Such a beautiful day today

So we’ll walk out into the rain

Pink umbrellas - big coneflower

Clear plastic raincoats – simple cellophane

Rubber yellow boots – plastic ducklings

The puddles are like mirrors

The rainbow is high above us

The droplets aren’t water – pure sanctum

The pavement below is slick

The river to the southwest will swell

If only others would come out

Just to dance in the rain

Perhaps their frowns would lighten a little

But instead they stare at us

From behind window and curtain

The wind will whip at our faces

The clouds are a puffy, sulky grey

But they’re only singing to us

The wind whispers, the flutes

The thunder above is the cymbals

They don’t know what their missing

They think they’re remaining safe

But within the sheltered life there’s misery

And the naivety to the joys risks pose

Minds so narrow and so are the horizons

If only others would come out

Just to dance in the rain

Perhaps their frowns would lighten a little

But instead they stare at us

From behind window and curtain

Let them watch in envy, do what they never dared

Twirl among the rain drops

Kiss me in the puddles

Tickle fight in the dewed grass blades

And smile knowing what happiness is
