Out of Control

I made it click,

though the button wouldn't fit at first,

stubbornly stuck inside the remote.

My finger became pale white

from the pressure I placed

on top of the keys.

The television buzzed with

nonsense as

politicians rambled,

violence flashed

the screen blinked

like white lights of an ambulance car,

white yet red and blue and purple,

a radio mix of an album that

doesn't quite sound like the original,

but is.

I made it click,

but then it slipped out of my hands

and fell to the floor,

its black, plastic pieces

broken

on top of the stained ground.

I bent down to pick up

what was left of it,

held the pieces in my shaky hands

and threw them away

as if they never existed,

all the meanwhile thinking

"I should have left it alone.”
