“Wake up!” A voice demanded
I groaned and rolled onto my back from my previous position on my stomach. “If you don’t wake up this second I’ll dump a whole bucket of water on your head!” That same voice threatened.
Okay, that was it, who dares to threaten my sleeping patterns this early in the morning?! I was about to sit up to tell this person to piss off and let me sleep when, true to their word they dumped a bucket of water on me. I jumped out of bed screaming like a maniac. I danced around from the cold for a second before looking up.
“Well that got her up.” Jake said smirking, a giggly Christine right behind him.
“WHAT THE HELL?!” I screamed at the two of them. “Why did you wake me up at this ungodly hour?” I said beginning to shake.
“Umm… hello, it is almost one…” Christine said trailing off.
“You need to get up. Mom has given us a list of chores and groceries to pick up. She had to leave early for work because of some emergency.” Jake finished for her.
“What kind of emergency could they have?” I said still furious about being awaken. My mom worked for a cleaning company. They cleaned new buildings and things right before they opened.
“I don’t know something about a wall falling or something.” He answered.
I rolled my eyes, “Fine, just get out of my room so I can change.”
“What If I am enjoying your suffering?” He asked. I chucked my wet pillow at his head and pushed them out.
Fifteen minutes later I was out of the shower and dressed. I walked downstairs to see Christine and Jake sitting on the couch watching Lilo and Stitch the movie. I laughed at their stupidity. Neither of them seemed to notice me enter the room, they were too absorbed in the movie. Payback time.
What could I do to them? Hmmm… I looked around the room quietly and my eyes landed on my mom’s old pom poms and megaphone. That’s right, my mom was a cheerleader in high school, pfft. Grabbing the megaphone I slowly creped up behind them. Stopping right between them I put the megaphone to my mouth and screamed as loud as I could.
I got the reaction I wanted; they both jumped and covered their ears. Jake whipped around and made eye contact with me. Uh oh, time to run. I squealed, (much to my dismay) dropped the megaphone and ran upstairs. I could hear Jake’s footsteps and knew he was coming after me.
Shit, shit, shit! What was I going to do? I made a grab for the closet door, but too late. Jake already grabbed me around the waist and carried me into the bathroom. “Put me down!” I screamed kicking and squirming as much as I could.
“Nope, first you have to take a shower.” I replied and released me with one arm to turn on the shower. I screamed.
“I’m in all my clothes!” I could hear the phone ringing in the background. “Phone! You have to get the phone!”
“That’s just too bad for you then don’t you think?” He replied casually, ignoring the phone.
“No!” I shrieked getting desperate. These were my favourite jeans.
“Hey, your mom’s on the phone. She wants to talk to you guys.” Christine said poking her head in the door. She raised an eyebrow when she saw us. “Well, I’ll just be going back downstairs now…” She said and left.
“Nooo! You’ve got to help me!” I screamed after her.
“Well, you are safe for now, but watch your back.” Jake said putting me down and turning off the shower.
We both went downstairs and each picked up one of the phones. He took the one in the kitchen I went into the living room where Lilo and Stitch was still playing. I turned off the TV and picked up the phone. “Hello?” I said still panting slightly.
“Hi Hun, did Jake tell you what you have to do yet?” She asked. She sounded very rushed.
“Yeah” Both me and Jake answered at the same time.
“God, you guys ought to be twins the way you go on. Anyway I want you to finish everything before I get home. I should be back around ten, make yourself dinner.” It was true, even though Jake was eighteen and I was seventeen we were always thinking the same.
“Uh, mom, me and Christine are going to a party tonight at Damien’s. We won’t be home when you get back.” I heard Jake click off
She sighed. “First off it is Christine and I, next I’ve heard nothing of this party and I don’t think it is a good idea for you to go. I’ve heard stories about Damien’s ‘famous’ parties. Don’t they usually end with the police coming?”
I rolled my eyes (I do that a lot) “Mom, I’ve been to lots of Damien’s parties and the police have never come.” I lied.
“Fine, you can go, but be careful, and no drinking, I do not want to deal with a drunken daughter. Oh, and be home by midnight.” She said, I could just imagine her rubbing the bridge of her nose.
“Midnight?! Come on! I’m not thirteen mom!” I whined.
“I don’t have time to argue with you right now…” she started.
“Okay, I’ll be home by two thirty. Bye mom!” I said and hung up.
I walked back into the kitchen. Christine was making toast and eggs and Jake was reading a book at the kitchen table. “Was your mom okay with us going to the party?” Christine asked over her shoulder.
“Yeah.” I said with a grin.
We ate then did the dishes. Jake started to clean the house while Christine and I went grocery shopping with the huge list.
We walked up and down the isles throwing in random cans and boxes into our cart. Finally we got to the juice section. My jaw dropped you should have seen all the orange juice. We bought a few –cough five cough- bottles and headed home.
