I tapped my pencil on my table. Mrs. Sanders was lecturing us on who knows what, and all I could think about was what was happening this afternoon. My friend Christine called me last week. She had moved away when her dad was transferred at work, but she was coming back. It turns out that her dad decided to take his old job back, because Christine and her mom missed it here.
Anyway, this morning she got back and called me, but since I had to go to school we made plans for later. We were going to the mall to pick out outfits for Damien’s party on Saturday.
“Ms. Roberts, can you please tell me your opinions on the topic?” Mrs. Sanders asked.
“I… uh... I think that Haikus are the most interesting type of poetry.” I answered.
A couple of people sniggered lightly, stopping at Mrs. Sanders glare. “That is very interesting Sky, too bad this is science class.” More people laughed.
My face heated up. “Sorry Mrs. Sanders… I...”
“Pay attention from now on Ms. Roberts or I will have to keep you after class.” My face got even hotter; I knew it must be bright red. I buried my head in my arms and stayed like that until the bell rang.
I jumped up, eager to leave. “Ms. Roberts? A word please?” Sighing I grabbed my books and walked up to Mrs. Sanders desk. “Sky, lately you have been off in la la land, and your grades are beginning to slip. May I suggest you hire a tutor, I know of…”
“Thanks, but I don’t need help.” I said and began to walk away.
“Uh uh uh, actually, it was more of a command than a suggestion. I have emailed your mother and am waiting a reply. I believe that she will agree with my ideas to help your education.”
I sighed. “First off I am not in ‘la la land’ and second, even if my mom agrees to a tutor how are we supposed to pay for it? Do you assume we have that kind of money? That we can just hire a second teacher? For your information…”
“Mrs. Roberts, get out of my classroom.” Mrs. Sanders ordered pointing at the door with one hand and rubbing the bridge of her nose with the other.
Smirking I left the room.
When school finally was over (I had both French and PE after science) I walked home. As I came to the path leading to my front door I dug through my pockets trying to find my key.
“Oh my god!” An extremely high pitched, loud voice squealed. I looked up to see Christine sitting on my front steps waiting for me like an eager puppy. She jumped up and literally flung herself into my arms. We both fell backwards onto the cement.
“Ow, ow, owww!” I whined trying to sit up. She popped up completely unharmed grinning like a fool. How does she do it? Seriously how can someone be so perky all the time?
“Oh my god! I have missed you so much! How have you been? Is Damien really having a party on Saturday? Do you think he’ll mind if I come?” She said all of this very fast. I got up and brushed myself off.
“I missed you too, I’ve been good, until just now. Yes Damien is having a party, and no of course he’d love it if you came.” After being friends with her for so long I’ve learned to accept her hyper ness.
“Are you and Damien still dating?” She asked in an excited whisper.
I blushed; Damien and I had been good friends for almost as long as Christine and I. Then last year he asked me out and not wanting to hurt him I said yes, even though I wasn’t interested. We broke up two months later, a week after Christine left, but we remained good friends. “No.” I answered.
“Oh, want to talk about it?” She asked.
“No, I need an orange juice.” I sighed.
“Oh my god! You still drink orange juice?!” She squealed happily.
“Yeah…” I said giving her a look. Orange juice was like Christine’s and my antidepressant / stress reliever. We drank it all the time.
“Me too!” She screamed.
“Okay you have to stop doing that. Let’s go inside.”
We walked into the over crowded kitchen and sat down at the table. I was about to get up and get some orange juice but my mom walked in and leaned against the fridge. “Oh good you are home from school. I just got back from Christine’s new house. I spent the day helping them unpack. You two are just getting re acquainted then? Well I’m sure you must have spoken on the computer…”
“Actually mom, Christine doesn’t have a computer.” I said annoyed that my mom is keeping me from my orange juice.
“Oh, I see, well I don’t want to interrupt so I’ll just be going. Oh! Christine, Sky hasn’t offered you a drink?”
“Well I was just going to get something but you are leaning against the fridge.”
“Oh, right. Okay, well see you at dinner. Is Christine staying?” She said walking towards the door into the hall.
“We won’t be home we are going to the mall.” I said rolling my eyes to Christine.
“But…” She started.
