Chapter One
“Ahh!”
Liz dropped her books as her left shoe heel got stuck in the drain cover. Andie started laughing uncontrollably as she bent down and picked up Liz’s books.
“See! I don’t understand why you insist on wearing heels to school! Women!”
Andie shook her head while lending her shoulder to Liz for support as she plucked her heel out of the drain cover. Liz brushed her long hair out of her face before looking at Andie exasperatedly. Andie never gave up any opportunity to express disbelief the things that “girls like Liz” did and Liz’s penchant for wearing high heels was a favourite point of Andie’s.
“You’re a woman-man! How could you possibly understand?”
Liz struck back jokingly and smacked Andie on the shoulder.
“Let’s go! We’re going to be late for lecture.”
“Yes yes! Wouldn’t want to be late for Prof. Daniel’s lecture, would we?”
Andie laughed as she ran away, chased by Liz.
“Hey Liz! What’s up?”
“Elle! Are you free tonight? Meet up for dinner. Bring Michael?”
Ever since they had gone to different universities, the best friends hadn’t met up very often and both missed the other a lot. Liz was also very anxious for Elle to meet Andie. Andie was her closest friend at her university and she hoped they clicked.
“Sure! 7pm at our usual place? … Ok … Oh sure! … See you both!”
Elle hung up and wondered what Liz’s new friend would be like.
“Argh! I should have known they’d be late! Andie, are you hungry? Do you want to get some food first?”
“It’s okay. Calm down okay? I don’t mind waiting.”
Andie sat quietly at the table, playing her favourite game on her Sony PSP.
“Sir. Would you like to order some drinks?”
A waiter came by the table Liz and Andie were seated at. Hearing what the waiter said, Liz started coughing violently. Andie switched off her Sony PSP and looked up at the waiter.
“No. We’ll order later.”
When the waiter left, Liz burst out laughing. Andie stared at her, dismay written all over her face. She knew she didn’t dress like most girls, but did she really look like a man? It was not the first time such a case of “mistaken identity” had happened and it still brought a bitter feeling to Andie.
Just then, Elle and Michael appeared with Elle apologizing furiously for being late. Liz stood up and hugged her best friend. It really had been too long since they last met.
“Elle, Michael. This is Andie.”
Andie stood up and smiled at Elle and Michael. Michael extended his right hand and shook Andie’s hand. As Elle stepped forward and enveloped Andie in a hug, Liz saw a look of discomfort flash across Andie’s face. She knew Andie wasn’t used to people “touching” her, as she so put it.
As the four sat down at the table, Elle and Liz started chatting animatedly about school life and eye-candy. Meanwhile, Michael spotted Andie’s Sony PSP and struck up a conversation about the Sony PSP versus the Nintendo DS.
Liz looked at the two “men” chatting away happily and smiled to herself. At least Andie wasn’t feeling left out.
Elle looked at Liz’s new friend.
So that’s Andie …
