The sands are so heavy now that the heat even seams to run away from it and the sky is slowly filling with smoke and gases that water up the eyes and fill the lungs with poison and death. The sounds of screaming men and gun fire were over heard, Captains and Lieutenant trying to get the orders out to all the men to pull back but nothing seems to be working to their plans, the men are frozen in the moment and wish to fight on and on.
I was the unlucky one. They told me as long as I fallowed my orders and remembered my training I would survive this battle, looks like someone lied to me. They called me Hybrid, I really have no idea why they called me that but it worked in my favour really, it was better then my real name.
This morning we where told to get our gear and move out of camp, we had our first mission and it was just a swipe of a closed off old factory in the middle of God knows where. It was one mile out of the main target area. Command tells us The Red Zone was cleared of all enemy tangos, and that the 3rd Armour Division did the job last week and cleared the sector and found little to no resistance. Now we had to clear houses and factories and try and find some bombs and hidden weapons and we had to hold and wait for another counter attack.
The Red Zone was the main encampment for the enemy it was their weapons facility as well as were the leaders made their plans, we where hoping to catch some in The Red Zone but we had to fight to them first. For two months we slowly pushed them out of the Red Zone and got most of our men killed as we did so, the buildings around The Red Zone had too many hiding places and we got a lot of RPG fire and a lot of turret placement that got a lot of our retreat roots cut off. We had no choice but to keep going.
After some hopeless firefights our choppers finally made it, they fired a lot of Bunker Busters and took care of the enemy with the RPG’s and saved most of us from going back home in a body bag.
After all the fighting and clearing of The Red Zone we had orders to go back in and swipe up again, it was to be the last time we go in before finally putting a base up and get our radio’s working in the tall buildings. They told us we had no worries and there would be no resistance.
‘‘Hybrid.’’ Reaper yelled and waved me over.
‘‘Yes sir.’’ I saluted him when I arrived.
‘‘Take 3rd squad and go around to the factory, you still have a mission to finish soldier.’’ Reaper was our commanding officer and he was a good man, he was in the army before I was even born and he seen more shit then any one else in any platoon or squad. He had a round and chubby face, he had darks eyes and a big nose. He was a funny looking guy but he was deadly with that rifle of his.
I told my commanding officer, Skink, that we had our orders to move out. He told us to get our shit together and be at Jeeps in five minutes.
The Red Zone was a hell wrapped in shit, it really was, the smell was terrible. Most of the buildings were not even standing anymore because of the Bunker Buster, you just have to love the destruction. We were three clicks east of the clearing and we had the factory in view. A shooting sound, like rushing air came out from the building on our backs.
‘‘RPG! Get down and return fire. NOW!’’ Skink ordered everyone out of the Jeeps and to find some cover, but there was no cover, they had us right where they wanted us. I was hit, just right below the left chest and the bullet entered my lung, I could feel the blood flow down my chest, it was hot and I didn’t really fell the bullet enter my chest just the force and the shook that I got hit. I feel on my back and watch everyone else in my squad run for cover and another RPG round hit a Jeep and send the thing flying. I’m dying, I know I am.
The place was a trap, it always was, they knew we where coming and they knew they would have an easy kill, after all this is The Red Zone and no one really makes it out alive. I whispered something that sounded like a name, maybe a name to someone that really cared about me but I don’t remember what I said because everything just went black.
