In the world of Castel, trouble was stirring. An evil magician was wreaking havoc on the people of the world; killing them at his leisure, and sparing few. No one could stop him. Eventually he tired of killing those who didn't fight back, and opened a challenge of sorts. Anyone was welcome to come and fight him in a sword dual, a fair one. If the challenger won, he was granted one wish. But if he lost, he was killed. There were no rules on who could enter this challenge, and the only rule on the battle field was to fight fair. Any one who broke this rule suffered a painful death. Years went by, and people kept the challenge going. No one defeated the magician. He grew bored. He had yet to face someone that really gave him any challenge at all, and it was almost as bad as killing random people. So, he used him magic to create himself five very special opponents. These five were special in several ways, depending. One could control fire, and produce fire from nothing but his thoughts. Another could control the wind, and the air. The next could control water as his leisure. The fourth could control earth, making plants obey him and moving rock or dirt, or plant. The fifth was the most special. This one had all the powers of the others put together, and was the most intelligent. The magician himself taught them to fight, and taught them their magic. The five listened, and learned. They remembered. Then, the magician fought them, all of them together. Like he expected, he lost. He granted each of them one wish, knowing what every one would wish for. The first and second all wished for their powers to be passed to a new born child worth of them after they died. The third wished the same for himself, the fourth, and the fifth. The fourth wished they, and those that will come after them, could have a lifespan of at least one thousand years. The fifth one wished, simply, for the death of the magician. All wishes were granted.
And so it was. The five lived until they were a little older than one thousand, and a new group with their power was born after them. They always banned together, for they could not live without one another for long; just like none of their powers would ever be in sync with the world without the others. Together, they discovered the history of the ones before them, and, in their hearts, knew that the evil magician would one day be born again. There was one twist to the ones with the powers: they showed almost no signs of having them until they were sixteen.
