided it tying it off with a sky blue ribbon. The blue of the ribbon matched my eyes. Sometimes, Gunther would tell me I looked like a little angel but that was only when I needed to hear it. Now he pointed to a patch of mushrooms that would serve as todays breakfast. Along the way we'd find a stream. We were always bathed and never thirsty. Mother Earth always took care of that.
I'd asked about his past a few times in those early days of our life together. It was like a dark shadow crossed his face. There was something in his past that was so dark. Something had happened that was so horrible he never wanted to think of it. I'd asked about his mother. He only told me she was at peace now. Once I asked of his father. He didn't speak to me for the rest of the day. He says he has siblings but never met any of them. I thought this odd but never said anything more about them.
We disagreed on a lot of fronts back then. I pray to every divine power I can think of to keep me and him safe. He tells me not to beg my imaginary friends to protect him. That is one of his wishes I will never respect. In all the time we've been together there's not been a night that I haven't prayed for his soul.
"Why don't you believe in gods?" I asked him one afternoon while we trudged down the muddy road to the next community.
"If they existed they wouldn't have let the world get this far off. I mean the earth has known great kings and vicious dictators. Ally, no one, anywhere, has the freedom to do anything now. It's not right. We can't speak up for ourselves. We can't chose our own names or even die in our own beds."
"We chose our names." I reminded him. He nodded.
"We don't belong to them. We're like ticks feeding on a deer. We gain from them but we don't belong to them." I didn't understand that then but with time I came to understand a lot of what he said.
"If we are just ticks why don't they pick us off and burn us?" Gunther laughed.
"They try. Why do you think we never stay anywhere very long? If I had it my way I'd be sitting back home with no worries."
I knew this was a lie. Once you get to a certain age the officers, called Uggs who watch you your entire life, come get you and make you marry another person. Then the Uggs give you a job. It's normally mind numbing work but all the same it pays for your home and if you do your job well they won't split up your family. I realized that Gunther was just a few short years from that age. That is our biggest fear now. I'm no longer able to pull of the cute lost little sister act. I've gained a woman's body in the past few years. It's not one I like, but it serves it's purpose. Gunther has grown into his long arms and legs too. When I met him he was like a puppy whose feet are to big for it. Now he's nearing his twenties.
We didn't just chose our names. We created our own birthdays and everything. He taught me to read and write too. There are so many things Gunther knew that most boys his age didn't. At first it shocked me. We'd be coming up with a days plan and he'd do or say something that no boy of ten years old knows around here anymore. After a while I began to pick the skills up like reading and math. Then I was ready for anything.
"Ally, do you know which C camp we'll be entering today?" he asked from beside me. I glanced towards his forest green eyes.
"No, should I?" I asked. He shrugged.
"Your dear Patrick lives here is all." he said. Patrick was a boy who claimed to have known Gunther during his younger years. He'd been a great help in a tight spot a few years before and I was glad to find myself back on the paved road toward him. C camps were built more permanent looking. Where most the communities looked like little temporary three walled shelters, C camps had stone buildings and we're packed full of officers and their families.
"He's not my Patrick. He's your friend. I never would of met him had he not known you."
"Oh sure. You wouldn't have noticed him at all right?" he teased. He knew I thought Patrick was handsome. Who wouldn't? He had pale eyes that when threaten turned to ice, shoulder length black hair, and was built sturdy. He was also a Freeman. Or would be when his father died. Freeman ran business and were in charge of a company of Uggs. They owned land but kept their homes in C camps. They would chose a son normally their oldest who would take on their title when they died and the other sons would become officers.
"I might have noticed him but I surely wouldn't of learned his name. Nor ever felt comfortable asking for his aid." Gunther's lips pulled upward into a smile. "Beside that Gunny-boy, if I remember correctly there is a green eyed girl here by the name of Athena isn't there?" he blushed slightly and we fell silent for the rest of our walk.
