Chapter 1
Prologue
There was a loud shatter as the house rocked. Katalina lay still in her bed as she heard her father run from his room and down stairs to the main floor. There was shouting for a view moments before her father cried out in pain. She whimpered covering her ears as she heard her mothers light foot steps follow her father’s path. There was yet again another scream of agony. “Mama? Daddy?" Katalina squeked quietly, "Charlie?” Katalina whimpered as she shot up rushing to her brother’s bedroom. “Charlie?” She pushed her way into his room and clamered timidly into his bed shaking gently. “I’m scared!” Katalina whined as she watched her elder brother sit up slowly.
Charlie looked down at his sister and pressed his finger to his lips, “I know." He whispered hugging his younger sister, "Be quite and hide in the closet ok? Don’t come out until I come and find you ok?” He whispered as he heard his parents yell for help. Katalina shook in fear her eyes wide as there was the sound of braking glass, Charlie grasped her shoulders, “Undrestand?”
Katalina slowly nodded her head after she heard another blood curdling scream from her mother. Tears began to prick her eyes as Charlie pushed her into the closest leaving the door open slightly, “Cover your ears.” He whispered hugging her quickly before closing the door fully.
Katalina let her tears flow down her cheeks as she slowly reached her small shaking hands and covered her ears and hummed ‘I’m a little Tea pot’ over and over in her head.
Charlie grabbed his baseball bat and slowly made his way into the main hallway of the house.
“These aren’t them.” He heard a elder mans voice hiss.
“Shell we simply kill them then? They have seen our faces.” Came a sinister womans voice.
“Do as you two see fit, I do not care.” Spoke a rather monotoned sounding male.
“Yes sir.” replied the elder man, and the woman’s voice.
Charlie’s eyes widened as he moved quickly to the stairs grabbing the cordless phone as he dialed, 9-1-1. There was a long silence as the number did not dial out. ‘It’s dead…’ he thought gripping his bat tightly as he hurried down the stairs, but tried his best to be quite.
There was the sound of tearing paper and the snapping of sticks as well as the hushed sighs of pain. Charlie stood pressed tightly against the wall. His heart hammered in his head. He rounded the corner holding his bat tight.
There on the floor lay the dead bodies of his mother and father, crouched over them with their fangs sunk deep into his parents skin were an elder man and a young woman. Charlies hand shook as he watched in pure horror as his parents blood was sucked from their bodys.
“You…” He whispered, noticing the vampires open their eyes and look at the young boy, “YOU!” He screamed throwing his bat at the elder man.
The woman pulled back her fangs glaring at the young boy. She stood tall her black cloak fell to the floor, “You little brat.” She hissed ready to pounce the child who would so dare as to hit her comarade.
“Do not mind him.” The elder vampire spoke smoothly, “We have more to do, and Lord Darius would not want us killing children.” He scolded, “Come.” He grabbed the womans elbow quickly pulling her to the window as the shrill of sirens filled the air.
“Mother… Father…” Charles spoke gently as he sunk to his knees tears burning his eyes. “NO!” He cried out in an agony that no child should know before his eyes flashed darkly and he swore revenge for his parents, for his family.
The phycologist smiled patting Charlie’s shoulder, “Oh course you did. I am sorry.” She nodded before writing something on a small pink slip and stood slowly.
“You don’t believe me! None of you believe me!” Charlie’s face grew read as he clenched his fists. No one would believe him, he was telling the truth didn't they see that?
“Charlie I believe you will remember the truth when the shock of find your… parents… passes.” Her voice was calm and laced with faulse concern. “Until you get over this shock you will be placed with a foster care family and return to see me twice a week. So we can talk more.” She smiled and made her way to the interview door.
“What… What about Katalina?” Charlie glared at the phycologist resisting the urge to throw something at her.
“She will be moved to a more… stable home until she is of age or family comes to claim her.” She looked over her shoulder at Charlie. “But you need to get yourself sorted before we move forward with anything.” With those final words the physcologist left the interview room.
“Poor thing…” She whispered to the chief of police, “Only thirteen and having his whole world ripped apart…” Her eyes looked over to the other interview room where Katalina sat quietly fiddling with her hands as she looked nervously around the room. Her small hands clenched tight in her lap as tears still rolled down her cheeks. “At least one of them turned out more or less ok… She’s only nine after all, she might not remember anything in a few years.” She sighed.
