your voice still in my head

(your phonecall woke me up)

I replayed the conversation

halfway toward a dream

(a wish and a star and a nightmare)

you told me she’d taken it from you

(or was that a part of the dream?)

you told me she took it away

I thought, did she draw you

away from yourself and into her?

did she love you

was her hand reaching out

was she strong enough to keep you?

I may ask you in the night

when you touch me in a dream

with another man’s face

(like a hand reaching out)

was her hand strong?

I may ask you when I see you

with another man’s hands

(shiver me away with them)

but that was another dream

another place another state

(same mental state though)

he still has it

she took yours away

and I offered you mine

Awake what was that?

that was the nightmare

no you can’t have it

and went back to sleep