“I’m stuffed.” Jake whined after dinner.
“You are actually full?” I said laughing.
“Well, yeah. Considering all you guys know how to make is spaghetti, and since you made enough to feed the navy, yeah I’m just a little full.”
Christine and I laughed.
“Well, we cooked you clean.” I said and stood up, clearing my plate.
“Not going to happen.” Jake said. “You are the girls, you clean.”
I could have smacked him. “So just because we are girls we have to do all the cooking and cleaning? What are you going to do big tough guy?”
“First, I cleaned the house while you guys did your girly shopping thing, and now I’m going to watch the football game.” He said and walked out of the room.
“It was damn grocery shopping!” I yelled back.
Christine shook her head at me and started to do the dishes. “Leave those; we have got to get ready.” I said and dragged her away.
Finally, after like two hours of getting ready (Don’t look at me, I only took half an hour) we drove to Damien’s house in our new outfits.
We ended up taking the rest of the spaghetti with us. Seriously, I think we went just a little bit overboard with it. No, we did not have enough to feed the navy, or army for that matter, but we did have way too much for three people.
As we walked up the front steps to Damien’s house we could hear the music pumping inside. “Do you think we should knock?” Christine asked.
“No, there’s no way they could hear us over that music anyway.” I said handing the pot of spaghetti to her and opening the door.
Walking inside I saw Christine smile lightly as she entered. “Wow, this place really brings back memories.” She said looking around. “Did you tell Damien I was back in town?”
“No, I thought this would be a nice surprise for him.” I said. “Oh, here he comes now.”
Damien was walking towards us talking to some guy I didn’t recognize. Shoving the pot into my arms Christine walked towards him. I laughed when he didn’t even notice her and walked right by. She gasped and pretended to hit him on the head from behind.
She walked up behind him and placed her hands over his eyes. I saw her mouth “guess who” but I could barely hear it. Damien turned around and laughed they hugged and walked over towards me.
“Hey, why didn’t you tell me Christine was back?!” He yelled over the music.
“It was a surprise!” I yelled back.
“He placed an arm around Christine’s shoulder and nodded towards the pot in my hands. “What’s that?”
“Spaghetti.” I answered like it was the most casual thing in the world.
“Who brings spaghetti to a party?” He said laughing.
I just laughed and carried it into the kitchen. I placed it on the table, hoping someone would eat it so I didn’t have to take it home. I walked back to the entrance to look for Christine and Damien but they were no where in sight.
I turned around and almost ran right into my friend Nina. “Hey!” I yelled. I didn’t know you were going to be here.”
“Yeah well, I thought I’d come check it out, but it’s just like all the other lame parties I’ve been to.” She said rolling her eyes. She hated parties.
I laughed and walked into the kitchen to get a cooler. I know, I know all my friends made fun of me for drinking a “girly drink” but I really hated beer. I looked for an orange flavored one, but there wasn’t any. Scowling I chose a kiwi one and took a sip.
An hour and three and a half coolers later I finally saw Christine and Damien coming downstairs his arm around her waist. “Hey, where have you guys been?! You like completely ditched me!” I shouted my words slurring. Okay, so I was a light drinker leave me alone.
They just laughed, staring at me. Finally Damien spoke. “I was showing Christine the changes we have made around here.” Referring to Damien’s old bedroom that they had changed into a game room, complete with a pool table.”
“That’s still no reason to ditch me, I could have gotten hurt!” I yelled.
Nina walked up behind me. “Don’t worry I got her.” She said to Christine and Damien.
“I’m not an object you know!” I yelled. “I can take care of myself!”
“Yeah, that’s why you were so mad that we didn’t stick around to make sure you didn’t get hurt.” Christine replied laughing.
I pouted and crossed my arms over my chest just in time to be knocked over by some jock running by.
The next morning I woke up with a splitting head ache. I remember having a few more coolers and even a beer last night before Christine finally had the sense to take me home.
I sat up wearily rubbing my eyes as I did so. Christine was still asleep beside me. Crawling out of bed I headed for the bathroom to find some medicine and brush my teeth; which I’m guessing I skipped brushing last night because they felt gross. I opened my bedroom door only to walk straight into Jake.
I fell on the ground whining. “Get out of my way stupid head.” I whined standing up slowly.
“Mom had a fit last night when you finally came home at three.” He said arms crossed firmly over his chest.
“Three?” I asked scared of the answer I already knew.
“Yup” he answered a slight smirk on his face.
I groaned and walked past him into the bathroom.
After brushing my teeth and taking some medicine I went downstairs and opened the fridge. I took out one of the cartons of orange juice, wrinkling my nose in disgust at the box of fried chicken behind it. I poured myself some juice and took a big gulp. A second later that big gulp was all over the table and floor.
“Why do they have to make toothpaste that goes so horribly with orange juice?” I muttered angrily and grabbed a rag to clean up the mess.
