Soft Journey

When I was young I admired your taught skin

and the way the sun shined in your eyes.

-How they glimmered when they looked at me.-

I remember the effortless way you lifted my tiny body.

I can still hear your strong but gentle voice singing.

As you marked the lines on the wall

higher

higher

higher

I never realized that you weren’t growing taller with me.

Time could not fly fast enough for me.

I longed for the recognition that came with age,

but I stopped for the first time and

looked

looked

looked

When did those eyes become so dull?

-The lines of wisdom etched in your features.-

When did you stop singing?

When did you become so small?

When I was young I loved your strength.

I needed it to survive.

But as I grew I loved your tender attributes.

And suddenly it was you who needed me.

And now the sun gleams in my eyes.

And it is my taught skin.

Once you lifted me in the air.

Now I watch you lowered

down

down

down