“Bye mom.” I said shooing her out of the room. I turned around and opened the fridge. “Orange juice for you?” I asked, with my head sill in the fridge.
“What happened?” Christine asked.
“What happened to what?” I asked, still looking for the orange juice.
“What happened to you and your mom? Before I left you guys got along so well. Now you seemed so annoyed with her, she seems almost scared of you, like you are going to blow up any minute.”
I sighed. “Can we not talk about this right now? She just has been on my nerves a lot lately.”
“Ok…” She started
Closing the fridge I walked towards the door. “We are out of orange juice. Let’s go to the mall, we can buy some there.”
“Sounds good, we’ll take my car.”
“Oh my god, are you serious?! That is so funny!” Christine squealed (yet again)
“Yeah, she was trying to be all dramatic and she fell right on her face.” I laughed. We were sitting in the food court in the mall drinking orange juice and eating sushi.
“Hey check him out, he is good looking.” Christine said pointing at a guy standing in line for A&W.
I rolled my eyes, the whole hour and a half we have been here she’s been pointing out potential new boyfriends for her now that she is back in town.
“Don’t you want to wait until you start school again? I mean don’t you want someone you can see all the time? Besides he’s eating A&W!” It wasn’t like I was a health food nut or anything. I was anything but, but I really couldn’t stand greasy burger joints like that.
“Not everyone is super picky like you though! I wouldn’t mind a boyfriend that ate greasy food!” She argued.
“Fine, just you wait. When the two of you are old and married he will have heart attack from all that grease.” She just laughed.
“Come on. We’ve been here how long? We still haven’t found any outfits!” She said and grabbed my arm pulling my along with her.
About ten stores later and a thousand outfits, we both picked out the perfect one for us. I picked a tight black t-shirt with a cute white half shirt to go over top. I also bought a new pair of skinny faded black jeans and some plain black sandals.
Christine picked a strapless white top with a tight black hoodie over top. She bought a short black skirt that I wouldn’t be caught dead in and a pair of those slippery type shoes.
She couldn’t be more different than me with her perfect straight blonde hair and perfect curvy body. I had medium length black hair with loose curls that was dyed bright blue at the bottom. I also had an eyebrow piercing that brought out my green eyes and my belly button too, but not many people knew about that. I barely had a chest but I didn’t mind and besides anyone who commented on it would have to face my wrath. Let’s just say I’ve been in a few fights.
“Can we go home now?” I whined. I was so tired, we had to have been in every store twice over.
“Yeah I guess. Oh my god! That would be absolutely perfect on you!” She said pointing into a store we had definitely been in twice.
“No!” I screamed and dragged her away.
When we finally got back to my house my older brother Jake was sitting on the couch. He had black hair like me, but his was straight and he had a lip piercing on one side. “Hey where have you been?” He asked me.
“Me and Christine were at the mall getting outfits for a party we are going to tomorrow.” I answered he was so over protective.
He nodded at Christine. “Hey long time no see.” She giggled. It was well known she had a thing for Jake. Even he knew, but he wasn’t interested in dating his sister’s best friend.
“So who’s party are you going to?” He asked as Christine and I went and sat on the couch opposite to him.
“Damien’s, not that it is any of your business.” I snapped he needed to learn that I could take care of myself.
“Well you call me if you need any help okay?” He said. “That goes for you to Christine.”
She giggled again. I rolled my eyes. “Okay mom. If you don’t mind we are going to bed now.”
We walked upstairs to my bed room. I got changed while Christine brushed her teeth. When we were both in bed we talked for awhile. You know, just catching up.
Just as we were about to fall asleep Christine whispered “I’m really glad I’ve got my best friend back. I’m never going to move away again.”
“Good.” I whispered back before falling asleep.
AN: Thank –you to any readers I have… I know I have deleted all my other stories but this one is really going to stay up. Please review to give me some motivation. I’ve pretty much know exactly how I want this story to go and sorry for any mistakes, I’m just really excited to get it up and see how you guys react to it.
Another thing I will reply to reviews and sorry this chapter is so short… it’s just getting to know a bit about the characters the story doesn’t really start until about the third chapter. The next chapter is mostly about Damien’s party.
BTW I don’t own A&W or anything
